Certain tendencies which have long been operating in our schools have by their cumulative effect brought about a change in the ninth grade school population which has made classification into ability groups and other devices for adjusting instruction to the varying needs of the individual pupil more important than ever before.

Muscle force is due to the cumulative effect of repetitively contracting motor units (MUs). To simulate the contribution of each MU to whole muscle force, an approach implemented in a novel computer program is proposed. The individual contraction of an MU (the twitch) is modeled by a 6-parameter analytical function previously proposed; the force of one MU is a sum of its contractions due to an applied stimulation pattern, and the muscle force is the sum of the active MUs. The number of MUs, the number of slow, fast-fatigue-resistant, and fast-fatigable MUs, and their six parameters as well as a file with stimulation patterns for each MU are inputs for the developed software. Different muscles and different firing patterns can be simulated changing the input data. The functionality of the program is illustrated with a model consisting of 30 MUs of rat medial gastrocnemius muscle. The twitches of these MUs were experimentally measured and modeled. The forces of the MUs and of the whole muscle were simulated using different stimulation patterns that included different regular, irregular, synchronous, and asynchronous firing patterns of MUs. The size principle of MUs for recruitment and derecruitment was also demonstrated using different stimulation paradigms.

This paper is a report of the work of a committee selected last year by Dr. Baker of the Psychological Clinic of the Detroit Board of Education to solve one of the school's most pressing problems, that is, adjusting instructional needs to the slow, average, and fast sections, called “ability” groups that were organized or were to be organized in accordance with the resolutions of the High School principals in our city.

Many school administrators recognize the importance and value of guidance services to the individual. However, relatively few pupils to date have had the opportunity to reap the values of a guidance program.

AbstractThis article highlights the challenges to the operation of domestic courts as agents of development of the laws of armed conflict and particularly of the law on the conduct of hostilities. The first part of the article concerns the spillover from various branches of the laws of armed conflict to the law regarding the conduct of hostilities. The second part of the article addresses the structural constraints on domestic courts in deciding issues relating to the laws of armed conflict, focusing on the conflict between their role as guardians of national interests and their judicial commitment to protecting the individual. The cumulative effect of these characteristics of domestic litigation suggests that the laws of armed conflict, and particularly the law on the conduct of hostilities, are not necessarily well served by development through domestic jurisprudence.

Abstract: The most complex language skills are writing skills. Said to be complex, because writing skills require writers to be able to compile and organize the contents of writing and pour ideas, feelings, in the form of written language for the purpose of informing, convincing and entertaining readers. This study aims to describe the ability to make flow map concepts from fiction and non-fiction books. This type of research is a quantitative descriptive study. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII with 33 people. Data collection methods used in this study are, observation methods, task methods, and documentation methods. Data analysis techniques used the Benchmark Reference Assessment (PAP) formula by determining individual and group abilities. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded the ability to make flow map concepts from fiction and nonfiction books for class VIII students that the individual abilities of students namely, 1) High-ability groups of 31 students (94%), capable groups moderate 2 students (6%), and low-ability groups are absent (0%). 2) The ability of a student group or Grade Point Average (GPA) with a value of 80.78 is in the high category with a score range of 70.5-89.

This article discusses a recent Canadian entry to the accretion of legal texts which question, to various degrees, law’s anthropocentrism: the dissenting judgment of the Alberta Court of Appeal in Reece v. Edmonton (City of). Written by Chief Justice Catherine Fraser, the 162-paragraph dissent stands out in the Canadian landscape (and is impressive even in the international scene) given the existing Canadian law addressing animal issues that either regulate animals as objects and/or subordinate animal interests to human or corporate ones. This article argues that the dissent in Reece departs from the standard legal instrumentalist view of animals by providing a non-anthropocentric analysis of the animal interests at stake. The decision thus provides a new way of thinking about animals when compared to the existing Canadian jurisprudence. The dissent’s departure from the traditional anthropocentric legal view of animals is seen in three main ways: (1) the level of importance it assigns to the animal interest legally at issue by connecting it to the rule of law; (2) the respect it affords to critiques of animals’ current legal status (including the animal rights critique seeking to abolish the property status of animals and the default subordination of animal interests to human or corporate ones); and (3) the empathy and respect it gives to the individual animal at the heart of the legal dispute by recognizing her as a sentient and vulnerable being whose subjectivity matters. The cumulative effect is a judgment that not only provides the most sophisticated Canadian judicial analysis to date of the law’s relationship to animals, but impugns the traditional anthropocentric paradigm through which the law minimally responds to (some) animal suffering.
