The editorial panel chose the topic of geometry for a focus issue because we wanted to promote an increase in the attention given to geometry and measurement for all students in all grades. We identify with the observation by Marjorie Senechal in her essay “Shape,” in which she notes that “the role of geometry is a perennial issue in mathematics education at all levels from elementary school to graduate school.” As she discusses some of these issues, she observes that “the teaching of geometry is defended on the grounds that it serves external purposes, rather than on the importance of the subject in its own right” (Senechal 1990).

Scientific literature offers extensive examples of the role of mathematics education in the development of personality and intelligence as well as its application in everyday life and professional activities. Furthermore, the attitude towards the role of mathematical knowledge in the labour market is widely discussed in the society. In order to reflect the views of respondents on the issues of mathematics education and the potential values of mathematics, the survey was carried out. The research data was analysed considering the respondents` education speciality, gender, age and mathematics learning experience. Study results show that mathematics is widely used in everyday life as well as in professional activities, and gives advantage in the labour market. It is difficult to learn mathematics but it is highly worthy. Thus the subject of mathematics is becoming a crucial instrument for promoting an all-round education and personal development. Therefore, many higher education courses have to be mathematics-intensive, and students need to have a high level of competence in the subject to promote person’s resilience.

ABSTRACTIn the process of learning in schools, especially elementary schools (SD), teachers have a difficult task because in elementary school students experience many developments besides physical development. Therefore the teacher must be a good facilitator for students in their learning. Many students have difficulty learning at school, especially elementary school students. Of course the role of parents is very important to guide and teach their children well at home. Many obstacles faced by parents in guiding, directing especially teaching their children if there are difficulties in learning at home. Many parents who complain because it is not optimal in guiding and directing especially teaching their children in learning at home. That is because most of his parents earn a living as farmers and they have to work in the fields. They realize that it is not optimal to teach their children if they have difficulty learning at home. What power do they also experience limited costs to include their children in tutoring institutions outside school hours to overcome learning difficulties. This will result in a child's learning motivation decreases because the child can not overcome the difficulties in learning. Children will be lazy to learn, they think the lesson is difficult and does not need to be learned. Children's learning motivation can decrease due to lack of guidance and direction from parents when learning at home. There needs to be assistance in assisting tutoring at home for elementary school children to foster student motivation. This was carried out as an effort to help parents in guiding and teaching their children if anyone had difficulty learning at home. This activity was carried out in Dusun Buruan Tampaksiring. The method used in this activity is the lecture and discussion method. The success of this activity can be seen from the enthusiasm and enthusiasm of students in participating in tutoring activities. In addition, students are also active in answering questions related to the material provided and they are also passionate about learning and discussing. They did not hesitate to ask if they did not understand the subject matter. The implementation of these community service activities went smoothly without significant obstacles. Keywords: tutoring assistance; motivation to learn.

Every one of my scholarly/literary activities is outside literary studies as such. Yet to a varying degree all that I do is the subject of the amoeboid activities of the field. I also have, in principle, no vested interest in the flow of students into your departments [this was a lecture to an audience in comparative literature], nor do I have to worry about jobs for them, nor the level of remuneration of your sluggers and sometime pinch hitters. It seems to me that given this practical disinterest (reading Burke and Kant) I am ideally situated to make aesthetic judgments if not prognoses of the future of literary studies. Which is the reason, I suppose, that I was asked to do so. But first let me count the ways in which I am marginal. First of all, I am a chemist, of the theoretical subspecies. I have done some good science, even shaped the way that chemists think of the motion of electrons in molecules, and how the electrons determine the shape and reactions of those persistent groupings of atoms we’ve learned to see without seeing. My and my collaborators’ work is divulged, some of my colleagues would say preached, in over 450 scientific articles (our stock in trade, rather than books). Such “texts” have become the subject of a burgeoning field of literary studies of science. But no one would bother with my texts; they are individually unimportant (though what they collectively teach is of value; I think of my articles as chapters in a serialized text, but please don’t tell the editors of the journals in which I publish). And perhaps when I write science I am too self-conscious of the central problem of representation for me to play the role of an innocent native (or his artifacts) awaiting the sage pseudo-anthropo/ sociological investigation of the way I construct knowledge. Also the cognitive, intrascientific background needed to assess my papers is moderately formidable; there is a reason why chemists spend five years in graduate school .

Escola. Sociedade brasileira. From racism in school to a school against the racism: considerations about the Brazilian sceneABSTRACTThis article has by aim to present comprehensions about the way racism exposed and manifest em speeches and individual behaviors in Brazilian society contributes to the denial of humanity and the obliteration of some persons by their ethnic recognition, in considering the essential role of the school in this matter struggling any kind of prejudice and discrimination, mostly producing actions with substantial effectiveness mainly in the Elementary School. To achieve that objective, it was made use as methodology the research of qualitative type and exploratory basis with bibliographic procedure of data, accessing texts about the subject in books or digital media. The result of the discussion shows that it is needed the strengthening of pedagogic practices and actions of conscientization to face this chronic problem still existent in the Brazilian society, in which some individuals have insisted in the denial of the racism and in the reality of some kind of racial democracy. Considering by conclusion that it is through the school, assuming its social goal, the consolidation of educational and strength policies will be realized in the process of building persons opened to the dialogue but not to the conflict who only feeds the abyss of ignorance that it is a strong attribute of a society that has sadly revealed itself, at least some individuals, unable to face its major dilemmas. Keywords: Racism. Elementary School. Brazilian Society. Elementary school (SD) Of Muhammadiyah Demangan Yogyakarta is featured SD. It is seen from the miraculous achievements of students both at provincial and national levels, adequate infrastructure, a spirit of community to send their children in elementary school. Accordingly, of course, can not be separated from the role of teachers as educators and counselors to provide services in the classroom and outside the classroom. Muhammadiyah elementary schools including one school are designated by the ministry of religion (MORA) to implement the curriculum by 2013. Therefore it is necessary to do research on the implementation of the scientific approach in science (IPA) learning curriculum in 2013. Type of research is qualitative lookups. As for the subject of this research is that teachers and students in the fourth grade (IV) of Muhammadiyah elementary school Demengan Yogyakarta. data collection by interview, documentation and observation. the process of data analysis, namely: examining the data, data reduction, and data presentation. he results of this research : (1) teachers in SD Muhammadiyah alreadyunderstand and know the theory of scientific approach, steps in learning. As for the understanding of the scientific approach according to the fourth grade (IV) of Muhammadiyah elementary school teachers, Mr Kastowo "approach that starts from the observation first, continue to question, then the experiment, then summed and later would know that better results". (2) scientific approach in SD Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta new Demengan already implemented, but not perfect, because in their implementation more teachers using students' understanding and not exposed to the medium of learning. (3) As for the obstacles faced by teachers in the application of scientific approaches, namely, first a very short time per sub-theme. Both enormous costs required to confront instructional media. Third when teachers find students who are less active during learning.

Many reasons have been given for the inclusion of more geometry in the lower grades. Certainly, geometry is an important subject in its own right, and as certainly, it is un realistic to postpone the study of geometry until it can be approached in a systematic and rigorous way. (Precision and rigor can best be appreciated when we understand what we are being precise and rigorous about.) lt is also true that geometry is encountered in everyday life, and that children do find the subject interesting. What has not often been pointed out is that geometry can extend and enrich the study of arithmetic.

The role of top-down processing on the horizontal-vertical line length illusion was examined by means of an ambiguous room with dual visual verticals. In one of the test conditions, the subjects were cued to one of the two verticals and were instructed to cognitively reassign the apparent vertical to the cued orientation. When they have mentally adjusted their perception, two lines in a plus sign configuration appeared and the subjects had to evaluate which line was longer. The results showed that the line length appeared longer when it was aligned with the direction of the vertical currently perceived by the subject. This study provides a demonstration that top-down processing influences lower level visual processing mechanisms. In another test condition, the subjects had all perceptual cues available and the influence was even stronger.
