Trithioarsenites [(RS)3As], dithioarsonites [R-As(SR′)2] and thioarsinites [R2As-SR′]: Preparations, chemical, biochemical and biological properties

Contrary to P(V) compounds, As(V) compounds can very easily reduced by thiols to As(III) thiolates that are deemed to play a central role in the metabolism of arsenic and therefore a review on the preparation and properties of the title thiolates can be of interest. The preparation of trithioarsenites, dithioarsonites and thioarsinites involves reactions of a thiol with a proper As(V) or As(III) precursor via 4-centered transition states or a thiolate by SN2 mechanisms. Convenient precursors are the solids As2O3, arsonic and arsinic acids, although for the latter two acids the separation of the product from the co-produced disulfides can be problematic. Only a few crystal structures have been reported and involve only trithioarsenites. From their chemical properties, the hydrolyses, transthiolations and air oxidations are of particular interest from mechanistic and biochemical/biological points of view. Their nucleophilicity towards alkyl halides and acyl derivatives revealed unexpected behavior. Although these molecules have many free electron pairs only three reports were found pertaining to their reaction with metal cations (Hg2+) and metal carbonyls; the mercuric complexes being not characterized. Only a few studies appeared for the action of the title compounds towards enzymes, while the patent literature revealed that they have bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal activities for agricultural applications, some have antiparasitic activity on animals and a few are carcinostatic.

High Density Polyethylenes Bearing Isolated In-Chain Carbonyls

Polyethylene materials are highly important polymers which are produced in the largest volume among all plastics. Due to the chemical inert property of saturated carbon-carbon bonds, the degradation of polyethylene is extremely challenging, which prevents them from efficient chemical recycling. Installing functional groups in the main chain of polyethylenes may facilitate the degradation and following chemical recycling of polyethylene materials. Here we report a highly selective approach for the synthesis of high-density polyethylenes bearing isolated in-chain carbonyls. Linear high-molecular weight polyethylene chains are synthesized via the palladium catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene with metal carbonyls. Different from traditional ethylene/CO copolymerization reactions, excellent non-alternating selectivity has been achieved. While the properties of polyethylene have been retained in the copolymer, faster degradation compared with that of polyethylene was observed upon UV light irradiation. The synthesized materials may therefore serve as more environmentally friendly alternative plastics than traditional polyethylene materials.

Geometrically encoded SERS nanobarcodes for the logical detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma-related progression biomarkers

The limited availability of nasopharyngeal carcinoma-related progression biomarker array kits that offer physicians comprehensive information is disadvantageous for monitoring cancer progression. To develop a biomarker array kit, systematic identification and differentiation of a large number of distinct molecular surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) reporters with high spectral temporal resolution is a major challenge. To address this unmet need, we use the chemistry of metal carbonyls to construct a series of unique SERS reporters with the potential to provide logical and highly multiplex information during testing. In this study, we report that geometric control over metal carbonyls on nanotags can produce 14 distinct barcodes that can be decoded unambiguously using commercial Raman spectroscopy. These metal carbonyl nanobarcodes are tested on human blood samples and show strong sensitivity (0.07 ng/mL limit of detection, average CV of 6.1% and >92% degree of recovery) and multiplexing capabilities for MMPs.
