Processing Chinese relative clauses in context by Italian L3 learners

The present study investigates third language (L3) learners’ processing of Chinese subject and object relative clauses in a supportive context. Using a self-paced reading task, we tested native Italian L3 learners of Mandarin Chinese and native Chinese speakers. The results showed that the L3 learners read significantly more slowly than the native speakers in all the target regions. Also, in the head noun region, they read object relative clauses significantly more slowly compared to subject relative clauses, indicating a preference for the latter. By contrast, for the native speakers, no significant differences were observed between subject and object relative clauses in any of the target regions. The L3 learners’ performance offers support for the Structural Distance Hypothesis over the Dependency Locality Theory, and the contrast between the two populations indicates that context is at play in the processing of relative clauses.

Research on the Application of Cultural Resources Based on Yi Language in Chinese Curriculum of Middle School

<p>The language and culture of each nation is the crystallization of the excellent culture of the Chinese nation. Each nation's culture has its own unique characteristics. It reflects the soul spirit and life yearning of Chinese nation. The Chinese curriculum of China is created by all nationalities. Its content contains all the traditional Chinese cultural ideas and spiritual yearning. The content of Chinese subject is an important cultural carrier of the Chinese nation. However, the current Chinese teaching ignores the inheritance and guidance of Yi language and culture. This paper analyzes and discusses the application of cultural resources of Yi language in Chinese curriculum of middle school, and finally comes to a conclusion.</p>

Visual Style of 21 Intelectual Property Right (IPR) Certified Lasem Batik Motifs as the Expression of Cultural Hybridity

The problem in this research derived from the fact that many Lasem batik entrepreneurs nowadays had limited knowledge of the novel characteristics of Lasem batik and hardly aware of its geographical indication. The research objective was to identify how the cultural hybridity of Chinese-Javanese culture and Lasem geographical environment were reflected by both the Tionghoa Peranakan-descent and Javanese-descent artists through the visual signs in the batik design. The purposive samples used were 21 Lasem batik motifs made by Tionghoa Peranakan-descent and Javanese-descent entrepreneurs which already IPR-certified. The method used was a compositional interpretation by interpreting each batik motif composition according to its content (subject matter), color, spatial organization, and expressive content (the combined effect of subject matter and visual form). The finding reveals that Lasem visual style hybridity is generally visible in: (1) the use of Chinese subject matter combined with Javanese motifs, (2) the use of Chinese subject matter combined with local Javanese isen-isen (texture), and (3) the rich use of red (from Chinese batik visual style) combined with brown (from Javanese batik visual style). This finding can be used as a reference guide for latter Lasem batik entrepreneurs to maintain the particular characteristics of Lasem batik while developing other batik motifs innovation.

A Case Study on the Content Infiltration of Positive Mental Health Education in Chinese Teaching

Conducting the content infiltration of positive mental health education in Chinese teaching is not only the requirement of positive mental health education, but also the requirement of Chinese subject teaching itself. On the basis of summarizing the practical teaching experience, this paper summarizes four methods to conduct the content infiltration of positive mental health education in Chinese teaching, that is: constructing mainstream stories to promote positive identification; bringing students into situation to inspire introspection; reshaping students’ positive mind to promote application; arranging writing exercise to promote students’ comprehension.

Strong and weak pronouns in the covert system of pronouns

In this article, which is taken almost verbatim from parts of Agreement Beyond Phi (Miyagawa, Shigeru. 2017. Agreement beyond phi. Linguistic Inquiry Monograph 75. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press.), I focus on a puzzling observation about subject pro across languages: in languages such as Japanese and those of Romance, the subject pro behaves exactly like a pronoun in being able to freely refer to entities in the discourse with reasonable context, and also to refer sentence internally to a subject, an object, or other phrases. However, in Chinese, the subject pro is extremely limited in its reference potential: it is able to refer to a discourse entity in very narrow contexts, and sentence internally, its antecedent is limited to the subject. I show that the Chinese subject pro demonstrates the principles of Strong Uniformity, by depending on ϕ-feature agreement for sentence-internal reference, and when that option isn’t taken, switches to the Topic feature to refer to a discourse entity.

Embedding library services in research stages: Chinese subject service and the research lifecycle model

Through in-depth interviews, we analyzed user needs at different stages of scientific research, and constructed a library service model that can be practically integrated into all research stages. This article highlights the subject service model in use in Chinese academic libraries and demonstrates how it can work to support researchers across the research life-cycle.
