Y-doped barium cerate-zirconate ceramic oxide is proven to be a competent material as an electrolyte with high proton conductivity as well as chemical and mechanical stabilities in carbon dioxide and water vapour atmospheres. This ceramic oxide requires high processing temperature which will results in the increase of particle/grain size. Hence, modification on the synthesis route has been studied in reducing the particle/grain size of the ceramic by lowering the calcination temperature. In this work, BaCe0.54Zr0.36Y0.1O2.95 (BCZY) powder was synthesized with addition of surfactant (Brij-97) through an established modified sol-gel route. Single BCZY perovskite phase was successfully obtained at calcination temperature of 950°C which was lower than our previous study (T=1100°C). The prepared sample was made into pellet by a dry pressing technique with diameter, d=13 mm and thickness, t~2 mm and then subjected to a two-step sintering method prior to morphological and electrical measurements. Impedance measurement was carried out at intermediate temperatures (500-800°C) using an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in wet nitrogen atmosphere. Impedance spectrum was analysed to obtain the behaviour of grain core and grain boundary responses by a fitting procedure using a brick-layer model. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis of fractured pellet revealed that BCZY prepared with the assisted of Brij-97 exhibited dense, homogenous and less agglomerate grain with grain size around 88 nm, which may explain the enhancement in the total conductivity of the BCZY electrolyte.

The present study evaluates the in vitro release of diclofenac sodium (DFNa) from contact lenses based on poly-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (pHEMA) hydrogels containing an embedded microemulsion to extend release duration. The oil (ethyl butyrate)-in-water microemulsion systems are prepared with two non-ionic surfactants, Brij 97 or Tween 80, together with a long-alkyl chain cationic surfactant, cetalkonium chloride (CKC). Without CKC, Brij 97 or Tween 80-based microemulsions showed average droplet sizes of 12 nm and 18 nm, respectively. The addition of CKC decreased the average droplet sizes to 2–5 nm for both non-ionic surfactants. Such significant reduction in the average droplet size corresponds to an increase in the DFNa release duration as revealed by the in vitro experiments. Contact lens characterization showed that important properties such as optical transparency and water content of Brij 97-based contact lenses with cationic microemulsions was excellent. However, the optical transparency of the corresponding Tween 80 based contact lenses was unsatisfactory. The results indicate that cationic microemulsion-laden contact lenses can benefit from combinatory effects of microemulsions and cationic surfactant at low CKC weight percentage, e.g., with the release of 70% of the drug in 45, 10, and 7 h for B97-CKC-0.45%, CKC-0.45%, and control lenses, respectively. However, the microemulsion effect on extending DFNa release became negligible at the highest CKC weight percentage (1.8%).

Colloidal dispersions of Ag-Pt composite nanoparticles were prepared by gamma radiolysis technique in the presence of nonionic surfactant Brij'97. Simultaneous as well as sequential reduction methods were employed in order to study the structural formation of Ag-Pt bimetallic clusters. Similar shape and trend was observed in optical spectra for both methods. Radiolysis yielded nearly spherical Ag-Pt bimetallic clusters by use of AgNO3 instead of AgClO4. The disappearance of the silver resonance and the simultaneous growth of the 260 nm resonance are independent of cluster structure and degree of alloying. To understand formation of Ag-Pt aggregate, the optical studies were also done as a function of amount of dose absorbed, concentration of surfactant, that is, Brij'97. The shape of the absorption spectrum did not change with increase in gamma radiation dose. TEM analysis exhibited fine dispersions of Ag-Pt clusters surrounded by a mantle when capped with Brij'97. The particle size obtained was in the range of 5–9 nm. On the basis of optical, XRD, and TEM analysis, alloy formation is discussed.
