Flow Direction-Dependent Elastic Instability in a Symmetry-Breaking Microchannel

This paper reports flow direction-dependent elastic instability in a symmetry-breaking microchannel. The microchannel consisted of a square chamber and a nozzle structure. A viscoelastic polyacrylamide solution was used for the instability demonstration. The instability was realized as the viscoelastic flow became asymmetric and unsteady in the microchannel when the flow exceeded a critical Weissenberg number. The critical Weissenberg number was found to be different for the forward-directed flow and the backward-directed flow in the microchannel.

Fluid elastic instability and vortex induced vibration parameters in finned tube arrays with P/D ratio 1.79

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the effect of fin geometry on mechanisms of flow induced vibration. Finned tube arrays are used in a heat exchanger to increase its efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of geometric parameters of the fin fluid elastic instability and vortex shedding. In this paper, the effect of fin height, fin density and tube pitch ratio for parallel triangular tube array on fluid elastic instability and vortex shedding is analyzed. Design/methodology/approach Experimental analysis was carried out on a parallel triangular finned tube array with a pitch ratio of 1.79 subjected to water crossflow. The experimentation aims to study fluid elastic instability and vortex-induced vibration mechanism responsible for flow induced vibration for finned tube array. A fully flexible finned tube array of the copper tube was used with its base diameter of 19.05 mm and thickness of 2 mm. Over the tube surface, crimped fins of height 6 mm and the same material are welded spirally with fin density 8.47 mm and 2.82 mm. Experimental analysis was carried out on a test setup developed for the same. The results obtained for the finned tube array were compared with those for the plain tube array with the same base tube diameter. Findings For parallel triangular tube array of copper material, test results show that critical velocity increases with an increase in fin pitch density for low pitch tube array. Before the occurrence of instability, the rate of growth in tube vibrations is high for plain tubes compared to that with fin tubes. The results based on Owen’s hypothesis show vortex shedding before the occurrence of fluid elastic instability. The effect of fin geometry on vortex-induced forces is analyzed. For the tube array pattern understudy, the values of Conner’s constant K for coarse fin-tube and fine fin tube array are obtained, respectively, 6.14 and 7.25. Originality/value This paper fulfills the need for research on the effect of fin geometry on fluid elastic instability and Vortex shedding on a tube array subjected to water cross flow when the pitch ratio is less than two, i.e. with a low pitch ratio.

Two Way Coupled Fields Multi-Physics Modeling Is Investigated as an Additional Approach to Address Fluid Elastic Instability

Two way coupled fields multi-physics modeling is investigated as an additional approach to address out-of-plane FEI. It is established in the literature that to model the damping-controlled fluid elastic instability, a finite time delay between tube vibration and fluid perturbation must be realized. The phase lag between tube vibration and flow perturbation due to damping must be adequately captured by the model. The effects of tube frequency, turbulence level, location, and mean gap velocity on the relative phase values must also be captured. This approach will allow the time delay between tube vibration and flow perturbation due to damping, as well as turbulence, and stiffness to be intrinsically modeled. We will introduce the applicability of the method to in-plane FEI in a future paper once we have based lined it against out of plane FEI empirical results.

The Emergence of Sequential Buckling in Reconfigurable Hexagonal Networks Embedded into Soft Matrix

The extreme and unconventional properties of mechanical metamaterials originate in their sophisticated internal architectures. Traditionally, the architecture of mechanical metamaterials is decided on in the design stage and cannot be altered after fabrication. However, the phenomenon of elastic instability, usually accompanied by a reconfiguration in periodic lattices, can be harnessed to alter their mechanical properties. Here, we study the behavior of mechanical metamaterials consisting of hexagonal networks embedded into a soft matrix. Using finite element analysis, we reveal that under specific conditions, such metamaterials can undergo sequential buckling at two different strain levels. While the first reconfiguration keeps the periodicity of the metamaterial intact, the secondary buckling is accompanied by the change in the global periodicity and formation of a new periodic unit cell. We reveal that the critical strains for the first and the second buckling depend on the metamaterial geometry and the ratio between elastic moduli. Moreover, we demonstrate that the buckling behavior can be further controlled by the placement of the rigid circular inclusions in the rotation centers of order 6. The observed sequential buckling in bulk metamaterials can provide additional routes to program their mechanical behavior and control the propagation of elastic waves.

Elastic-instability–enabled locomotion

Locomotion of an organism interacting with an environment is the consequence of a symmetry-breaking action in space-time. Here we show a minimal instantiation of this principle using a thin circular sheet, actuated symmetrically by a pneumatic source, using pressure to change shape nonlinearly via a spontaneous buckling instability. This leads to a polarized, bilaterally symmetric cone that can walk on land and swim in water. In either mode of locomotion, the emergence of shape asymmetry in the sheet leads to an asymmetric interaction with the environment that generates movement––via anisotropic friction on land, and via directed inertial forces in water. Scaling laws for the speed of the sheet of the actuator as a function of its size, shape, and the frequency of actuation are consistent with our observations. The presence of easily controllable reversible modes of buckling deformation further allows for a change in the direction of locomotion in open arenas and the ability to squeeze through confined environments––both of which we demonstrate using simple experiments. Our simple approach of harnessing elastic instabilities in soft structures to drive locomotion enables the design of novel shape-changing robots and other bioinspired machines at multiple scales.
