The most active research area is nanotechnology in cementitious composites, which has a wide range of applications and has achieved popularity over the last three decades. Nanoparticles (NPs) have emerged as possible materials to be used in the field of civil engineering. Previous research has concentrated on evaluating the effect of different NPs in cementitious materials to alter material characteristics. In order to provide a broad understanding of how nanomaterials (NMs) can be used, this paper critically evaluates previous research on the influence of rheology, mechanical properties, durability, 3D printing, and microstructural performance on cementitious materials. The flow properties of fresh cementitious composites can be measured using rheology and slump. Mechanical properties such as compressive, flexural, and split tensile strength reveal hardened properties. The necessary tests for determining a NM’s durability in concrete are shrinkage, pore structure and porosity, and permeability. The advent of modern 3D printing technologies is suitable for structural printing, such as contour crafting and binder jetting. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has opened up new avenues for the building and construction industry to become more digital. Regardless of the material science, a range of problems must be tackled, including developing smart cementitious composites suitable for 3D structural printing. According to the scanning electron microscopy results, the addition of NMs to cementitious materials results in a denser and improved microstructure with more hydration products. This paper provides valuable information and details about the rheology, mechanical properties, durability, 3D printing, and microstructural performance of cementitious materials with NMs and encourages further research.

In this research, self-healing due to further hydration of unhydrated cement particles is taken as an example for investigating the effects of capsules on the self-healing efficiency and mechanical properties of cementitious materials. The efficiency of supply of water by using capsules as a function of capsule dosages and sizes was determined numerically. By knowing the amount of water supplied via capsules, the efficiency of self-healing due to further hydration of unhydrated cement was quantified. In addition, the impact of capsules on mechanical properties was investigated numerically. The amount of released water increases with the dosage of capsules at different slops as the size of capsules varies. Concerning the best efficiency of self-healing, the optimizing size of capsules is 6.5 mm for capsule dosages of 3%, 5%, and 7%, respectively. Both elastic modulus and tensile strength of cementitious materials decrease with the increase of capsule. The decreasing tendency of tensile strength is larger than that of elastic modulus. However, it was found that the increase of positive effect (the capacity of inducing self-healing) of capsules is larger than that of negative effects (decreasing mechanical properties) when the dosage of capsules increases.

The agglomeration of nano-CaCO3 (NC) is the largest bottleneck in applications in cementitious materials. If nano-CaCO3 modifies the surface of micron-scale limestone powder (LS), then it will form nano-CaCO3/limestone composite particles (NC/LS). It is known that micron-scale limestone is easily dispersed, and the “dispersion” of NC is governed by that of LS. Therefore, the dispersion of nano-CaCO3 can be improved by the NC/LS in cementitious materials. In this work, the preparation of NC/LS was carried out in a three-necked flask using the Ca(OH)2-H2O-CO2 reaction system. The morphology of NC/LS was observed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The effects of NC/LS on the hydration products and pore structure of cementitious materials are proposed. 5% NC/LS was added into cement paste and mortar, and the mechanical properties of the specimens were measured at a certain age. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TG), and backscattered electron imaging (BSE) were conducted on the specimens to investigate the hydration products and pore structure. The properties of specimens with NC/LS were compared to that of control specimens (without NC/LS). The results revealed that NC/LS reduced the porosity and improved the mechanical properties of the cementitious materials.

The use of calcined clay and limestone as supplementary cementitious materials, can have a certain influence on the hydration of Portland cement. This paper reviewed the influence of limestone and calcined clay and the mixture of limestone and calcined clay on the hydration of cement. Both limestone and calcined clay accelerate the hydration reaction in the early hydration age and enhance the properties of cement. Limestone reacts with C3A to form carboaluminate, which indirectly stabilized the presence of ettringite, while calcined clay consumed portlandite to form C-(A)-S-H gel, additional hydration products promote the densification of pore structure and increase the mechanical properties. The synergistic effect of calcined clay and limestone stabilize the existence of ettringite and stimulate the further formation of carboaluminate, as well as the C-(A)-S-H gel, contributed to a dense microstructure.

Low temperature negatively affects the engineering performance of cementitious materials and hinders the construction productivity. Previous studies have already demonstrated that TiO2 nanoparticles can accelerate cement hydration and enhance the strength development of cementitious materials at room temperature. However, the performance of cementitious materials containing TiO2 nanoparticles at low temperatures is still unknown. In this study, specimens were prepared through the replacement of cement with 1 wt.%, 2 wt.%, 3 wt.%, 4 wt.%, and 5 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles and cured under temperatures of 0°C, 5°C, 10°C, and 20°C for specific ages. Physical and mechanical properties of the specimens were evaluated through the setting time test, compressive strength test, flexural strength test, hydration degree test, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to examine the performance of cementitious materials with and without TiO2 nanoparticles at various curing temperatures. It was found that low temperature delayed the process of cement hydration while TiO2 nanoparticles had a positive effect on accelerating the cement hydration and reducing the setting time in terms of the results of the setting time test, hydration degree test, and strength test, and the specimen with the addition of 2 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles showed the superior performance. Refined pore structure in the MIP tests, more mass loss of CH in TGA, intense peak appearance associated with the hydration products in XRD analysis, and denser microstructure in SEM demonstrated that the specimen with 2 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited preferable physical and mechanical properties compared with that without TiO2 nanoparticles under various curing temperatures.

Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is a material which has great potential for use in building industry. The aim of this work was to gain new superior properties by the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). This material can act as a microreinforcement improving mechanical properties of cementitious materials. The effect of 0–1 wt.% addition of CNTs on the mechanical properties, hydration characteristics and microstructure of AAS binder was determined. The addition of CNTs delays the setting of the binder and a partial deterioration of strength parameters was observed.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the influence of B. subtilis AP91 spores addition on the mechanical properties of mortars. B. subtilis strain AP91, isolated from rice leaves of the needle variety, which has an early cycle of production, was used at the concentration of 105 spores/mL in mortars with cement-to-sand ratio of 1:3 (by weight) and water-to-cement ratio (w/c) of 0.63. These spores were added in two different ways: in the mixing water and by immersion in a solution containing bacterial spores. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis showed crystals with calcium peaks on the EDS, which possibly indicates the presence of bioprecipitated calcium carbonate. The results obtained in the mechanical analysis showed that the bioprecipitation of CaCO3 by B. subtilis strain AP91 was satisfactory, particularly when the spores were added in the mixing water, increasing the compressive strength up to 31%. Thus, it was concluded that the addition of B. subtilis AP91 spores in the mixing water of cement mortars induced biocementation, which increased the compressive strength. This bioprecipitation of calcium carbonate may very well have other advantageous consequences, such as the closure of pores and cracks in cementitious materials that could improve durability properties, although more research is still needed on this matter.

With the premise of ensuring workability on a fresh mixture, the volume stability of hardened self-compacting steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) becomes an issue due to the content of cementitious materials increased with the volume fraction of steel fiber. By using the expansive agent to reduce the shrinkage deformation of self-compacting SFRC, the strength reduction of hardened self-compacting SFRC is another issue. To solve these issues, this paper performed an experimental investigation on the workability, shrinkage, and mechanical properties of self-compacting SFRC compared to the self-compacting concrete (SCC) with or without an expansive agent. The calcium-sulfoaluminate expansive agent with content optimized to be 10% mass of binders and the steel fiber with a varying volume fraction from 0.4% to 1.2% were selected as the main parameters. The mix proportion of self-compacting SFRC with expansive agent was designed by the direct absolute volume method, of which the steel fibers are considered to be the distributed coarse aggregates. Results showed that rational high filling and passing ability of fresh self-compacting SFRC was ensured by increasing the binder to coarse-aggregate ratio and the sand ratio in the mix proportions; the autogenous and drying shrinkages of hardened self-compacting SFRC reduced by 22.2% to 3.2% and by 18.5% to 7.3% compared to those of the SCC without expansive agent at a curing age of 180 d, although the expansion effect of expansive agent decreased with the increasing volume fraction of steel fiber; the mechanical properties, including the compressive strength, the splitting tensile strength, and the modulus of elasticity increased with the incorporation of an expansive agent and steel fibers, which met the design requirements.
