In the framework of asset management, the effectiveness of an integrated process that manages reliability and maintenance should be adequately and timely evaluated based on a thorough analysis of a series of contributing factors, which should respond entirely to the result of maintenance activities on the performance of assets that make up the production process. According to the above, then arises the motivation for the design and application of tools to determine the effectiveness of such activities in asset management, understanding the latter as a holistic process that involves a diversity of functions and areas within an organization

Abstract: The objective of this article is to use a systematic review of the literature to answer how the maintenance sector considers the occupational safety and health (OSH) criteria, what impacts safety has on maintenance activities, which are the most significant branches of activities in this relationship, and which phases and types of maintenance are more prone to be influenced by OSH. The articles for these studies were selected through the Capes Portal, limited to the period between 2010 to 2015. Articles selected from the Brazilian Congresses on Asset Management and Maintenance in the period from 2013 to 2015 were also used. 38 articles were selected in total for the systematic review of the literature. The results were summarized through conceptual maps and revealed that there are fundamental relationships between OSH, Maintenance and Asset Management and that maintenance has a central role to play in these relationships. It is also concluded that the impacts of safety on the maintenance activities involve all stages of the process and that the maintenance sector considers the OSH criteria as a function of the safety of the persons performing the maintenance and operating the equipment. The contributions include a discussion on the importance of maintenance and safety according to different organizational cultures, the elements considered in management practices, maintenance strategies and safety criteria.

Thermal insulation material is an important component to reduce the environmental impact of buildings through the reduction of energy consumption in the operation phase. However, the material itself has embodied environmental impacts for the value it provides. Eco-efficiency is a method that quantifies relation between the environmental performance and the created value of a product system. This study investigated contributing factors of the eco-efficiency of thermal insulation materials to support decision making of material manufacturers. For the improvement of eco-efficiency, the assessment was made in two scopes: investigating the contributing factors of impact caused at production processes; and thermal performance through thermo-physical properties. For quantifying environmental impacts, cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) of each materials were made. The life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) indicators used were ReCiPe H/A and global warming potential (GWP100a). For the assessment of production process, the inventories of the materials were assigned to six categories: heat, chemicals, electricity, transportation, raw materials and wastes. Among the assessed materials, contribution of electricity and heat within the production process was large for foam glass which had the highest potential to improve the eco-efficiency which was by factor 1.72. The analysis on relation between thermo-physical properties and eco-efficiency based on product data of the materials highlighted the importance of density as an indicator upon development and use. Althoughdensity often gains less attention,the finding suggested the effectiveness of improving the efficiency by having lower density without compensating the performance of the materials.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the readiness of selected Slovenian companies to assimilate the complexities of Industry 4.0 requirements into their asset management practice, namely for the particular case of the predictive maintenance function. The survey was conducted to capture the extent to which companies address new technologies as well as to identify the current and future orientation towards their adoption in predictive maintenance activities. The results suggest that companies are aware of the benefits that can be attained with Industry 4.0 solutions. However, they still lack of clear vison and an implementation roadmap such solutions. Moreover, the majority of the companies in the sample are still in the early stages of predictive maintenance strategy maturity. Taking a wider perspective one can highlight the need to adopt organization-wide asset management approach to be able to effectively manage the transition towards digitalization by means of creating higher value for the organization.

Clean water distribution machines are very important for local drinking water companies to be able to supply clean water to customers. The need for water continues to increase, so an analysis is needed to determine the decline in engine pump performance in the production process. Maintenance activities need to be carried out to maintain the reliability (realiability) of the machine so that it can operate properly. Therefore, a good strategy is needed to maintain the continuity of the production process. The purpose of this research is to measure the performance of the water distribution pump machine / equipment associated with the low level of clean water production, to identify the losses experienced by the company. The Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) value obtained before repairs were carried out in November 2019 for Lapi I was 69.38% and Lapi II was 69. 75% while in December 2019 for Lapi I it was 74.02% and Lapi II was 73.65% still below the JIPM standard, namely ≥85%. From the results of the six big losses, the clean water distribution pump machine as a whole still needs evaluation to make improvements in increasing effectiveness and productivity, especially in the problem of redeuced speed losses so that suggestions can be made to improve the clean water distribution machine. After repairs in January 2020 for Lapi I was 87.90% and Lapi II was 87.26% while in February 2020 for Lapi I it was 90.34% and Lapi II was 85.81%. Abstract The paper presents a case study of the practical use of BOST surveys to identify problems that are the most important in production process. The research object is company from electrical industry. It was made the identification and of areas geneating problems from the second Toyota’s management principle point of view. Analysis of the research results was presented in the form of tables, histograms, radar chart and some statistical tools. Some production workers of the company with the help of BOST questionnaire survey showed, which factors are the most important. The aim of the analysis is to present which factors are the most important by building the significance sequences of obtained results. The results obtained for the type of small and medium-sized enterprises overlap with the results of tests verified in other enterprises.

The monitoring of machinery condition, performance, and maintenance activities continues to be vital to the effective management of marine assets. Identifying key data, developing a data collection protocol, and analyzing the data are key to effective management. Planning for these activities should rely on risk and reliability techniques. Integrating data collection with the vessel’s or asset’s control and monitoring systems can reduce crew burden and simplify an often complex puzzle of qualifying and analyzing condition and performance data into a standardized process for maintenance planning and decision making related to asset operations. The information gathered from these processes can create a knowledge loop that, when implemented in an enterprise asset management (EAM) strategy, can improve current operational execution and influence the next generation of marine asset designs. Classification societies can apply this information for effective surveys and Rules improvement.

Within aerospace and defence sectors, maintaining asset availability during operational service has become more important than quality of service throughout the system life cycle. This requires organisations to establish cost effective strategies to manage uncertainties within their value led services e.g. maintenance activities. In large organizations, it is not always apparent whose decision affects the outcome the most. Often, accountability moves away from the designated organization personnel in unforeseen ways, and depending on the decisions of individual decision makers, the structure of the organization, or unregulated operating procedures may change. This can have far more effect on the overall reliability leading to inadequate troubleshooting, repeated down-time and reduced availability. This chapter focuses on discussing the No Fault Found problems in aviation and highlights the drivers that influence its decision making process. It further articulates the contents of tacit knowledge and discusses the knowledge gaps with current management policies.

Elevated summer temperatures are a disrupting factor on the rail network. Due to the risk of a track buckling under thermal expansion forces, geometry maintenance must be delayed during heatwaves, leading to an overall decreased network availability and reliability. Track asset management support tools are used to plan and schedule a variety of maintenance activities, with tamping and stoneblowing being the primary activities for geometry maintenance. No management tools seen in the literature consider the influences of weather on the scheduling and delivery of maintenance. This paper describes a Petri net modelling approach to railway track asset management. This is demonstrated to be a highly flexible method able to capture the complexities of degradation, inspection, and maintenance, and predict the evolution of track geometry quality over time. Different maintenance strategies are tested, varying the degradation thresholds, inspection intervals, policy decisions, and maintenance response times. Excessively hot weather is introduced as an inhibiting factor for all maintenance activities, resulting in extended periods where interventions are delayed. Simulation results show that frequent inspection and timely maintenance scheduling strategies could be followed to attain a highly performing and resilient track system. This asset management support tool could be added to the suite used by the rail industry, providing guidance on maintenance policy through a summer season where heatwave disruptions are expected.

For the first time, a steady state computational simulation for the production of biodiesel from meat processing dissolved air flotation sludge via an integrated process of in-situ hydrolysis and esterification technologies has been investigated. Important thermophysical properties of the intrinsic lipids of dissolved air flotation sludge were estimated using chemical constituent fragment methods. The environmental performance and the economic performance of the biodiesel production process were assessed via the estimation of the net energy ratio (NER) and the unit production cost, respectively. Since electrical energy requirements may be satisfied via either non-renewable (case A) or renewable sources (case B), the NER was determined for both scenarios. To enhance the robustness of the study results, uncertainties in the NER and the unit cost of the biodiesel production process due to the variability of the underlying study assumptions were also assessed. Uncertainty analysis indicated that the likely range of the NER for the biodiesel production process for cases A and B are 1.76 to 3.32 and 1.82 to 3.36, respectively, at 95% probability. Uncertainty analysis also showed that the likely range of the unit production cost for biodiesel is $US0.41/kg-biodiesel to $US0.71/kg-biodiesel at 95% probability. The results that were obtained in this study therefore provide evidence of both the environmental sustainability and the economic viability of biodiesel production from dissolved air flotation sludge via the proposed integrated process of in-situ hydrolysis and esterification.
