This study aimed to examine which genres parents are reading to children and for themselves. Furthermore, it aimed to examine mothers' and fathers' shared reading strategies for different book genres in relation to children's language and literacy development. Parents shared a narrative and an expository book with their preschool-aged children. Parents then completed measures of book enjoyment, book exposure and book genre preference. Children completed a battery of language and literacy measures tapping into expressive and receptive language, letter naming fluency, phonological awareness and narrative skills. Parents reported that they most frequently shared narrative picture books at home; however, they reported that their children enjoyed the expository book more than the narrative book in this study. Parents' book-reading strategies were related to children's language and literacy, with higher level strategies positively related and lower level strategies negatively related to children's language and literacy. This pattern was the same for the narrative and expository book. These results suggest that the most important task is to find books that motivate both parents and children to engage in and enjoy reading interactions.

Since 2005, a philanthropic organization, PJ Books, has set out to influence American Jews by reaching them in one of their most tender, intimate family moments: parents reading to children. The program uses children's books to influence Jewish families' values and practices. This chapter argues that PJ Library demonstrates the burden that American Jewish institutions place on popular culture to shape their communities. Though staff members deny that PJ Library is engaged in religious activity, the organization does, in fact, use children's books as a tool to shape American Jewish religion. It uses children's books to introduce families to or reinforce their connection with sacred rituals and Jewish customs. More broadly, PJ Library seeks to persuade American Jewish families to make Judaism an important part of their lives and to connect them, one illustrated book at a time, to networks that will help them do so.

Thousands of books are published every year both in paper form and online. For a parent or a teacher who is new to the profession, relying on the classics or well-known authors is one way to ensure the books children are reading have literary merit. Yet not all books stand the test of time, and are these traditional choices appropriate for 21st century children? With such a plethora of material now available, how can parents and teachers evaluate the material they are buying or reading to children? This chapter is not written for literacy specialists but rather for those who are keen to make informed book selection choices. It identifies key elements of quality contemporary children's books and provides guidance for their assessment.

As reading to children plays an important role in language development, primary caregivers are often encouraged to read to their children from a very young age. However, little is known about the age at which such reading should start. The linguistic skills of 104 children were assessed shortly before school entry. Their parents were asked how old their children were when they first read to them and how often they had read to their children. Almost half of the study children were read to before they were 6 months old. The age at which children were first read to was closely associated with family characteristics such as socioeconomic status, the frequency with which children were read to as preschoolers, and with children’s linguistic and cognitive competencies. The findings imply that reading books to very young children indeed contributes meaningfully to a favorable home literacy environment and supports children’s language development.

Cheng, Ardis. Simone in Australia.  Paper Bear, 2016.Once in a while you find a book that your children will not stop asking you to read to them. Meet Simone in Australia.  This delightfully illustrated book by Ardis Cheng, a local Calgarian author currently residing in Melbourne Australia - leaves nothing out. On each of the pages of Simone’s adventure with Jack, there is a new visual delight.  The story takes us through the different flora and fauna of the Australian region Jack calls home; we meet spiders in Jack's house, adventure down to the beach and enjoy the tiny fairy penguins.  The illustrations of animals of Australia including the kookaburra, echidna and wombat are a favorite page in our house.  Simone, is a delightful young girl who is visiting her friend Jack. Throughout story Jack and Simone are given the challenge of explaining similarities and differences between Jack’s home and Simone’s.  The book does an amazing job of highlighting what travel is for.  To learn about new places and people.  Often in the story, Simone will mention what she used to and while Jack teaching her about his home.  This contrast is done very well, and makes sure to never state one is better -- just that they are different. Simone in Australia is also lovely way of explaining travel to children in a manner that allows them to understand how new and different can also be exciting, challenging and fun to share with a friend.  This is a beautifully illustrated book that is great to read to children and children just starting to read themselves.
