Perceptions about Teaching in Times of COVID-19 Pandemic: Experience of Secondary Education in Chile

<p style="text-align: justify;">The following article is a qualitative study that analyses the perception of parents and high school students regarding teaching in times of Coronavirus disease COVID-19, with the idea of recognizing the facilitators and barriers for the teaching-learning process in the pandemic. The above, in the understanding that due to the sudden appearance of SARS-CoV-2, educational systems around the world had to adapt to virtual teaching, as a result of the confinement to which the population has been subjected during the year 2020 and a good part of the year 2021. The research is based on the interpretative-comprehensive paradigm, with a qualitative methodology, which considered the realization of four focus groups with students and four focus groups with secondary school parents, from two public high schools located in the province of Talca, Maule region, Chile. The findings of the study are related to the adverse effects of the pandemic on student learning, as a result of connectivity difficulties, and the emotional impact on the quality of life of young people and their families. On the other hand, learning at home is related to limited pedagogical strategies and evaluative aspects that do not allow verifying the real learning of the students.</p>

What could we do differently next time? Australian parents’ experiences of the short-term and long-term impacts of home schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic

Background COVID-19 lockdowns have resulted in school closures worldwide, requiring curriculum to be delivered to children remotely (home schooling). Qualitative evidence is needed to provide important context to the positive and negative impacts of home schooling and inform strategies to support caregivers and children as the pandemic continues. This study aimed to explore the experiences of home schooling caregivers at multiple time-points during the pandemic. Methods Data were obtained from a longitudinal survey of a representative Australian sample conducted over 8 waves during 2020 and 2021. Participants who had home schooled at least one child during COVID-19 completed open-ended questions at Wave 4 (May 2020; n = 176), Wave 7 (June 2020; n = 145), and Wave 8 (March 2021; n = 57). Participants were asked to describe what they found positive and challenging about home schooling (Wave 4), what they would do differently if they home schooled their children again (Wave 7), and the longer-term impacts of home schooling on caregivers and children (Wave 8). Results 91% of participants at Wave 4 reported at least one positive and/or negative aspect of home schooling. At Wave 8, 32% and 29% of participants reported no long-term positive or negative impacts of home schooling respectively. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, six themes were developed from the data, encompassing the impacts of home schooling on parents, and the perceived impacts on children. Impacts on parents included connecting with children, managing the work-life-school balance, and the challenge of home schooling when parents are not teachers. Perceived impacts on children included: quieter and safer learning at home, and the negatives of managing schoolwork load and social isolation. At Wave 7, 56 participants (44%) identified at least one thing they would do differently. Conclusions Despite some participants reporting positive experiences associated with home schooling, it remains challenging for many parents and their children. Supports for parents and children engaged in home schooling should provide clear and flexible guidance on how to balance schoolwork with other competing demands, assist parents who lack confidence in supporting their children’s remote learning, and address risks associated with social isolation.

PENGEMBANGAN MEDIA E-BOOK AUDIO VISUAL MENGGUNAKAN FLIPBOOK MATERI TRIGONOMETRI KELAS XI IPA BERBASIS HYBRID LEARNING

The COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the world since 2019 has resulted in the world of education in Indonesia, which was initially required to conduct online or online learning at home. Until now, the number of Covid cases in Indonesia has decreased. Finally, the education office has implemented a hybrid learning system or offline and online learning. . Solutions for hybrid learning through several applications such as Whatsapp groups, Zoom, Google classroom, Google meet, Quipper and so on. With this application, teachers are required to be creative in delivering hybrid learning, therefore in addition to using this application, researchers use flipbooks to support hybrid learning. The method in this study using ADDIE namely Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. The purpose of this study is to provide meaningful and fun learning and not boring without giving assignments that are too heavy so that it makes students uncomfortable because there are many assignments and too much material is delivered in a monotonous way. The results from the validation of the expert team were obtained at 86.5%, which means that the e-book is very suitable to be used and received a positive response with a percentage value of 89.5% resulting in a positive response. The conclusion that can be narrowed is that e-learning online learning using Flipbook with trigonometry material for class XI Science is declared effective because students can understand trigonometry material even though the learning is done in a hybrid way. ABSTRAKPandemi covid-19 yang melanda dunia sejak tahun 2019 mengakibatkan dunia pendidikan di Indonesia yang awalnya diharuskan melakukan pembelajaran secara daring atau dalam jaringan yang dilakukan dirumah hingga saat ini kasus covid di Indonesia semakin menaurun akhirnya dinas pendidikan memberlakukan sistem pembelajaran secara hybrid atau pembelajaran luring dan daring. Solusi untuk pembelajaran hybrid melalui beberapa aplikasi seperti Whatsapp grup, Zoom, Google classroom, Google meet, Quipper dan lain sebagainya. Dengan aplikasi tersebut guru dituntut kreatif dalam menyampaikan pembelajaran secara hybrid, oleh karena itu selain menggunakan aplikasi tersebut peneliti menggunakan flipbook untuk penunjang pembelajaran hybrid. Metode pada penelitian ini menggunakan ADDIE yaitu Analisis, Design, Development, Implementasi dan Evaluasi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk memberikan pembelajaran bermakna serta menyenangkan dan tidak membosankan tanpa memberikan tugas yang terlalu berat sehingga membuat peserta didik tidak nyaman karena banyak tugas dan terlalu banyak materi yang disampaikan dengan cara monoton. Hasil dari validasi tim ahli didapat sebesar 86,5% dengan artian e-book sangat layak digunakan dan mendapat respon positif dengan nilai presentase 89,5% menghasilkan respon positif. Kesimpulan yang dapat dikerucutkan adalah pembelajaran daring secara e-learning menggunakan Flipbook dengan materi trigonometri kelas XI IPA dinyatakan efektif karena peserta didik dapat paham materi trigonometri meskipun pembelajaran dilakukan secara hybrid

Improving Early Childhood Development Outcomes in Times of COVID-19: Experimental Evidence on Parental Networks and SMS Messages

This paper presents novel evidence of an intervention to foster preschool students cognitive skills during COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a policy experiment that provided preschool student parents with a SMS text message program to support student learning at home. Taking advantage of existing parent networks, we study the direct effect of being selected to receive the SMS text messages, and the spillovers of being part of a parent network. We show that after 15 weeks of intervention, SMS text messages increase student cognitive skills by 0.11 to 0.12 standard deviations. The effect is driven by an increase of parental involvement through the proposed activities. We find no evidence that information is transferred within parent networks.

Optimizing the Cooperation Between Teacher and Parents in the Implementation of Studying From Home for Early Childhood

Early childhood education is being conducted at home in the event of a Covid-19 pandemic. Parents in the WhatsApp Group receive teaching materials from the teacher via this method of instruction. As a result, teachers and parents must work together to ensure that children at home are still receiving an education that is tailored to their individual needs. This study used a qualitative approach based on interviews with teachers and parents from five Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Kindergartens located in Pekanbaru City. In the study, teachers and parents found that a positive attitude in communication patterns between them. They can lead to good patterns of cooperation, with parents being able to guide and motivate their children while implementing learning at home and being directly involved in learning with children by accompanying their children while studying.

ANALISIS PERSEPSI GURU SAAT PEMBELAJARAN DARING DI MASA PPKM (PEMBERLAKUAN PEMBATASAN KEGIATAN MASYARAKAT)

Learning activity during public activity restrictions at Muhammadiyah Elementary School, Taman Sub-district, Sidoarjo Regency, is carried out through online learning; however, teachers at SD Muhammadiyah Taman continue to face a number of challenges in this teaching and learning activity. This research aims to examine online learning implementation during the public activity restrictions. There are still many teachers who lack an understanding of science and technology, let alone old or traditional teachers who make online learning uninteresting. This research applied the survey research method. Data were collected using an open questionnaire accessible via Google Forms. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. There were 97 teachers at SD Muhammadiyah Taman who filled out the questionnaire. Based on the questionnaire responses, 70.1% had implemented online learning. The issue during online learning was that many students did not have their own mobile phones or laptops because their siblings were still using them for online learning or their parents were still using them for work, so teachers felt that the material presented could not be fully absorbed by the students. Meanwhile, parents struggled with not being able to control their children when learning at home, which differed from face-to-face learning at school

STRESSORS AND PARENTAL COGNIZANCE ON MODULAR LEARNING MODALITY

The factors are contributing to optimal parental educational involvement always intrigued to research, and the researcher wanted to dig into the issue or the problem behind the different scenarios. A wide range of stressors and parental cognizance on modular learning modality, including the home environment, socio-economic status of the family, and learning at home with a descriptive equivalent of very extensive, indicates that stressors on modular learning modality are always evident. On the other hand, the extent of parental cognizance, considered with the indicators: participation in social organizations, school programs involvement, and community collaboration with a descriptive equivalent of extensive which frequently means evident. A student’s ability to succeed academically as well as cultivate a lifetime passion for learning is greatly enhanced when parents are actively involved in the lives of their kids. Furthermore, the results of this study awaken to Department of Education to maintain seminars about improving parental cognizance and training about the different modalities for the parents to develop their supporting teaching skills and deeper relationships with their children. The Online Learning Transition: Challenges and Opportunities

Corona Virus Disease 2019 is currently still volatile. Large-scale restrictions stop activities outside the home that have a broad impact on life, including the field of education. Learning activities transition into online learning at home. Changes due to this condition pose challenges as well as opportunities for students and educators. The purpose of this study is to explore information on challenges and opportunities in online learning so that the results of this study can provide policy recommendations in the implementation of learning in the following semester. This survey research was conducted by distributing questionnaires (google forms) related to the challenges and learning opportunities for the second-semester students of the 2019 batch of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University Malang. The results obtained indicate that elements of student dissatisfaction dominate each aspect of the majority during online learning. The conclusion obtained from this research is that online learning has obstacles to be transformed into opportunities as an alternative problem solving to the stability of the quality of Education.

Relationship Between Students' School Success and Factors in the Context of the Family Environment

This paper discusses the framework in which the educational process takes place and the impact of family variables on student success. The aim of the research is to determine the basic characteristics of the connection between the contextual factors of the family environment and the school success of students, in the field of mathematics and the Serbian language. The research involved 300 teachers – 150 mathematics teachers and 150 Serbian language teachers, as well as 600 of their students. A descriptive method was used, and data were collected using a survey and scaling technique. For the success of students, the interest of parents in school and the success of students, the involvement of parents in school activities are more important than the overall conditions for learning and working at home. The grade in mathematics is conditioned by the general conditions for learning at home. However, only 6.1% of the dependent variable (mathematics grade) explains the independent variables. 9.3% of the variance in the assessment of the Serbian language was explained by the conditions for learning and working at home. Parents' interest in school explains 13.1% of the variance in mathematics. Parents' interest in school explains 14.3% of the variance of the grade in the Serbian language.

The Mental Health Status and Associated Factors Among Medical Students Engaged in Online Learning at Home During the Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study From China

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the mental health status of medical students engaged in online learning at home during the pandemic, and explore the potential risk factors of mental health.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via an online survey among 5,100 medical students from Wannan Medical College in China. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale (DASS-21) was used to measure self-reported symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress among medical students during online learning in the pandemic.Results: In total, 4,115 participants were included in the study. The prevalence symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress were 31.9, 32.9, and 14.6%, respectively. Depression was associated with gender, grade, length of schooling, relationship with father, students' daily online learning time, and students' satisfaction with online learning effects. Anxiety was associated with gender, length of schooling, relationship with father, relationship between parents, students' daily online learning time, and students' satisfaction with online learning effects. Stress was associated with grade, relationship with father, relationship between parents, students' daily online learning time, and students' satisfaction with online learning effects.Conclusions: Nearly one-third of medical students survived with varying degrees of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms during online learning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gender, grade, length of schooling, family environment, and online learning environment play vital roles in medical students' mental health. Families and schools should provide targeted psychological counseling to high-risk students (male, second-year and third-year, four-year program). The findings of this study can provide reference for educators to cope with the psychological problems and formulate the mental health curriculum construction among medical students during online learning.
