Formal links are naturally associated with cohesion as one of the main features of discourse. Cohesion has been extensively discussed in the literature especially in terms of the mechanisms generating it, but also in terms of its equivalence in translation. As with any type of discourse, the communicative value of translated texts is enhanced by their cohesive texture. Less attention has been granted to the translation of formal links carrying additional functions though. This study examines some cohesive devices in student translations with a special focus on the translatability of ellipsis, substitution and reference when they are enriched with stylistic, sociolectal and rhetorical values. The study is based on a translational learner corpus consisting of Romanian graduate students’ translations of a short story from English into Romanian. The methodology for assessing and analyzing the learner corpus is of both quantitative and qualitative nature and employs simplification, explicitation and neutralization. The conclusions comprise insights into some problematic areas in the trainees’ translations, as well as observations related to contrastive aspects of cohesive devices between English and Romanian. A teaching methodology is subsequently derived from the findings in an attempt to offer a more comprehensive approach to the pedagogy of translating cohesive devices with stylistic load.

Abstract The present study aims to explore the applicability of automatic analysis to L2-Korean learner corpora, with a special focus on learners’ use of a clause-level construction. For this purpose, we investigate L1-Mandarin L2-Korean learners’ written production of two passive construction types in Korean – suffixal and periphrastic – by devising a pattern-extraction process through NLP techniques. We focus on reporting how the passive constructions are identified and extracted from learner writing automatically, given language-specific features involving the passive. A total of 72 essays were analysed by adapting an existing pipeline (developed by Shin, forthcoming), with enhanced tokenisation and annotation through manual revision of the data. Results showed that our automatic pattern-finder identified more instances than manual extraction for the suffixal passive and yielded a perfect match with manual extraction for the periphrastic passive. Implications of the findings are discussed in regard to strengths and drawbacks of the automatic analysis of learner writing, with suggestions for improving currently available tools for learner corpus research in Korean.

This study aims to analyze the use of cohesive devices and the chain interaction of cohesive devices to achieve coherence in argumentative essays of Universitas Negeri Semarang graduate students.  This study employed descriptive qualitative research design. It focused on cohesion and coherence analysis of students’ writing. The findings of the study showed that all of the types of cohesive devices such as reference, substitution, ellipsis, and reiteration were found in the students’ essays. These cohesive devices provide the coherence of the text through their semantic relation or bound which create the two cohesive chains; identity chains and similarity chains. The interaction between both chains can give explicit signals to guide readers towards the intended interpretation of the text. The result of this chain interaction is known as cohesive harmony. Most of students’ essays achieve coherence because the total tokens of the students’ essays enter more than 50% of chain interaction. Unfortunately, the students overuse certain types of cohesive devices such as repetition in creating the chains.

Introduction: Electronic exams have been used at Semmelweis University within Health Care Informatics courses since 2006. The statistical analysis of the electronic exam sheets enabled the authors to assess the reliability of examinations, as well as recommend important measures to increase the quality and efficiency of knowledge transfer. Aim: The main objective of the study was to propose an optimal teaching methodology with a special focus on electronic exams, based on the statistical analysis of databases of electronic exams recorded at Health Care Informatics courses of Semmelweis University. Method: All data were analysed with statistical methods at the level of individual questions as well as exam results of each student (2801 medical students have undertaken 4933 electronic exams since 2006). Results were evaluated based on teaching methodology criteria. Results: There was a significantly increased tendency in grades obtained at individual exams. The authors identified exam questions that are needed to be modified or even ignored, because they failed to correlate with the knowledge measurement of the students. Conclusions: Statistical analysis of exam results proved to be a useful tool to assess methodology of teaching, knowledge transfer, and their practical implications. It is essential to monitor continuously exam results, this may exert a significant impact on the improvement of the quality and efficiency of knowledge transfer processes. Orv. Integration and islamisation (INI) programmes for undergraduate medical students have been practiced, reviewed and published in many journals. However, there is only a dearth of study on the implementation of such a programme for postgraduate clinical students. Hence, there is a need to examine such a programme because of the different learning environment and characteristic of the students. The aim of this paper is to examine the existing clinical postgraduate programme at IIUM and attempts to improve the INI curriculum. Method: The study employs an analytical method and important factors for the development of the curriculum are analysed to come out with the objective, content, teaching methodology and assessment method suitable for the program. Result: The study identified the important factors that determine the curriculum to be the needs of National Health Service, the mission of the university, the requirement of the professional body and characteristic of the students. The study proposes that the objective of the program is to produce holistic orthopaedic surgeons who understand the belief of Muslim patients and is able to facilitate them in their ibadah and daily life as a Muslims. This is achieved through offering a course which consists of 4 main subjects on the principles of shariah which include the element of Islamic worldview, fiqh ibadah, fiqh muamalah and Islamic moral values with emphasis on issues related to medicine. The teaching method proposed is having regular seminars which consist of presentations and discussion of important concept in Islamic fiqh and followed by case study on fiqh issues related to Medicine. Finally, the students should be assessed from the case write up which they are required to submit before they can sit for the final professional exam. Conclusion: This improved program enables students to complete their study without compromising their duties to provide services at their respective hospitals.

PROMOTING THE TEACHER EDUCATION OF POST-GRADUATE STUDENTS IN CHEMISTRY: A CASE STUDY IN THE DISCIPLINE OF INTERNSHIP TEACHING. The objective of this work was to identify evidences related to the teacher knowledge and professional identity characteristics developed by post-graduate students in Chemistry during a discipline of Teaching Internship and Teaching Methodology in Chemistry from a Federal University. The activities carried out were leaned on the discussion of chemistry teaching aspects, planning, developing and reflection about teaching experiences. The teacher education process was analyzed by students themselves by means of metacognitive reports that was employed as data research and examined using content analysis to investigate their teacher knowledge development. The results pointed out the appropriation as much teacher knowledges as aspects of teacher professional identities: search for a flexible and singular didactic-pedagogical profile; belief in constant training/ qualification; difficulties and social obligation of the profession. Such results show that the activities proposed can be useful and adaptable to the reality of each post-graduate program in Chemistry. The approach is an opportunity and an incentive for post-graduate tudents to seek other teaching qualifications during the journey to become a university professor. Despite having contributed to teacher development, just a discipline is not enough to encompass the complexity of this process.

With the aim of investigating the lexical cohesive devices, a short story from the American literature; namely, “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe, is taken as the data of study. The study adopts the framework of Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) by which two major categories of lexical cohesion; reiteration and collocation, are examined. To make the investigation possible, a full explanation of the lexical cohesive devices in both English and Arabic is presented to have a vivid image of the differences and similarities between them and to discuss their possible effect on translation. The results obtained reveal that lexical cohesion in Poe’s short story is founded on repetition, synonymy and collocation but the inadequate command of these devices by the translator leads to the distortion of translation
