Analysis of bistability at the coupling between waveguide and whispering gallery modes of a nonlinear hemicylinder

The optical bistability caused by the coupling between modes of the parallel-plate waveguide and a nonlinear hemicylindrical crystal is studied using theoretical and numerical analysis. In such a system a waveguide channel is parallelly coupled to whispering gallery modes of a hemicylindrical microresonator ensuring bistable behaviour at input intensities of the order of a few MW/cm2. The characteristic minimum switching time of the system (around 30 ps) can be controlled by varying the thickness of the metal layer which couples the waveguide and whispering gallery modes. This is conditioned by the change of the quality Q-factor, as well as the coupling coefficient of the resonator. The main advantages of the system are fabrication simplicity, small sizes of the order of 3 µm and the possibility of adjusting the processes by making use of the electro-optical effect.

Probing higher order optical modes in all-dielectric nanodisk, -square, and -triangle by aperture type scanning near-field optical microscopy

All-dielectric nanoantennas, consisting of high refractive index semiconductor material, are drawing a great deal of attention in nanophotonics. Owing to their ability to manipulate efficiently the flow of light within sub-wavelength volumes, they have become the building blocks of a wide range of new photonic metamaterials and devices. The interaction of the antenna with light is largely governed by its size, geometry, and the symmetry of the multitude of optical cavity modes it supports. Already for simple antenna shapes, unraveling the full modal spectrum using conventional far-field techniques is nearly impossible due to the spatial and spectral overlap of the modes and their symmetry mismatch with incident radiation fields. This limitation can be circumvented by using localized excitation of the antenna. Here, we report on the experimental near-field probing of optical higher order cavity modes (CMs) and whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in amorphous silicon nanoantennas with simple, but fundamental, geometrical shapes of decreasing rotational symmetry: a disk, square, and triangle. Tapping into the near-field using an aperture type scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) opens a window on a rich variety of optical patterns resulting from the local excitation of antenna modes of different order with even and odd parity. Numerical analysis of the antenna and SNOM probe interaction shows how the near-field patterns reveal the node positions of – and allows us to distinguish between – cavity and whispering gallery modes. As such, this study contributes to a richer and deeper characterization of the structure of light in confined nanosystems, and their impact on the structuring of the light fields they generate.

Numerical simulation of optical coupling between a microring resonator and a directly connected straight waveguide

We studied numerically optical coupling of whispering gallery modes of a microring resonator with modes of a radially directed straight waveguide connected to the microring. Optical outcoupling from the resonator through the waveguide was calculated for different widths of the latter. The output was maximized under conditions when the width fits an odd integer number of half-wavelengths of light inside the microring.

Nonlinear imaging of whispering gallery modes in GaN microwires

In this work non-scanning far-field nonlinear optical microscopy is employed to study the whispering gallery modes in tapered GaN microwire resonators. We demonstrate the confinement of whispering gallery modes under near-infrared excitation with the photon energy close to half of GaN bandgap. Our results indicate the enhancement of yellow-green luminescence by whispering gallery modes in GaN microwires.

Electromagnetic fields and applications for anisotropic / photonic structures

Το πρώτο μέρος αφορά τoν σχεδιασμό κεραίας με σκοπό την εμφύτευση της σε περιβάλλον ανθρώπινου ιστού. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η κεραία προορίζεται για την ενσωμάτωση της σε εφαρμογές τύπου βηματοδότη, δηλαδή σε εφαρμογές που έχουν ως περιβάλλον την μορφολογία του ανθρώπινου στήθους. Επιπλέον πραγματοποιείται εκτενής συγκριτική μελέτη όλων των συνδυασμών των τεχνικών σμίκρυνσης που αναφέρονται στην βιβλιογραφία, προκειμένου να εξαχθεί ένας οδηγός για τους σχεδιαστές εμφυτεύσιμων κεραιών, όσον αφορά τις δυνατότητες σμίκρυνσης που προσφέρει ο κάθε συνδυασμός και επομένως να διευκολύνει την διαδικασία σχεδίασης.Το δεύτερο, και κύριο μέρος, της διδακτορικής διατριβής πραγματεύεται την επίλυση ηλεκτρομαγνητικών (ΗΜ) προβλημάτων διαφόρων τύπων. Αρχικά, αναπτύχθηκε μια μέθοδος με σκοπό τον υπολογισμό του σκεδαζόμενου ηλεκτρομαγνητικού πεδίου από κυλινδρικούς σκεδαστές, με άπειρο μήκος κατά μήκος του άξονα του κυλίνδρου. Κύριος πυλώνας της μεθόδου αυτής αποτέλεσε η χρήση των Coupled Fields Volume Integral Equations (CFVIEs), καθώς και η ανάπτυξη των άγνωστων πεδίων σε αναπτύγματα τύπου Dini. Η μέθοδος αυτή μπορεί να χειριστεί με ευκολία ηλεκτρικά μεγάλες διατάξεις, οι οποίες αποτελούνται από ισοτροπικά/ανισοτροπικά υλικά, ακόμη και με υψηλή ανομοιογένεια. Στην συνέχεια, αναπτύχθηκε υπολογιστική μέθοδος για την εξαγωγή των κυματαριθμών αποκοπής για την περίπτωση του κυλινδρικού κυματοδηγού κυκλικής διατομής, με μεταλλικά τοιχώματα. Η μέθοδος αυτή, επίσης, στηρίχθηκε στις CFVIEs καθώς και στα αναπτύγματα τύπου Dini. Τέλος, αναπτύχθηκε ασυμπτωτική μέθοδος για τον υπολογισμό των μιγαδικών συντονισμών των Whispering Gallery Modes (WGM) για την περίπτωση κυλινδρικού συντονιστή. Για την εξαγωγή των ασυμπτωτικών εκφράσεων χρησιμοποιήθηκε η συνάρτηση Airy.
