AbstractThe theory of graph limits is only understood to a somewhat satisfactory degree in the cases of dense graphs and of bounded degree graphs. There is, however, a lot of interest in the intermediate cases. It appears that one of the most important constituents of graph limits in the general case will be Markov spaces (Markov chains on measurable spaces with a stationary distribution). This motivates our goal to extend some important theorems from finite graphs to Markov spaces or, more generally, to measurable spaces. In this paper, we show that much of flow theory, one of the most important areas in graph theory, can be extended to measurable spaces. Surprisingly, even the Markov space structure is not fully needed to get these results: all we need a standard Borel space with a measure on its square (generalizing the finite node set and the counting measure on the edge set). Our results may be considered as extensions of flow theory for directed graphs to the measurable case.

Abstract We show that there is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number three that admits a Borel homomorphism to every analytic graph on a standard Borel space of Borel chromatic number at least three. Moreover, we characterize the Borel graphs on standard Borel spaces of vertex-degree at most two with this property and show that the analogous result for digraphs fails.

We show that if \(S\), \(T\) are two commuting automorphisms of a standard Borel space such that they generate a free Borel \(\mathbb{Z}^2\)-action then \(S\) and \(T\) do not have same sets of real valued bounded coboundaries. We also prove a weaker form of Rokhlin Lemma for Borel \(\mathbb{Z}^d\)-actions.

Let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ be a finitely generated group acting by probability measure-preserving maps on the standard Borel space $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$. We show that if $H\leq \unicode[STIX]{x1D6E4}$ is a subgroup with relative spectral radius greater than the global spectral radius of the action, then $H$ acts with finitely many ergodic components and spectral gap on $(X,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$. This answers a question of Shalom who proved this for normal subgroups.

We generalize Brooks’ theorem to show that if $G$ is a Borel graph on a standard Borel space $X$ of degree bounded by $d\geqslant 3$ which contains no $(d+1)$-cliques, then $G$ admits a ${\it\mu}$-measurable $d$-coloring with respect to any Borel probability measure ${\it\mu}$ on $X$, and a Baire measurable $d$-coloring with respect to any compatible Polish topology on $X$. The proof of this theorem uses a new technique for constructing one-ended spanning subforests of Borel graphs, as well as ideas from the study of list colorings. We apply the theorem to graphs arising from group actions to obtain factor of IID $d$-colorings of Cayley graphs of degree $d$, except in two exceptional cases.

AbstractWe study separable metric spaces with few types of countable dense sets. We present a structure theorem for locally compact spaces having precisely n types of countable dense sets: such a space contains a subset S of size at most n−1 such that S is invariant under all homeomorphisms of X and X ∖ S is countable dense homogeneous. We prove that every Borel space having fewer than c types of countable dense sets is Polish. The natural question of whether every Polish space has either countably many or c many types of countable dense sets is shown to be closely related to Topological Vaught's Conjecture.

AbstractWe prove that the set of all Polish groups admitting a compatible complete left-invariant metric (called CLI) is coanalytic non-Borel as a subset of a standard Borel space of all Polish groups. As an application of this result, we show that there does not exist a weakly universal CLI group. This, in particular, answers in the negative a question of H.Becker.
