Craniofacial morphometric analysis as a differentiation tool in mystax group of Saguinus Hoffmannsegg, 1807 (Cebidae, Callitrichinae): a preliminary test

This study provides a quantitative assessment of the craniofacial variation among recognized species and subspecies in the Saguinus mystax species group and tests the reliability of the proposed method in detecting differences among taxa. Thirty measurements were taken of 66 tamarin specimens. We used non-parametric MANOVA to test for differentiation among species and among subspecies. Interspecific analyses showed significant variation among species, except for S. inustus. We detected significant differentiation between S. mystax mystax and S. m. pileatus, whereas no significant morphometric difference was found between S. imperator subspecies. Measurements presenting some differentiation among species were selected for subsequent analysis of variance. Univariate analyses detected significant differences among species only for three measurements. Our results suggest that the cranial morphometric variation has limited information to discriminate among the taxa in the S. mystax group. However, we cannot disregard the lack of statistical power due to small sampling in some taxa, absence of some subspecies in the analyses, or even lack of informativeness of the chosen measurements. Morphometric analyses was insufficient to demonstrate complete differentiation in Saguinus. The use of morphometric analyses should not be considered as a definitive method for taxa differentiation and delimitation in Saguinus.

Do wild tamarins reconcile? Two case reports from moustached tamarins

Mechanisms of conflict resolution, e.g. reconciliation, have been reported from a number of group-living animals, particularly primates. However, whether or not conflict resolution occurs in the cooperatively breeding callitrichids (marmosets and tamarins) remains a matter of debate. Captive studies provide contrasting evidence for the occurrence of reconciliation, and no evidence has been previously available for wild groups. Here, I present data on post-conflict behaviour in wild moustached tamarins, Saguinus mystax, which suggest that reconciliation occurs among wild callitrichids, too. However, reconciliation seems to occur very rarely among these primates, probably due to the generally peaceful nature of their social relations.

ESTADO DE LAS POBLACIONES DE MAMÍFEROS EN LA RESERVA NACIONAL MATSÉS, AL NORESTE DE LA AMAZONÍA PERUANA

Este estudio se realizó entre junio a octubre del 2015, en la Reserva Nacional Matsés, con el objetivo de conocer el estado de las poblaciones de mamíferos de caza en tres sectores de muestreo: Alemán, Loboyacu y Alto Gálvez. Los datos fueron colectados en cuatro transectos lineales, cada uno tuvo 5 km de longitud. En los tres sectores de muestreo, los primates tuvieron las mayores densidades poblacionales. En el sector Alto 2 Gálvez, las especies con mayor densidad fueron Saimiri macrodon (26.75 ind/km ) y Sapajus macrocephalus 2 (18.93 ind/km ); mientras que en los sectores Alemán y Loboyacu, fue Lagothrix lagotricha (23.54 y 13.84 2 2 ind/km , respectivamente) y Saguinus mystax (20.58 y 17.87 ind/km , respectivamente). En general, la variabilidad de mamíferos de caza puede ser explicado al 67.52%. Las comunidades de mamíferos de los sectores Alemán y Loboyacu fueron similares, en donde la caza fue frecuente. La comparación independiente de ambos sectores versus el sector del Alto Gálvez, mostró que el último sector tuvo mayor densidades poblacional. Es decir, la cuenca alta del río Gálvez mantiene las poblaciones más saludables de mamíferos.

Morphological and genetic diversity in Callithrix hybrids in an anthropogenic area in southeastern Brazil (Primates: Cebidae: Callitrichinae)

Two species of Callithrix, C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812), are considered invasive in Rio de Janeiro. This study determined the genetic and morphological diversity and verified the species involved in the hybridization of 10 individuals from the municipalities of Silva Jardim (N = 9) and Rio das Ostras (N = 1). We compared the external morphology and skull of C. jacchus (N = 15) and C. penicillata (N = 14) specimens deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro (MN- UFRJ). Phylogenetic (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) and phylogeographical analyses (network analysis) were performed based on cytochrome b sequences. These analyses included hybrids from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (N = 3), C. penicillata (N = 2), C. jacchus (N = 2), C. geoffroyi (N = 2), C. kuhlii (N = 2), C. aurita (N = 1), and as outgroups, Mico emiliae (N = 1) and Saguinus mystax (N = 1). The pelage and skull characters of most hybrids were more closely related to C. jacchus. Skull morphometric analysis revealed an intermediate state for the hybrids. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a high similarity between the hybrids and C. penicillata. Six haplotypes of hybrids were identified. Network analysis including them and C. penicillata recovered the topology generated by phylogenetic analysis. The results corroborate that C. jacchus and C. penicillata participate in the hybridization process. There was no geographic structure between hybrids from the coastal lowlands and from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.

Abundancia de primates y de otros animales de caza con énfasis en Saguinus mystax y Saguinus labiatus en Padre Isla e Isla Muyuy, Loreto, Perú

En la Amazonía peruana, las islas son áreas potenciales para el manejo y conservación de la fauna silvestre, al menos así lo demuestran los resultados obtenidos en primates. Este estudio tuvo como finalidad actualizar la información existente sobre la densidad poblacional y el estado actual de <em>Saguinus labiatus</em> y de <em>Saguinus</em> <em>mystax</em> introducidas en la Isla Muyuy y Padre Isla con fines de manejo. También hemos evaluado otros componentes de la fauna silvestre sujetos a la caza con fines de subsistencia, cuyos resultados permitirán la formulación de planes de manejo y el uso sostenible con participación comunitaria. Con este propósito hemos conducido censos por transecto entre enero y marzo del 2012 en la Isla Muyuy y enero, setiembre y octubre del 2012 en Padre Isla. Los resultados indican la existencia de 386 individuos de <em>S. labiatus</em> agrupados en 35 grupos sociales en la Isla Muyuy y de 583 individuos de <em>S. mystax</em> agrupados en 45 grupos en Padre Isla. Ambas especies fueron encontradas conviviendo con Saguinus nigrifrons en igual número de grupos sociales. La densidad poblacional para <em>S. labiatus</em> fue estimada en 16,5 individuos/km² y para <em>S. mystax</em> en 71,3 individuos/km². En <em>S. mystax</em>, el crecimiento promedio anual de la población fue 3,3%. Entre los otros componentes evaluados, se resalta la presencia de <em>Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris</em> con 9,0 individuos/km² equivalente a 271,8 kg de biomasa entre ambas islas.
