AbstractLet X be a CR manifold with transversal, proper CR action of a Lie group G. We show that the quotient X/G is a complex space such that the quotient map is a CR map. Moreover the quotient is universal, i.e. every invariant CR map into a complex manifold factorizes uniquely over a holomorphic map on X/G. We then use this result and complex geometry to prove an embedding theorem for (non-compact) strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with transversal $$G \rtimes S^1$$ G ⋊ S 1 -action. The methods of the proof are applied to obtain a projective embedding theorem for compact CR manifolds.

Abstract We present two algorithms determining all the complete and simplicial fans admitting a fixed non-degenerate set of vectors V as generators of their 1-skeleton. The interplay of the two algorithms allows us to discerning if the associated toric varieties admit a projective embedding, in principle for any values of dimension and Picard number. The first algorithm is slower than the second one, but it computes all complete and simplicial fans supported by V and lead us to formulate a topological-combinatoric conjecture about the definition of a fan. On the other hand, we adapt the Sturmfels’ arguments on the Gröbner fan of toric ideals to our complete case; we give a characterization of the Gröbner region and show an explicit correspondence between Gröbner cones and chambers of the secondary fan. A homogenization procedure of the toric ideal associated to V allows us to employing GFAN and related software in producing our second algorithm. The latter turns out to be much faster than the former, although it can compute only the projective fans supported by V. We provide examples and a list of open problems. In particular we give examples of rationally parametrized families of $$\mathbb {Q}$$ Q -factorial complete toric varieties behaving in opposite way with respect to the dimensional jump of the nef cone over a special fibre.

Abstract We classify all homogeneous pseudo-embeddings of the point-line geometry defined by the points and k-dimensional subspaces of PG(n, 2), and use this to study the local structure of homogeneous full projective embeddings of the dual polar space DW(2n − 1, 2). Our investigation allows us to distinguish n possible types for such homogeneous embeddings. For each of these n types, we construct a homogeneous full projective embedding of DW(2n − 1, 2).

AbstractWe consider the natural$A_{\infty }$-structure on the$\mathrm{Ext}$-algebra$\mathrm{Ext}^*(G,G)$associated with the coherent sheaf$G=\mathcal{O}_C\oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_1}\oplus \cdots \oplus \mathcal{O}_{p_n}$on a smooth projective curve$C$, where$p_1,\ldots,p_n\in C$are distinct points. We study the homotopy class of the product$m_3$. Assuming that$h^0(p_1+\cdots +p_n)=1$, we prove that$m_3$is homotopic to zero if and only if$C$is hyperelliptic and the points$p_i$are Weierstrass points. In the latter case we show that$m_4$is not homotopic to zero, provided the genus of$C$is greater than$1$. In the case$n=g$we prove that the$A_{\infty }$-structure is determined uniquely (up to homotopy) by the products$m_i$with$i\le 6$. Also, in this case we study the rational map$\mathcal{M}_{g,g}\to \mathbb{A}^{g^2-2g}$associated with the homotopy class of$m_3$. We prove that for$g\ge 6$it is birational onto its image, while for$g\le 5$it is dominant. We also give an interpretation of this map in terms of tangents to$C$in the canonical embedding and in the projective embedding given by the linear series$|2(p_1+\cdots +p_g)|$.

AbstractWe prove that under any projective embedding of an abelian variety A of dimension g, a complete set of addition laws has cardinality at least g+1, generalizing a result of Bosma and Lenstra for the Weierstrass model of an elliptic curve in ℙ2. In contrast, we prove, moreover, that if k is any field with infinite absolute Galois group, then there exists for every abelian variety A/k a projective embedding and an addition law defined for every pair of k-rational points. For an abelian variety of dimension 1 or 2, we show that this embedding can be the classical Weierstrass model or the embedding in ℙ15, respectively, up to a finite number of counterexamples for ∣k∣≤5 .

The loop space Lℙ1 of the Riemann sphere consisting of all Ck or Sobolev Wk, p maps S1 → ℙ1 is an infinite dimensional complex manifold. We compute the Picard group pic(Lℙ1) of holomorphic line bundles on Lℙ1 as an infinite dimensional complex Lie group with Lie algebra the Dolbeault group H0, 1(Lℙ1). The group G of Möbius transformations and its loop group LG act on Lℙ1. We prove that an element of pic(Lℙ1) is LG-fixed if it is G-fixed, thus completely answering the question of Millson and Zombro about the G-equivariant projective embedding of Lℙ1.

We study pullbacks of modular forms of weight 1 from the modular curve X(4) to the modular curve X(4p), where p is an odd prime. We find the extent to which such modular forms separate points on X(4p). Our main result is that these modular forms give rise to a morphism F from the quotient of X(4p) by a certain involution ι to projective space, such that F is a projective embedding of X(4p)/ι away from the cusps. We also report on computer calculations regarding products of such modular forms, going up to weight 4 for p ≤ 13, and up to weight 3 for p ≤ 23, and make a conjecture about these products and the nature of the singularities at the cusps of the image F(X(4p)/ι).

Let $\Delta$ be a symplectic dual polar space $DW(2n-1,{\Bbb K})$ or a Hermitian dual polar space $DH(2n-1,{\Bbb K},\theta)$, $n \geq 2$. We define a class of hyperplanes of $\Delta$ arising from its Grassmann-embedding and discuss several properties of these hyperplanes. The construction of these hyperplanes allows us to prove that there exists an ovoid of the Hermitian dual polar space $DH(2n-1,{\Bbb K},\theta)$ arising from its Grassmann-embedding if and only if there exists an empty $\theta$-Hermitian variety in ${\rm PG}(n-1,{\Bbb K})$. Using this result we are able to give the first examples of ovoids in thick dual polar spaces of rank at least 3 which arise from some projective embedding. These are also the first examples of ovoids in thick dual polar spaces of rank at least 3 for which the construction does not make use of transfinite recursion.
