Affiliation is looking up! Reports from groups all over the country indicate great activity in the direction of the establishment of well organized state groups of teachers of mathematics. The numerous letters received show a definite and active interest on the part of leaders to effect sound and working organizations. I have seen copies of constitutions of newly organized groups and revised constitutions of older groups.

Renewals of affiliation should have been in by December 1. By March 1 many new affiliations will be completed. Each of these groups will send one delegate to the Delegate Assembly in Chicago next April. Questionnaires on affiliation which have been sent to affiliated groups, to Board members, and to state representatives should be in by now.

The first, of this series of articles appeared in the October issue of The Mathematics Teacher, The situation of affiliation was briefly summarized in that article, the need for a more effective type of affiliation was shown, announcement of the Delegate Assembly at the 1950 Chicago convention was made, groups which have been affiliated with the National Council were asked to renew their affiliation by December 1, and new affiliations were invited.

This is the third in this series of articles. I shall assume that you have read the articles on affiliation in the October and November issues. As the Chairman of Affiliated Groups, appointed by the Board of Directors on March 30 of this year, I have been requested to present recommendations on reorganization of affiliation to the Board at the Chicago meeting next April. It is our desire that these recommendations come from the groups themselves. We hope to accomplish this through the means of the questionnaire that I sent out to affiliated groups in September and through the Delegate Assembly. Remember, if affiliation of your group is completed by March 1, 1950, you are entitled to send one delegate to the Delegate Assembly in Chicago next April.

By the time this article appears, the Chicago convention will be over and the first meeting of the Delegate Assembly will have put added vigor into affiliation matters. The effectiveness of the work of this assembly will depend upon how well their decisions are carried out cooperatively by the affiliated groups and the National Council. We hope that the delegates will make known to their respective groups as soon as possible, what transpired at this delegate assembly meeting. We trust that the accomplishments of this assembly will prove to be definitely helpful and inspirational to all groups.

Better Than

The school year is about over. We have had another very successful year for the National Council. Much progress has been made. We have been blessed with capable and untiring leadership. Conventions have been better than ever, more numerous and more scattered. Our memberships have been steadily increasing. New activities have been started, among these being the Delegate Assembly which had its initial meeting in Chicago in April. Looking back over these recent accomplishments gives us encouragement to go on and makes us anxious to be a part of future developments.
