Résumé Depuis les années 1970, la plupart des historiens anglophones ont travaillé sur des périodes temporelles s’étendant de cinq à cinquante ans. L’étroitesse de ce champ de vision, ce repli face aux périodes plus longues généralement étudiées jusqu’alors, ont contribué à détacher d’eux un lectorat plus large ainsi qu’à les priver de l’influence qu’ils avaient pu avoir sur le débat public. Cet article étudie les causes et les conséquences de ce repli et propose une solution à la crise de confiance et à la désaffection qu’il a créées. On y soutient qu’un retour à ce que Fernand Braudel a appelé en 1958 dans les Annales la longue durée est à la fois nécessaire et à portée de main : nécessaire si l’on veut que l’histoire retrouve sa place en tant que science sociale critique, à portée de main si l’on pense à la masse de données historiques désormais disponibles et aux nouveaux outils numériques qui permettent de les analyser.

Resumo Este artigo aborda a concepção de temporalidade plural de Fernand Braudel e, sobretudo, a longue durée como instrumento prático para a pesquisa histórica. Por meio da análise do trabalho de Erenst Labrousse, colega de Braudel, enfatiza os pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos que permeiam a prática da história serial como meio para reconstrução dessas "temporalidades estruturais". Por fim, trata da preocupação com o episódico e com o curto prazo que caracteriza a micro-história italiana como uma reação ao domínio da história serial francesa, a qual, entretanto, permanece ligada à concepção braudeliana de tempo plural. O artigo procura, desse modo, deixar explícita a relação entre a chamada "segunda fase" dos Annales de Braudel e a micro-história italiana, bem como sugerir caminhos pelos quais as concepções de temporalidade podem promover o diálogo entre abordagens historiográficas diversas.

Artikel ini dimaksudkan untuk menganalisis konsep longue durée dalam praktik penulisan sejarah. Sejak diperkenalkan oleh Fernand Braudel pada tahun 1958, ia terus menjadi bahan perdebatan dalam praktik penulisan sejarah di tingkat global. Berbagai kritik maupun apresiasi terhadap perspektif ini bisa ditemui dalam berbagai literatur tentang historiografi. Meskipun demikian, penjelasan mengenai apa itu longue duréesering kali absen dalam pembahasan, sehingga penggunaan istilah sering kali tidak seragam. Atas dasar itu, artikel ini akan membahas konteks sosial politik kelahiran longue durée. Selain itu, artikel ini juga akan membahas apa itu longue duréedan bagaimana ia dimaknai. Terkhir, artikel ini juga akan menganalisis reaksi yang muncul terhadapnya, dan semangat untuk kembali kepadanya sebagai upaya untuk mengaktualisasi kajian ilmu sosial, terutama kajian disiplin sejarah.

Das Geschichtsbild zum Mittelalter ist bei Schülerinnen und Schülern wesentlich vorgeprägt durch die allgegenwärtige Populärkultur. Es dient zumeist als Negativfolie, die die Vorstellung von der eigenen Gegenwart als überlegen und zivilisiert scheinbar bestätigt. Exemplarisch kann dieses Bild im Schulgeschichtsunterricht aufgebrochen und damit auch für andere Bereiche der Geschichte Vorarbeit geleistet werden, um übereilte historische Urteile über vermeintlich unzivilisierte oder rückständige frühere Gesellschaften zu überwinden. Ausgehend von der Beschäftigung mit der überaus dynamischen Zeit des Mittelalters kann im Schulgeschichtsunterricht vermittelt werden, dass gegenwärtige Strukturen historisch gewachsen sind. Im Sinne der „longue durée“ nach Fernand Braudel können dabei sowohl soziale als auch ökonomische Entwicklungen erfasst werden. In der Forschung wurde die Epoche des Mittelalters in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart auch immer wieder zum Spielball einer gemeinsamen Erinnerungskultur und zur Legitimation von Herrschaftsverhältnissen herangezogen. Über die Beschäftigung mit der Instrumentalisierung der Epoche zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus und der DDR, aber auch in den vergangenen Jahren unter Bezugnahme auf den Mythos Karls des Großen als „Vater Europas“ können Schülerinnen und Schüler zu Erkenntnissen über den Konstruktcharakter von Geschichte, ihrer Bedeutung als Legitimationsinstrument und als identitätsstiftendes Element gelangen.

« Il y a une crise générale des sciences de l'homme », écrit Fernand Braudel, dans un article auquel je voudrais, en partie, répondre. Que cette crise générale soit aussi directement une crise de l'histoire, nul n'en doutera un seul instant. Mais tout cela est-il si nouveau ? Cette crise n'est-elle pas permanente, n'a-t-elle pas toujours existé? Au temps de Bodin et de Montaigne, comme pour Voltaire et Mably ; elle a pareillement existé à l'époque de la grande « Methodenstreit » autour de Karl de Lamprecht ; elle existe encore lorsque Henri Berr fonde, en 1900, la novatrice Revue de Synthèse historique, plus encore lorsque Marc Bloch et Lucien Febvre, dix ans après la fin de la première guerre mondiale, fondent, en 1929, les Annales.

Résumé Cette brève contribution vise à replacer l’article de David Armitage et Jo Guldi dans un contexte historiographique élargi à l’histoire de la Chine, puisque Fernand Braudel prit garde dès l’origine de lier sa perspective de la longue durée à l’étude renouvelée des aires culturelles. En abordant les champs de l’histoire sociale et économique et, au-delà, des sciences sociales, les spécialistes de la Chine, en Europe comme aux États-Unis, déconstruisirent la trop longue durée de l’histoire chinoise en mettant en lumière son dynamisme, étouffé par ce qui n’était jusque-là qu’une « civilisation ». Ce mouvement a favorisé une heureuse spécialisation qui peut aujourd’hui s’appuyer sur des big data, construites en particulier dans l’entourage immédiat des deux auteurs.

Abstract This article engages with some of the questions raised by David Armitage and Jo Guldi’s “The Return of the longue durée: An Anglo-American Perspective” and their resonance among readers of the Annales. In particular, it challenges the authors’ classification of a variety of different historical studies of short periods of time under the rubric of “microhistory.” It also questions their argument that such studies are evidence of a “moral crisis” that supposedly dominated anglophone historiography from the cultural revolution of 1968 to the global financial crisis of 2008. Furthermore, the article contrasts the less conventional meanings that Fernand Braudel originally attributed to the longue durée with the ways that Armitage and Guldi interpret this expression. Finally, it asks how, in practice, historians are supposed to follow the authors’ invitation to move beyond specialized training and knowledge to produce sweeping new and original interpretations of millennia of human history.

Abstract Since the 1970s, most historians in the anglophone world have worked on time-scales of between five and fifty years. This narrow focus represented a retreat from the longer periods generally covered before the late twentieth century and served not only to cut them off from wider reading publics but also to deprive them of the influence on public policy and global governance they had once had. This article surveys the causes and the consequences of this retreat and proposes a solution for the crisis of confidence and of relevance it has created. A return to what Fernand Braudel classically termed the longue durée in the Annales in 1958 is now both imperative and feasible: imperative, in order to restore history’s place as a critical social science; feasible, due to the increased availability of large amounts of historical data and the digital tools necessary to analyze them.
