The desiccation tolerance presented by orthodox species is a characteristic that allows the loss of water keeping the seed viable. However, the reduction of the moisture content by drying, has a critical limit, and a loss beyond this limit results in a reduction in the physiological quality of the seeds, TBIO Sossego cultivar. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological changes resulting from the reduction of moisture percentage in the artificial drying process of wheat seeds. The seeds used were of the cultivar TBIO Sossego with initial water content of 14.7%. The seeds were dried at 40 ± 2 °C until reaching 12, 10 and 8% moisture. The evaluated variables were germination, seedling length, electrical conductivity, field emergence, shoot length and root length. Drying of wheat seeds can be performed up to 8% moisture without affecting the physiological quality of the seeds.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency and rapidity of the Pettenkofer and Titulation methods in the determination of respiratory activity and its relation with the vigor of habanero pepper seeds. For this, six lots of habanero pepper seeds were evaluated for respiratory activity, through Pettenkofer and Titulation physicochemical methods, and for physiological quality via tests of germination, first germination count, germination speed index, emergence, initial stand, emergence speed index and electrical conductivity. Biochemical analyzes were also carried out using the electrophoresis of the esterase (EC 3.1.1.1.) and alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.2.), and the quantification of the endo-β-mannanase enzyme (EC 3.2.1.78). The tests of physiological quality and the respiratory activity of the seeds allowed the classification of the habanero pepper seed lots at different vigor levels. There was a correlation between the respiratory activity with the tests used to evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds and with the endo-β-mannanase enzyme. It is concluded that the Pettenkofer and Titulation methods are promising for the evaluation of the deterioration level and the discrimination of lots of habanero pepper seeds with different vigor levels.

Abstract: The high quality is a factor that must be assured in a corn seed production system. In order to achieve this, seeds are harvested with high moisture content, and then artificially dried. However, the costs of this operation are high and may reduce the profits. The objective of the present study was to evaluate, through the physiological quality, the possibility of using intermittence periods for drying corn seeds on the cob in a stationary system. The seeds were harvested on the cob, close to the physiological maturity stage, with an average moisture content of 35%. The treatments consisted of four periods of intermittence (3, 6 and 9 hours) and one period without intermittence. The seeds were stored for six months. To evaluate the physiological quality of the seeds, germination, first germination, electrical conductivity, and the cold tests were performed. The experimental design was completely randomized, in split plots. In a stationary drying system, periods of intermittence of up to 6 hours per day helped to preserve the physiological quality of the corn seeds. The use of intermittence periods in the drying process provides corn seeds with higher physiological quality and greater storage potential, in comparison with the continuous drying.

This work aimed to study the drying of ryegrass seeds (Lolium multiflorum L.) in fixed bed dryer with parallel air flow. The study consisted of physical and physiological characterization of seeds, seed rewetting, study the desorption isotherms of rewetted seeds and the drying process  of the rewetted seeds under the following conditions: temperature from 40 to 60 ° C, air velocity 1.0 and 2.0 m/s and the height of the tray 0.005 and 0.01 m. The experimental data showed that the drying conditions applied to the seeds can significantly influence the moisture content and the physiological quality of the final product.

The value of coffee presents a significant increase influenced by the improvement of the beans quality, so that a coffee made by beans with an inferior quality has a lower acceptance in the market and a reduction in therms of commercialization value. The different time of fermentation of the coffee in water can give rise to different beverage and physiological quality of its seeds, and may interfere in its commercialization value and in the production of seedlings in nurseries. The target of this study was to identify the best time of fermentation of the beans and seeds of Arabic coffee in the region of Mutum-MG, aiming to obtain a better quality of the drink and a better physiological quality of the seeds. The experimental design was completely randomized with seven treatments, 0, 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 hours of fermentation in water. Four replicates per treatment were used. Each repetition consisted in ten liters of coffee. The samples were submitted to a drying process in covered suspended terrarium until reaching 12% moisture. The evaluations consisted in the realization of these sensorial analysis (AS); % water content (%U); electrical conductivity (EC); first germination count (FCG); percentage of germination (%G); total fresh mass (TFM); total dry mass (TDM) and radicle length (RL). The 18 hours fermentation time provided a better quality of coffee drink obtaining a score of 84 points and also resulted in a higher physiological quality of the seeds. Excess fermentation impaired the quality of the drink and physiological quality.

Desiccation tolerance in seeds depends on the species, development stage and drying conditions, especially the water removal rate. Coffea seeds are considered of intermediate performance, because they tolerate relative dehydration compared to orthodox seeds and are sensitive to low temperatures. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of different drying rates on the viability and storability of Coffea canephora seeds. A complete randomized experimental design was used, in a factorial 3 x 5 x 2 design, with three drying rates (fast, intermediate and slow), five final mean water contents after drying (51, 42, 33, 22 and 15 %) and two storage temperatures (10 and 20°C). The germination and seed vigor assessments, using radicle protrusion, cotyledon leaf opening, seedling emergence and emergence speed index, were performed shortly after drying and after two and four months storage. It was observed that with reduction in the water content there was reduction in the germination values and seed vigor, for all the drying rates. The greatest reductions in physiological quality occurred when the seeds were dried quickly and the best results were obtained at the intermediate drying rate. There was an effect of drying rate and storage temperature on the physiological quality of the seeds, and lower germination and vigor values were observed in seeds with lower water content stored at 20°C. C. canephora seeds were tolerant to desiccation down to 15 % water content and can be stored for four months at 10°C. A temperature of 20ºC can be used to store C. canephora seeds, as long as the water content is not reduced to values below 22 % water content.

The aim of this work was to correlate macronutrient content of soybean seeds to physiological quality of different cultivars. The work was developed in the Federal University of Pelotas, in the facilities of the Seed Science and Technology Graduate Program. The experimental design was randomized blocks in arranged in four replicates. The following soybean cultivars were used: BMX Apolo RR (12 lots), BMX Ativa RR (13 lots), BMX Energia RR (26 lots), BMX Força RR (24 lots), BMX Impacto RR (35 lots), BMX Magna RR (16 lots), BMX Turbo RR (44 lots), BMX Potência RR (82 lots) and NA 5909 RR (28 lots), with seeds produced in northwest Rio Grande do Sul. The determination of nutritional contents found in plant tissues of soybean seeds, were measured: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), Magnesium (Mg), Calcium (Ca), Sulfur (S). The macronutrient contents of the seeds vary according to genetic characteristics of the cultivars, with higher oscillations of nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium and sulfur contents present in soybean seeds. Potassium and calcium are defined as the most stable nutrients for the cultivars and seed lots analyzed. High concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium are determinants for the physiological quality of soybean seeds.
