Taxonomic and nomenclatural inventory of the Umbelliferae in Central Asia, described on the basis of collections of the National Herbarium of Uzbekistan

The National Herbarium of Uzbekistan (TASH) in Tashkent is the oldest and largest botanical collection not only in Uzbekistan, but also in the entire region of Central Asia. The article presents a complete inventory of the type material of Umbelliferae taxa stored in the National Herbarium of Uzbekistan (TASH), as well as some key events of the TASH history and its main personalities. The herbarium in its current state is a result of merging of seven Uzbekistanian herbaria. TASH played a special role in the studies of Central Asian Umbelliferae (Apiaceae). TASH currently holds type specimens of 130 taxa of Umbelliferae, including 125 species and 5 intraspecific taxa (according to the ranks proposed in protologues). The TASH Umbelliferae type collection contains holotypes of 82 taxa, lectotypes of 36 taxa, isolectotypes of 22 taxa, syntypes of 15 taxa, and isotypes of 19 taxa. The names of 54 taxa have been preserved in the modern nomenclature of the Umbelliferae, whereas the names of 46 and 33 taxa are now considered as nomenclatural and taxonomic synonyms. EU ANTI-COVID POLICY IN THE WESTERN BALKANS

The pandemic generated by COVID-19 has brought new challenges for global politics. For this reason, the EU has been changing its policy towards the Western Balkans. The entire region is known to be engaged in the European integration process, which has received new issues associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the «Team Europe» package was launched on April 2020 to support EU partner countries in response to coronavirus and its consequences. This programme includes the most vulnerable countries of the European Neighborhood Policy, Africa and the Western Balkans. The core task was to back the health system and the socio-economic recovery of the partner states. In addition, the distribution of vaccines against COVID-19, called as «vaccine diplomacy», has become a peculiar policy area. The EU is vigorously involved in this process, especially allocating funds to the COVAX program and its internal distribution mechanisms. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the EU anti-crisis policy in the Western Balkans. The article deals with the initial measures implemented by the EU to aid the countries of the region. Moreover, the author touches upon the issue of the launching of the EU’s vaccine distribution process.

Late quaternary palaeoclimates of western India : A geoarchaeological approach

Western India comprises parts of the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. This region has varied climate and landscape. Northwestern Rajasthan is an area of internal drainage, with dunes, playas and rocky pediments. The Luni, Sabarmati and Mahi basins to the south of this zone show the influence of both aeolian and fluvial processes. Aeolian landforms are absent in the Nrmada, Tapi, Godavari and Bhima basins and fluvial aggradation has alternated with erosion in response to climatic change. Dominance of semi-arid to arid climate throughtout the Quaternary in the entire region has ment that Quaternary geological processes have been weak, preserving many features of the Tertiary in the present landscape. The variation in the geomorphic processes shaping the landscape and the complex links between geomorphic proceses and climate mean that our understanding of palaeoclimates in western India in far from complete. This paper gives an overview of the Late Quaternary palaeoclimate of western India, based primarily on recent work by the authors in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. Some issues in the palaeoclimatic interpretation of the geological record are discussed. Signatures of Late Pleistocene aridity, fluctuating climate during the Pleistocene Holocene transitional period, early Holocene humid climate and increased aridity from the middle Holocene onwards are reflected in different ways in the different landscape settings.

Spatial and Temporal Evolution of Ecological Vulnerability Based on Vulnerability Scoring Diagram Model in Shennongjia, China

Background: Shennongjia is one of the most important ecological function areas and ecologically vulnerable zones in the world. With the rapid development of social economies, especially tourism, the ecological environment of Shennongjia has experienced profound changes. Results: (1) During the study period, the overall ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia is in a mild vulnerability level, exhibiting differentiation characteristics of high in the northeast and low in the southwest. High vulnerability zones are mainly distributed in the main towns and roads. (2) The risk of ecological vulnerability of the entire region presents the characteristics of continuous decline. (3) Land-use types, population density, and vegetation coverage are the main factors driving the evolution of ecological vulnerability. (4) A high level of coupling coordination exists between ecological vulnerability and landscape patterns.Conclusions: Analyses of the ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia shows that the entire region is in a mild vulnerability level. The extreme vulnerability risk of the ecological environment shows polarization. The evolution of ecological environment in Shennongjia is the result of the interaction between human activities and natural environment. This study offers an effective way to assess ecological vulnerability and provides some strategies and guidance for improving ecological security.

Phosphorylation of interfacial phosphosite leads to increased binding of Rap-Raf complex

The effect of phosphorylation of a serine residue in the Rap protein, residing at the complex interface of Rap-Raf complex is studied using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. As the phosphosite of interest (SER39) is buried at the interface of the Rap-Raf complex, phosphorylation of only Rap protein was simulated and then complexed with the RBD of Raf for further analysis of complex stability. Our simulations reveal that the phosophorylation increases the binding of complex through strong electrostatic interactions and changes the charge distribution of the interface significantly. This is manifested as an increase in stable salt-bridge interactions between the Rap and Raf of the complex. Network analysis clearly shows that the phosphorylation of SER39 reorganizes the community network to include the entire region of Raf chain, including, Raf L4 loop potentially affecting downstream signalling.

Transmission spectra of transparent electrodes based on oriented platinum nanowires at various concentrations of the metal used

The paper investigates the optical transparency dependence of a coating based on an oriented network of platinum nanowires on the amount of metal used. Oriented platinum nanowires on a glass surface are produced by chemical deposition from an aqueous hexachloroplatinic acid solution. The topography of the deposited metal layer on glass is visualized using atomic force microscopy. Optical transparency was investigated with a spectrophotometer. In almost the entire region of optical radiation, the transparency is approximately 98%. The absorption spectrum shows that the absorption coefficient increases sharply in the near UV region.

Configuration-Based Promotion: A New Approach to Destination Image Sustainability

The assessment of tourist destination images should not only be the arrangement of multiple influencing factors. This study explores the complex causal relationship for tourist destination images based on a configuration perspective to enhance the overall tourism image using the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method. The configurational paths for promoting tourism image can be categorized into two types and nine configurations in Shandong Province. Therefore, this study recommends augmenting the tourism image of the entire region with the logical thinking of “segmentation–integration” and “enhancing strengths–supplementing weakness” and finally realizing a sustainable tourist destination image.

To describe an assessment method of ecological vulnerability, explain its application in Shennongjia, and propose optimization strategies to reduce the risk of ecosystem vulnerability and maintain regional ecological security and stability. Results (1) During the study period, the overall ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia is in a mild vulnerability level, exhibiting differentiation characteristics of high in the northeast and low in the southwest. High vulnerability zones are mainly distributed in the main towns and roads of Shennongjia. (2) The risk of ecological vulnerability of the entire region presents the characteristics of continuous decline. The ecological vulnerability composite index reaches the lowest value of 2.51 in 2018. (3) Land-use types, population density, and vegetation coverage are the main factors driving the evolution of ecological vulnerability. (4) A high level of coupling coordination exists between ecological vulnerability and landscape patterns, and the contribution of patch number and aggregation index to ecological vulnerability is substantial. Conclusions Analyses of the ecological vulnerability of Shennongjia shows that the entire region is in a mild vulnerability level. The extreme vulnerability risk of the northeast, south and southwest areas appears gradually, the vulnerability degree of the ecological environment shows polarization. The evolution of ecological environment in Shennongjia is the result of the interaction between human activities and natural environment. This study offers an effective way to assess ecological vulnerability and provides some strategies and guidance for improving ecological security.

Climate Change and Human Conflict in the Sahel

Most climate models predict more rain in the future in the Sahel, but with more concentrated rainfall. Since the droughts of the 1980s, rains have increased, which has led to a regreening of the entire region. There is, however, a dominant narrative postulating that climate change will lead to drier conditions and desertification in the Sahel, which again will lead to resource scarcity, widespread migration, and more conflicts. This chapter critically investigates this narrative based on a review of international research. It considers conflict between farmers and herders, between the state and armed groups, in addition to jihadi violence that has increased in region in recent years. It concludes that the droughts in the 1980s only played a minor role in explaining conflicts, while the root causes were political and historical. State policies tend to lead to the marginalization of pastoralists. In areas where pastoralism and farming overlap as the main forms of land use, there are continuous conflicts of varying scale and intensity. These conflicts are primarily caused by politics, not climate change.

ENTIRE-REGION CONSTITUTIVE RELATION FOR TRELOAR'S DATA

ABSTRACT Hyperelastic materials can experience a large deformation process. A constitutive relation suitable for an entire region from small, moderate, to large deformations is of great importance for practical applications such as fracture problems. Treloar's data are first investigated, and the tension curve is divided into three regimes: small-to-moderate regime, strain-hardening regime, and limiting-chain regime. Next, the modeling theory of hyperelastic materials is introduced, and the tensile behaviors of basic energy functions are analyzed for different deformation regimes. Finally, a successive procedure is suggested to establish an entire-region constitutive relation and then applied to Treloar's data. The present constitutive relation can maintain the initial shear modulus while the experimental data are satisfactorily predicted. The present procedure is simple and feasible and hence applicable to other hyperelastic materials when their entire-region constitutive relations are studied based on experimental data.
