Background: Several studies have investigated the association of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the relationship between the serum levels of lead and cadmium in Parkinson's disease. Methods: In this case-control study, the serum levels of lead and cadmium in 100 patients with Parkinson's disease referred to our university hospital, and 30 healthy individuals were investigated. Basic information such as age and gender and other demographic and clinical data were registered in the checklist. The levels of lead and cadmium were measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). Data was analyzed by SPSS software version 23, and a P < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: The mean cadmium level in patient and control groups was 14.91 ± 8.72 and 4.71 ± 2.72 ppb, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean lead level was 158.35 ± 157.64 and 35.35 ± 16.25 ppb in patients and controls, respectively (P < 0.001). At ages above 65 years, there was a significant difference between the level of cadmium (P < 0.001) and lead (P < 0.001) in patients and healthy subjects. In addition, there was a significant difference in the level of cadmium (P = 0.003) between patients and healthy subjects at ages below 65 years. This was true for both males (P < 0.05) and females (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the level of lead and cadmium in various severity rates of the disease, as well as in different symptoms of the patients. Conclusions: Based on the findings, the levels of serum lead and cadmium were higher in the patients, indicating a probable relationship between the Parkinson's disease and the levels of these metals.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> to investigate whether there is any relationship between cord blood theophylline levels and pulmonary morbidities in the early neonatal period in premature infants.</p><p><strong>Study Design:</strong> This prospective cohort study was conducted in Hacettepe University Hospital Neonatology Unit, between November 2010 and January 2012. Cord blood samples were collected at birth from premature infants, and theophylline levels were measured. Theophylline levels of cord blood were compared between infants with and without pulmonary morbidity.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong> A total of 90 infants (42 females, 48 males) were enrolled in the study. The mean gestational age was 31.1±3.1 weeks, and the mean birth weight was 1527±540 g. Early respiratory morbidities developed in 57 infants (63.3%), while no respiratory morbidities were observed in 33 infants (36.7%). There was no significant difference between the groups in blood gas parameters, oxygen saturation values and cord blood theophylline levels.</p><p><strong>Conclusions:</strong> Although the theophylline levels that were measured in the cord blood were much lower than therapeutic serum levels, we concluded that the cord theophylline level is not valuable as a prognostic factor for pulmonary morbidities in premature newborns. </p>

Abstract Lifestyle at the habitation immensely affects the progression of various illnesses, such as Osteoporosis and Parkinson’s disease (PD). These disorders lead patients to a sedentary lifestyle and result in significantly less movement compared to the average healthy individual. The combination of these backgrounds escalates the percentage of fall incidents. Quantifying physical activity levels from longitudinal Activities of Daily Living (ADL) data of these disease patients could stipulate intuition of their fall mechanisms. The objective of this study is to compare the osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease, and healthy group’s physical activity level from their ADL. For this study total of eighteen subjects participated (healthy=6, osteoporosis=6, PD=6). The result indicated that the dynamic physical activity level for the healthy subject was 13.2%, the osteoporosis subject was 7.9%, and the PD subject was 7.0%. This indicates that there was a significant decline in physical activity level for the PD compared to healthy subjects (P=0.0024*). Also, a comparison between healthy and osteoporosis subjects showed a significant difference (P=0.0066*). Lastly, the physical activity level of PD and osteoporosis subjects did not have a significant difference among them (P=0.6276). The aim of this study was to evaluate the physical activity level of the osteoporosis, PD, and healthy subjects. The systematic approach of collecting physical activity levels with the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) device allowed researchers to collect the quantitative data of ADL. In this experiment, healthy subjects were significantly more physically active compared to osteoporosis and PD patients.

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency is a major public health problem. Low vitamin D levels associated with adverse health consequences such as musculoskeletal health, cognitive decline and progression of cancer and death. The lack of vitamin D associated with major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) includes hypertension is considered. The ability to assess the general health, disease and treatment outcomes through saliva as a non-invasive, inexpensive and simple method of interest is located. The aim of this study was a comparative study of salivary and serum levels of vitamin D3 in patients with a history of developing high blood pressure and a healthy person.Methods: This study was a case - control survey, in which 40 patients with high blood pressure were examined. The control group including 40 healthy subjects. Both groups were matched in terms of age and gender. After collecting samples of serum and saliva, the amount of vitamin D level samples were measured using ELISA method by electrochemiluminescence (ELC), and then analyzed the results using software SPSS 16 and statistical test including Chi Square Test, Independent-Samples, linear regression model, the Mann-Whitney Test and Spearman correlation coefficient.Results: There was no significant difference in the mean serum levels of vitamin D among patients and healthy subjects (p= 0.588). In addition, there was no significant difference in the mean salivary levels of vitamin D between patients and healthy subjects (p= 0.833). There was no significant relationship between salivary and serum level of vitamin D in healthy individuals (p= 0.095). As well as there was no significant correlation between salivary and serum level of vitamin D in patients (p= 0.5).Conclusions: This study showed that vitamin D is a measurable marker in saliva, but its analysis in saliva, may not be a reliable tool for determining the vitamin D levels.

Objectives. To investigate leptin levels and their relationship to body composition and demographic and clinical characteristics of Turkish patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).Patients and Methods. Forty eligible PD patients and 25 healthy controls were included in the study. Body composition measurements (height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and body mass index (BMI)) of the whole sample and clinical findings of PD patients were evaluated in the on-state. A single 5 mL fasting blood sample was obtained from each participant in the morning. Severity of PD was evaluated using the Hoehn and Yahr scale and the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale.Results. The mean age of the patients and controls was60.8±9.4and61.8±5.8years, while the mean BMI was30.17±5.10and28.03±3.23and the mean leptin levels were6.8±6.9and3.9±3.8 ng/mL, respectively. Only age and gender were correlated with leptin levels. There was a significant difference (P<0.001) in leptin levels between male (3.6±3.1 ng/mL) and female (14.3±7.7 ng/mL) PD patients. Among the male PD patients, older age and higher BMI and WC values were associated with higher mean leptin levels. There was not any significant relationship between leptin levels and clinical findings in PD patients.Conclusion. These results may suggest that leptin levels have no determinative role in the follow-up of PD patients with regard to the severity and clinical prognosis of PD.

Abstract Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are highly expressed in brain and alterations in their levels have been shown in many neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence has shown that lncRNAs play role in the onset and progression of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and it can be used as a potential therapeutic target for the disease. In this study, we aimed to detect whether the serum expression levels of four candidate lncRNAs; H19, GAS5, HAR1B and LINC01783 are related with the clinical findings and treatment of PD or not. 83 patients and 50 healthy controls, matching in age and gender, are included in this study. We assessed how severe the disease is, by using the Hoehn Yahr (HY) staging and the Unified PD rating scale (UPDRS). Venous blood samples were taken from the participants. Serum samples were centrifuged and stored at -80°C until analysis. Expression levels of these lncRNAs were analyzed by a real-time PCR instrument in the laboratory. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using SPSS program. There was no significant difference between the PD patients and healthy controls in these lncRNAs serum levels. Age, gender, education level, presence of hypertension, type of onset of the disease and predominance of the right and left side, disease duration and treatment did not differ in lncRNA expression levels. Solely, there was a significant negative correlation between GAS5 and HY and UPDRS scores. Patients with family history had significantly higher levels of LINC01783. This is the first comprehensive study on lncRNAs in Turkish patients with PD. If any altered expression levels of these four lncRNAs were shown in the serum, it would provide an easy way to analyze underlying pathogenesis of the disease and contribute the possible biomarkers of PD.

Postural instability is a major cause of disability in patients with Parkinson’s disease and therefore increases their dependence on other people and decreases the quality of life in these patients. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of Postural instability and its onset in patients with Parkinson’s disease. We evaluated 250 Parkinson’s patients who referred to the movement disorder Clinic during 2016. All patient information, including gender, age, onset time of symptoms, as well as the time interval between symptoms start to postural instability were recorded. A total of 41 patients (16.4%) had a Postural instability, there was no significant difference between the two groups with and without instability in the distribution of sex and mean age. The mean age for the onset of symptoms in men and women was 54±11/3 and 50/6±12.2 respectively Which was significantly lower in women than in men (P value: 0.026). Also, the mean time between the onset of symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and the onset of motor instability was 5.2±4.9. This time was 8.2±4.5 in men and 11.5±5.7 in women which is significantly shorter in men than women (P value: 0.047). In our society, 16.4% of patients with Parkinson’s disease have a motor instability .this outbreak is independent of the variables of gender and age of the patients. According to our study, although women tend to experience signs of Parkinson’s disease earlier than men, the time interval between the onset of the disease manifestation and the onset of postural instability in males was shorter than that of women.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. Oxidative stress is a main modulator in the advancement of PD. This investigation aimed to evaluate the relations between serum trace elements, vitamin C, ferritin, transferrin, Nitrite Oxide (NOx) and Peroxynitrite (PrN) concentrations and clinical parameters in patients with PD. Methods: Serum concentrations of variables were measured in 75 PD patients and 75 healthy subjects from Imam Reza Hospital, Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran between Feb 2016 and Sep 2018. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to examine incremental diagnostic value of vitamin C, NOx, and PrN in the study groups. Results: Mean serum NOx (35.81±5.16 vs. 11.27±3.59 mol/L, P<0.001) and PrN (15.78±4.23 vs. 9.62±4.57 mol/L, P= 0.004) were markedly higher in patient group versus healthy individuals. Significant differences were also observed in the serum levels of vitamin C (P<0.001), copper (Cu) (P<0.001), Iron (Fe) (P=0.003), and Zinc (Zn) (P<0.001) between patients with PD and healthy subjects. Nevertheless, the serum levels of Se (P=0.515), ferritin (P=0.103), and transferrin (P=0.372) were not statistically significant between the study groups. ROC analysis has revealed a diagnostic ability of serum vitamin C levels for PD with an area under ROC curve of ≥0.7 (P<0.05) and relatively high sensitivity and specificity. Conclusion: Serum levels of NOx and PrN are significantly higher in patients with PD. In additions, serum vitamin C levels have a diagnostic value as a biomarker. Further studies are required with larger sample size to provide more detailed information about the cognitive profile of participants and the outcome measures.

The aim of this study was to determine the gait features that are most suitable for the quantified assessment of the severity of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This study computed the mean and variance of the four phases of gait intervals, i.e., stride, swing, stance and double-support intervals, and lateral difference to determine the difference between three groups, i.e., control subjects and PD patients with two severity levels (early and advanced stage) of the disease, PD1 and PD2. Data from 31 subjects were used in the study. The data were obtained from the public database (16 control healthy subjects, 6 Parkinson’s disease patients with early stages, and 9 Parkinson’s disease patients with advanced stages based on the Hoehn and Yahr scale). The main outcome measure of the study was the group difference of the four gait interval parameters and the statistical significance of this difference. The results show that there was a significant increase in the variance of the four gait intervals with the severity of the disease. However, there was no significant difference in the mean values between the three groups. It was also observed that the fraction corresponding to the double-support interval was significantly higher for PD patients. This study has shown that the variance of the gait parameters and the fraction of double-support interval are associated with the severity of PD and may be suitable measures for a quantified evaluation of the disease.

Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disease and it is known to cause motor disturbances associated with musculoskeletal problems of the locomotor apparatus, and non-motor symptoms, that are believed to have a harmful effect on health, social functioning and mobility. The aim of this study was to evaluate depression in patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) compared to subjects who do not have it. The sample consisted of 124 participants (mean age 69.18 ± 9.12). Patients with PD were recruited from a center of excellence for Parkinson’s disease (cases n = 62) and healthy subjects without PD from their relatives and caregivers (control n = 62). The Spanish version of Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) scores and categories were collected. A clear statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was evident in the BDI scores between both groups. Parkinson’s patients presented worse results on the BDI = 15.48 ± 7.24 points compared to healthy subjects with BDI = 7.03 ± 6.99 points. Regarding BDI categories, there were statistically significant differences (p < 0.001) for the greater BDI categories in the Parkinson’s group compared with healthy subjects. The depression represents an important potential risk for increased symptoms and negative impact among patients with PD compared with healthy subjects.

Expressions of IL-17, IL-21 and IL-23 in the Serum of Allergic Rhinitis PatientsThe present study aimed to investigate the expressions of interleukin-17 (IL-17), IL-21 and IL-23 in the serum of allergic rhinitis (AR) patients and to explore their relationship with special IgE (sFgE) in the serum. AR patients (n=24) and healthy subjects (n=12) were recruited and serum samples were collected. The serum level of IgE specific for inhalant allergens was determined using the automatic quantitative immunofluorescence analysis system, and the contents of IL-17, IL-21 and IL-23 in the serum were detected using ELISA. The level of serum IgE in the healthy individuals was categorized as grade 0 and that in the AR patients as grade 2-6. The mean contents of IL-17, IL-21 and IL-23 were 164.71 ±39.37 pg/mL, 199±97.86 pg/mL and 78.94±26.33 pg/mL, respectively, in the AR patients, and 67.75±18.24 pg/mL, 7.58±5.49 pg/mL and 13.58± 3.93 pg/mL, respectively, in the healthy subjects. Statistical analysis showed the serum levels of IL-17 and IL-23 in the AR patients were markedly higher than those in the healthy subjects, however, no significant difference was noted in the content of IL-21. Furthermore, the IL-17 level was positively related to the levels of IL-23 and IgE and the IL-23 level was positively related to the IgE level among AR patients, but no relations were observed between the IL-21 level and levels of IL-17, IL-23 and IgE. Our study indicates IL-17 and IL-23 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of AR and maybe IL-21 is not involved in the occurrence of AR.
