Functional indices of blood plasma and erythrocytes of whiterats exposed to low intensity radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation(RF-EMR) were studied. Two modes of irradiation were used: a) 1-timeaction during 2 hours, i.e. single 2-hour acute exposure; b) fractionalexposure to RF-EMR during 4 consecutive days for 0.5 hour daily.Sham-treated rats served as a Norm. On days 1, 5, 10 and 20 after thelast exposure 5 rats per observation day were sacrificed and bloodsamples were drawn to determine intensity of lipid peroxidation in bloodplasma and erythrocytes, integral antioxidant activity of water-solublenon-enzymatic antioxidants of rat blood plasma, erythrocyte membranepotential, K+ permeability across the erythrocytes membranes, and thefunctional state of the Ca2+-activated K+-channels of erythrocytes.According to data obtained, 900-MHz RF-EMR caused statisticallysignificant changes in the studied parameters both in early and lateobservation periods. Hence, the character and the dynamics of changesdepended on the mode of irradiation. Thus, a conclusion can be drawn that upon total influence on theorganism low intensive EMR with 900 MHz facilitates development oflong-lasting effect manifested as changes in functional characteristics ofblood plasma and red blood cells. Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions are increasing and are potentially of concern for Arctic-nesting seabirds, particularly those that spend part of their year near dense human habitation. Iceland Gulls (Larus glaucoides B. Meyer, 1822) breed in the eastern Canadian Arctic and spend the majority of winter in towns and cities in eastern Newfoundland. We measured Hg in breast feathers, blood plasma, and red blood cells of Iceland Gulls wintering in and around St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, from 2011 to 2014. Mercury in blood plasma comprised <10% of the total blood Hg. We found no difference in red blood cell Hg between first-winter and adult birds, which likely reflects their similar feeding habits. Feather Hg in adults was significantly greater than that in first-winter birds because adults had accumulated a greater body Hg burden to excrete (up to a year, compared with a few months' accumulation in first-winter birds). Overall, concentrations were among the lowest found for Larus spp. and Arctic gulls, suggesting that Hg does not pose a risk to Iceland Gulls at the present.

Objective. Analysis of issues related to the safety and quality of donated blood and its components. Materials and methods. Many years of experience of hematologists, immunologists, isoserologists, morphologists, biochemists in studying the composition, morpho-functional properties of cells and blood plasma, the use of donor blood and its components in clinical practice have made it possible to reconsider method of chemotherapy “multilateral action”. Results and discussion. One of the main axioms of modern transfusion medicine: chemotherapy should be performed strictly according to the indications and those blood components that are needed to ensure the viability of the body. The development of transfusiology has proved, with few exceptions, the inexpediency and even harmfulness of the use of whole donor blood. When using blood and its components, it is necessary to clearly consider extremely important point: the use will be in a planned manner, or in special circumstances. Blood components and blood plasma preparations have unique medicinal properties and there is currently no alternative to them. Each country is recommended to switch to self-sufficiency of blood components and their derivatives, to organize their own production structures that would meet the country’s domestic needs in blood components and preparations. The main components of the ideology of component chemotherapy are: recovery of blood component deficiency is not achieved on a “drop by drop” basis; no need to completely replace the existing deficiency of a cellular or protein component. Transfusions of blood components should be treated as a responsible invasive medical procedure – an operation that can have both immediate and long-term complications and consequences. Unreasonable transfusions of whole canned blood, especially after long periods of storage, are not only ineffective, but often pose a danger. In canned blood, during storage, complex biochemical metabolic processes take place both in cells and in plasma, which ultimately reduce the quality of both the blood itself and the morpho-functional properties of its individual components. Thus, 8-day storage of erythrocytes is the threshold after which erythrocytes begin to adversely affect the patient. Morpho-functional properties of blood components are directly dependent on the shelf life and distance of transportation. During the storage of blood and erythrocyte mass, the level of ATP decreases, on which the elasticity of the erythrocyte membrane depends. The magnitude of the negative electrical charge of the surface membrane of blood cells decreases. The number of prehemolytic forms of erythrocytes and cells that are not capable of reverse transformation increases. Within 1-4 days, leukocytes die, bacteria are released, so after this period, the greatest number of complications and reactions. Leukocytes and platelets form microaggregates at an early stage of storage, which can cause microembolism and distress syndrome. Microclots are formed, which include lysed blood cells and fibrin. The number of microclots increases every day, reaching on day 21 to 100 thousand/ml, so when transfusing it is advisable to use antiplatelet filters, rather than leukocyte. The use of bed leukofilters after a long period of storage of erythromass is not advisable, because there are no leukocytes. In addition, up to 2 % of erythrocytes are lost. The pH decreases, the content of 2,3-DFG, which is responsible for oxygen transport function (decreases by 50 % on the third day), hemolysis increases (up to 200 mg% of free hemoglobin). The concentration of potassium and ammonium ions increases. The recommended threshold for erythrocyte concentrate transfusions is a hemoglobin level of less than 70 g/l in adults and most children. It is important to use fresh-frozen plasma, erythrocyte concentrate and platelets obtained from one donor. Modern blood separators technically provide such an opportunity. Conditionally acceptable number of platelets in patients with injuries is more than 50×109/l cells, and in patients with combined brain injury is 100×109/l. Platelet concentrate obtained by the manual method from 4-5 donors leads to the development of refractoriness. With increasing shelf life of platelets, the functional properties of cells deteriorate significantly. All attempts to create the so-called artificial blood in the 19th century ended at the level of scientific developments. Synthetic and bioengineered cellular components of blood, hematopoietic factors, as well as hematopoietic stem cells are considered promising in the future. One of the possible ways to solve the problem of long-term storage of blood components, especially liquid groups, is cryopreservation of individual cells (erythrocytes) at moderately low (-20; -40; -80 ºС) and ultra-low (-165-196 ºС) temperatures, followed by deglycerization (washing), the use of special solutions for resuspension. With the development of low-temperature electric refrigeration equipment in Ukraine, this has become a reality. Conclusions. Practice has shown that both the blood itself and its components can neither be produced nor extracted as minerals, it can only be shared. All of the above indicates that blood donation is and will remain the main source of cellular components of the blood for at least the next decades.

AIM: The aim of this study was to measure the prevalence of myeloproliferative disorders in a sample of Iraqi patients and to measure the changes in patients’ blood parameters. BACKGROUND: Myeloproliferative disorders are a group of neoplasms affecting the bone marrow progenitor cells characterized by excess cells with a risk of transforming to acute leukemia. There is a gap in knowledge about the prevalence of Iraqi population. Thus, we investigated the prevalence and distribution of different types of myeloproliferative disorders in a sample of Iraqi patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study is done at the National Center of Hematology from November 2019 till March 2020 on 75 patients who were diagnosed by a specialist hematopathologist to have one subtype of myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs). Blood samples were taken from them and analyzed to get complete blood count, blood film, bone marrow aspirate, and biopsy that were analyzed for each patient. Blood samples were taken from them and analyzed in terms of blood indices, which include red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. RESULTS: The 75 patients were found to be comprising 35 chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) patients (46.7%), myelofibrosis 22 patients (29.3%), essential thrombocythemia (ET) 9 patients (12%), and polycythemia vera (PV) 9 patients (12%). In terms of male/female ratios, they were as follows: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) male-to-female ratio is 1.2, CML= 0.94, myelofibrosis= 2.14 and ET= 0.5 and PV male-to-female ratio is 2. CONCLUSIONS : MPN male-to-female ratio in Iraq, which is 1.2, CML is the most common subtype. Regarding myelofibrosis, in our study, the male-to-female ratio is 2.14, which is much higher other countries. This could be attributed to high exposure to benzene and toluene which are well known to be causative agents for myelofibrosis. Regarding ET or PV, the male-to-female ratios were compatible with other countries.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow is extremely vulnerable to damage caused by radiation therapy. Hence, bone marrow suppression is an important side effect of radiotherapy. Effective use of radiotherapy is therefore compromised by radiation-related injuries.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six Guinea-pigs were recruited for the study of which three were subjected to total body irradiation with Co60 while the other three served as controls. Bone marrow and peripheral blood samples were collected before and at days 9, 14 and 21, post irradiation. Manual and automated counts were performed for bone marrow nucleated cells and peripheral blood cells respectively.RESULTS: Declining bone marrow cellularity was evident immediately post irradiation. Mean ± SD of marrow cell counted per mm3 were 121,924±281, 87,603±772, 121,367±375 and122,750±1000 pre-irradiation and days 9, 14 and 21, postirradiation (p-values 0.10, 0.27 and 0.29 respectively). Significant drops in counts were noticed on day 9 post-irradiation for all red cell parameters (p-values <0.05), for Total White Blood Cell Count and Neutrophil count (p-values <0.05) and also on days 14 and 21 for Lymphocytes (p-values <0.05) and on day 21 for Eosinophil/Basophil/Monocytes (p-value <0.05). A significant drop in platelets counts was also noticed on day 9 (p-value <0.05) which significantly increased above pre-irradiation value on day 21.CONCLUSION: Total body irrradiation with Co60 significantly affects the bone marrow with maximum reductions in marrow nucleated cells and peripheral blood cells counts on day 9 post irradiation.

The effects of Talinum triangulare on the haematological indices of Clarias gariepinus was investigated. T. triangulare leaf powder at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0% concentrations were fed to Clarias gariepinus juveniles (n=84; 117.3 ± 1.57 g; 26.70 ± 0.26 cm) as feed additive for a period of six (6) weeks.  The packed cell volume (PCV) and Haemoglobin (Hb) concentration values, 34.67 ± 0.67%, 12.03 ± 0.26g/dl, respectively observed in the group fed with 1.0% were significantly higher (P<0.05) compare with the control group. Red blood cell counts (RBCs), white blood cell counts (WBCs), lymphocytes, MCV, MCH and MCHC recorded were marginally different (P>0.05) among the groups, were within standard for Clarias gariepinus, therefore adjudged not to indicate a negative physiological effect on the experimental fish. Blood indices values observed revealed that the varying additive levels of T. triangulare used had no negative physiological stress on the health status of the fish studied and haematological values observed were seen to be best in the group fed 1.0% T. triangulare. It could be recommended that 10g/kg of Talinum triangulare leaf powder be included in the diet of Clarias gariepinus for boosting of the animal blood and treatment of disease conditions such as anaemia.

This study aims to study the effect of gout disease on complete blood picture and biochemical parameters and some non-enzymatic antioxidants, some tracing elements and lipid peroxidation ,in outpatients with gout disease at Al-Ramadi Teaching-Hospital ,Al-Razi Hospital and the study duration from Octo.2013-to May 2014.(50) blood samples were collected from patients with age groups (30-80 years) from both sexes (28 males,22 females),a (30) blood samples (15 males,15 females) were collected from normal individuals as a control group with age groups (27-75 years). Hematological measurement showed no significant differences in size compressed blood cells, the percentages in ( 45.15 +4.99 and 46.87+6.30) % in patient and control groups respectively, hemoglobin concentrations were ( 14.04+1.66 and 14.30+1.93) g/l in patient and control groups respectively, total number of red blood cells ( 5.21+0.43 and 5.12 +0.58) 106/mm3 in patient and control groups respectively with(P?0.05) in ESR (21.06+13.47 and 13.37 +7.45) mm/hr in patient and control groups respectively with (P?0.05), the total number of WBCs were recorded (8.96+2.04 and 7.50+1.69)in patient and control groups respectively. Results showed also significant differences (P?0.05) in uric acid levels (7.42+0.76 and 5.62+0.88) mg/dl,malondialdehyde levels were recorded (4.45+0.64 and 3.21+0.86) in patient and control groups

Abstract 1. A patient has been presented whose circulating red blood cells were composed of 65-84 per cent ovalocytes, 3-11 per cent sickled cells, and some normal appearing discoid cells. 2. The red blood cell counts and the blood indices were within normal limitations. 3. The red blood cells showed an increased resistance to hypotonic saline solutions. The peripheral blood showed a daily variation in the percentage of circulating ovalocytes, from 65 per cent to 84 per cent, and in the percentage of circulating sickle cells, from 3 per cent to 11 per cent. 5. After 72 hours in fresh wet preparations the per cent of ovalocytes remained essentially unchanged from that of fresh fixed blood. 6. The percentage of sickled cells was found to be increased after 18, 24, and 72 hours in fresh wet preparations as compared to the percentage of sickled cells found in fresh fixed preparations. 7. Some of the normal appearing discoid red blood cells were observed to sickle in fresh wet preparations within 18 hours.
