This article explores the interplay between different types of knowledge and rationality in care work through a case study of a nursing home innovation project in a Danish municipality. The aim is to understand the implications for innovation processes and dissemination within the context of elder care. Care work, in some sense, relies on relational and contextual knowledge which may lead to challenges when innovation and best practices are to be diffused across organizations. This is especially true since diffusion often relies on codification of practices and knowledge. Caring rationality is essential to how technologies and methods are practiced in the care situation, and thus also essential for best practices and how they are disseminated. However, other types of codified and explicit rationality are equally important. The article concludes that there are several types of knowledge in play in care work practices and innovation, and it indicates that communities of practice could be key to understanding how to share and learn from best practices across organizations.

This case study explores university spin-off (USO) team building from leadership and intrapreneurship perspectives. The study sheds light on a USO team member’s view of team building, examining the inherent tensions and challenges, but also the best practices of team building in general. Thus, the case is based on narrative study and evocative autoethnography, providing knowledge from an insider´s perspective of USO team building and also team leadership, especially for supporting intrapreneurship. The intrapreneurship allows an employee to act like an entrepreneur—in this case, within a USO project team. Instead of considering team building as a completely rational process, the case stresses the need to take into account soft aspects, like emotions, in USO team building. This case study should assist other innovative teams in the future to process narratively different factors, relationships and team behaviour within innovation project teams.

The agri-food sector is under pressure to move towards sustainability and broad socio-technical changes are needed. In such encompassing innovation processes that concern the whole agri-food chain, actors with different institutional backgrounds are confronted with each others interests, ideas and perspectives. Framing, then, may both support and hinder the alignment of actors and interests. In this paper we investigate how framing occurs in multi-actor innovation projects and how it facilitates or hinders the continuity of these projects. We first review the broad literature on framing, which leads to a typology of three levels of framing: face-to-face interaction (between individuals), global discourse (within society) and localised collective (in projects). In addition, we add a third category to the traditional distinction between ‘cognitive’ and ‘interactional’ framing. We argue that in socio-technical innovations also ‘material’ framing occurs. In an empirical case study, based on in-depth interviews and document analysis of the Roundel project (2004-2010), a Dutch innovation project aimed at sustainable egg production and marketing, we trace and analyse these different forms of framing. The project survived several critical episodes, due to changes in framing. Our study yields general lessons about framing in complex innovation projects, both conceptual and practical.

Certifications, quality systems and standardization carriers systemic innovativeness, since they usually are established after a lengthy period of research, evidence-finding and testing. Ideally, they incorporate the most decisive best practices that will benefit firms, customers, and wider groups of stakeholders in communities. Such systems can be seen as driving forces for innovation, and memberships in them is likely to enhance prospective changes in the any industry. This chapter addresses the prospects of diffusion of innovation through certification and quality systems, using Rogers (1995) diffusion theory explaining adoption based on the five attributes. Findings from a qualitative multi-case study of the national tourism quality certifications of VisitScotland (Quality Assurance), New Zealand (Qualmark) and Iceland (Vakinn) is used to illustrate and explain diffusion. The study shows that relative advantage and compatibility seem most critical for adoption. Complexity and observability are important too, while trialability seems less obtainable in this particular context.

Against the background of a crisis of elder care in Germany, this article examines the expansion of informal elder care work in terms of exploitation. A concept of indirect exploitation is used that takes into account the special characteristics of highly feminised elder care work and Germany’s elder care market. The article shows, through an empirical qualitative case study, that Germany’s elder care regime is maintained through the politically supported exploitation of socially vulnerable population groups in favour of lowering the costs of social reproduction in an ageing capitalist society.

Background: The theoretical background of this article is on the model developed of knowledge transfer between universities and the industry in order to access the best practices and adapt to the study case in question regarding the model of promoting and manage innovation within the universities that best contribute with solution and projects to the business field. Objective: The development of a knowledge transfer model is the main goal of this article, supported in the best practices known and, also, to reflect in the main measurement definitions to evaluate the High Education Institution performance in this area. Methods: The method for this article development is the case study method because it allows the fully understanding of the dynamics present within a single setting, and the subject examined to comprehend what is being done and what the dynamics mean. The case study does not have a data collection method, as it is a research that may rely on multiple sources of evidence and data which should be converged. Results: Since it’s a case study this article present a fully description of the model proposed and implemented for the knowledge transfer process of the institution. Conclusion: Still in a discussion phase, this article presents as conclusions some questions and difficulties that could be pointed out, as well as some good perspectives of performed activity developed.

Abstract Public-Private Innovation Partnerships (PPIPs) are increasingly used as a tool for addressing ‘wicked’ public sector challenges. ‘Innovation’ is, however, frequently treated as a ‘magic’ concept: used unreflexively, taken to be axiomatically ‘good’, and left undefined within policy programmes. Using McConnell’s framework of policy success and failure and a case study of a multi-level PPIP in the English health service (NHS Test Beds), this paper critically explores the implications of the mobilisation of innovation in PPIP policy and practice. We highlight how the interplay between levels (macro/micro and policy maker/recipient) can shape both emerging policies and their prospects for success or failure. The paper contributes to an understanding of PPIP success and failure by extending McConnell’s framework to explore inter-level effects between policy and innovation project, and demonstrating how the success of PPIP policy cannot be understood without recognising the particular political effects of ‘innovation’ on formulation and implementation.

AbstractThe digitization and online dissemination of the Popol Vuh, a historical indigenous knowledge work, poses distinct ethical, legal, intellectual, and technological concerns for humanities researchers and information practitioners seeking to study and digitally curate works through a decolonized consciousness. Ongoing debates on data sovereignty, the repatriation of cultural artifacts, and cultural appropriation question the ability of researchers and information practitioners to effectively steward indigenous knowledge works in a digital environment. While consensus on best practices for the postcolonial digital library or archive remain to be established, information inequity continues to persist, effacing indigenous knowledge, languages, and content from the knowledge society. The following case study will discuss the results of a 10-year multi-institutional initiative to curate, repatriate, and steward the reproduction of an indigenous knowledge work online. From the vantage point of the library, the case study will explore the project’s successes, failures, and the work left to be done.
