SINCE 1950 every young hopeful future mathematician in a secondary school in Czechoslovakia, or even in elementary school, looks forward to the various rounds of the annual mathematical olympiad. He has hopes for valuable prizes (mostly books on mathematics)- but even more to the sheer glory of recognition (in the form of certificates) on a local, regional, or national level. If he is in the last year of a secondary school, he may even reach the International Olympiad conducted annually (since 1959) by the East European countries.

The aim of this paper is to elabourate the youth on the labour market in selected South-East European countries with special emphaisis on Macedonia and particular reference to their present state. The analysis of Macedonian youth employment is accomplished with their educational and economic structure. The situation of the global youth employment remains unstable. Problems of long job progression and a lack of stable employment for youth exist almost all around the world. As a part of the labour force, young people can significantly contribute for increasing the economic development of the country with their knowledge and abilities. Methods of analyses and synthesis, deduction and induction, as well as descriptive statistics and comparison methods will be implemented in this research. The situation of young people on the labour market in Macedonia is illustrated by paralleling with labour market indicators at national level, as well as with South-East European countries. Recent researches show that many youth in the SEE region are not active in the labour market and Macedonian youngsters aged between 15 and 24 years old are more likely to be unemployed compared to the other age groups. Labour market in Macedonia is characterized by a relatively low activity of youth. The youth activity rate in Macedonia is lower than the European Union and the average activity rate in Western Balkan countries.

In Great Britain there are two associations, each publishing its own journal, that are dedicated solely to the teaching of mathematics at the secondary school level. In this issue we report on one of these associations and its publications; the other association will be reported on in a subsequent issue.

There arc certain types of binary relations which are of eminent importance for all parts of mathematics, including the elementary mathematics of secondary school. These are: order relations, equivalencerelations and functions. Pupils meet them at every stage of the curriculum.

Background Although patient and carer involvement in research is well-developed in many countries, this area has been largely overlooked in South-East European countries. Aims To explore experiences of patients participating in newly set up lived experience advisory panels (LEAPs) within a European Commission funded, large-scale, multi-country mental health research project that focused on improving treatment of individuals with psychosis. Method Twenty-one mental health patients were individually interviewed across five countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. Topic guides covered the experience of participating in LEAPs and their sustainability. Data were analysed by framework analysis. Results Seven themes were identified about participating in LEAPs: predominantly positive evaluation, high levels of participant motivation, therapeutic benefits for participants, few challenges, various future perspectives, positive appraisal of the research project and mixed reflections on mental healthcare. Overall, patients’ experiences were positive and enabled them to feel empowered. Patients expressed interest in remaining involved in advisory panels. Additionally, they felt that they could potentially contribute to the work of non-government organisations. Conclusions This study is among the few studies exploring patient participation in research projects, and the first such study conducted in South-East European countries. Patients are highly motivated for this engagement, which has the potential to empower them to take on new social roles. Significant efforts at the national level are needed in each country, to make patient involvement in research standard practice.

In 1958, the structure of the Danish school system was changed, and in connection with this the curricula for each subject at all school levels were revised. This provided an opportunity to create a mathematics curriculum which reflects the trends reported in recent international discussions on the problem of modernization of mathematics teaching. This newly created curriculum is now being used in grades 8 to 11, and next year will go into operation in grade 12, the last secondary school year.
