AbstractWe study the Riemannian Laplace-Beltrami operator L on a Riemannian manifold with Heisenberg group H1 as boundary. We calculate the heat kernel and Green's function for L, and give global and small time estimates of the heat kernel. A class of hypersurfaces in this manifold can be regarded as approximations of H1. We also restrict L to each hypersurface and calculate the corresponding heat kernel and Green's function. We will see that the heat kernel and Green's function converge to the heat kernel and Green's function on the boundary.

Abstract In this paper we introduce the notion of complex isoparametric functions on Riemannian manifolds. These are then employed to devise a general method for constructing proper r-harmonic functions. We then apply this to construct the first known explicit proper r-harmonic functions on the Lie group semidirect products $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m \ltimes {{\mathbb {R}}}^n$$ R m ⋉ R n and $${{\mathbb {R}}}^m \ltimes \mathrm {H}^{2n+1}$$ R m ⋉ H 2 n + 1 , where $$\mathrm {H}^{2n+1}$$ H 2 n + 1 denotes the classical $$(2n+1)$$ ( 2 n + 1 ) -dimensional Heisenberg group. In particular, we construct such examples on all the simply connected irreducible four-dimensional Lie groups.

In a recent paper Miranda Jr., Pallara, Paronetto and Preunkert have shown that the classical De Giorgi's heat kernel characterisation of functions of bounded variation on Euclidean space extends to Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below and which satisfy a uniform lower bound estimate on the volume of geodesic balls of fixed radius. We give a shorter proof of the same result assuming only the lower bound on the Ricci curvature.
