Learning and working are two significant social networks in preparing individuals for future life. An understanding of learning in the workplace can inform how we organize institutional learning in order to produce competent and relevant vocational education and training (VET) graduates for the world of work. This paper explores the existing collaborative activities in the masters in vocational pedagogy (MVP) study program at Kyambogo University in Uganda and their linkage with workplaces. Two research questions were posed. (1) What collaborative activities are there in the MVP program that allow for learning in vocational teacher training institutions (VTIs) and workplaces? 2) How is knowledge constructed amongst the participating actors? The questions were investigated through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with purposively sampled participants. An analysis of the documents from the MVP project, including program reports, collaborating stakeholders meeting minutes and students’ theses, was done. The findings revealed that field expeditions and action research (AR) projects were the key activities incorporated in the MVP program to support the back and forth learning from workplaces. Through interactions and sharing practices, these activities promoted learning by solving problems encountered at work and by doing real life tasks.

Tourism and hospitality sector in Tanzania contributes to 18 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and about 10 percent employment rate in the country. However, industry professionals are complaining about the quality of human resource from training institutions. While some authors have addressed the quality of human resources in relation to graduates’ skills possession using the managers, trainers and the nature of services they render, the researcher could not find a study that has addressed the issue in relation to programme design from the trainers, heads of department and hotel managers. This study was set to answer the main research question: How is VET hospitality programme designed to contribute to skills development among the graduates in Arusha region? The study employed convergent design to assess VET hospitality programme design in developing skills among the graduates. Participants were obtained through simple random sampling of training institutions and purposive sampling of hotels belonging to HAT in Arusha region. Data were collected through semi structured interview with the hotel managers and heads of department, structured interview with the trainers and content analysis of programme document. Data were analyzed by transcription of data from the interviews. Programme activities were used to analyze the collected data and used for data interpretation. Interpretation and discussion of data analysis results were summarized and compared with the reviewed literature and theories. The findings for this study indicated that VET programme for Food and Beverages Service and Sales and Front Office Operations are well designed to enhance skills development among the graduates and if well implemented should lead to the acquisition of hospitality knowledge, skills, values and attitudes. English and communication skills, as a supporting course needs to be structured for implementers to understand designated learning outcomes, learning activities, teaching and training methods and assessment activities.

In the Republic of Moldova, young people who intend to initiate or develop their business are one of the targeted support groups within the framework of the state policy. The article analyzes various aspects of engaging young people in entrepreneurial activity: a brief assessment of statistical indicators is given; support measures for young entrepreneurs, implemented by the Moldovan government and proposed by international/foreign organizations are outlined; features of young entrepreneurs and self-employed are revealed. Emphasis is placed on young graduates of Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions. The main results and conclusions are largely based on a survey of graduates of vocational education and training institutions who have already set up their business or are self-employed. The survey had been implemented during 2016-2017 with the active participation of the authors. The results of the study showed that young people are interested in entrepreneurship and learning the basics of entrepreneurship has a significant motivating influence on the initiation of their business and self-employment. Often, the business of the young is unregistered and is being combined with employment. Only one third of the respondents know about organizations that can provide them with various forms of support. One of the conclusions of the study presents that positive changes can be achieved much faster by combining the efforts of different stakeholders, in this case – the government, educational institutions, non-profit organizations and external donors.

Match warm-ups in association football represent well-respected practice in order to prepare and optimise performance. While the structure of warm-ups is commonly studied from a physiological perspective, the skill and performance training approaches influencing warm-ups prior to major professional football competition appear to be particularly underexplored. Using the largely under-researched context of the football goalkeeper, the aim of this multi-method research design was to investigate two overarching research questions: (1) how are professional football goalkeeper match warm-ups structured? and (2) why does current coaching practice of expert goalkeeper coaches support this microstructure? Eleven systematic observations investigated the microstructure and training approaches applied to top-level professional football goalkeeper match warm-ups and seven semi-structured interviews with expert goalkeeper coaches further explored current coaching practice in this specific context. Results indicate that professional football goalkeeper warm-up structures include similar microstructures that progress in complexity and contain both simple ‘technical’ and more match-representative ‘applied skills’ exercises. Underlying reasons for goalkeeper coaches adhering to the observed warm-up structures are based on experts’ understanding of applying an athlete-centred coaching approach. Hereof, goalkeeper coaches stated warm-up routines to be individualised towards goalkeeper’s needs and focused on performance stability in order to make goalkeepers feel ‘match-ready’ and confident.

Abstract Educator morale has been a focus of educational leaders and managers throughout the world, because without educator motivation and morale the learning and teaching in our schools would be grossly compromised. It is against this background that this research was carried out to find out lecturers’ perceptions of leadership traits which promote motivation in a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college in South Africa. The research questions which guided this research were as follows: What are lecturers′ perceptions of leadership traits which promote motivation in an educational and training institution in South Africa? How can educational leaders and management in South Africa integrate their experiences and practices with what educators believe are the main drivers of high lecturer morale? A qualitative study was used to generate data that would be useful in answering the research questions. The nature of this qualitative study required in-depth interviews with participants where qualitative data was generated and interpreted. The researcher saw it fit to use in-depth interviews because this method of data generation would enable the researcher to capture the perspectives, views and opinions of participants about leadership traits which facilitate motivation in the South African TVET College in particular and the South African education system in general. The views of the participants showed that leadership traits such as accountability, responsibility, empathy, decisiveness, assertiveness, charisma, pro-activeness, motivation and communication are the life-blood, foundation and bed-rock of effective leadership and management in the TVET College.
