Next-generation sequencing technique has been known as a useful tool for de novo transcriptome assembly, functional annotation of genes and identification of molecular markers. This study was carried out to mine molecular markers from de novo assembled transcriptomes of four chilli pepper varieties, the highly pungent ‘Saengryeg 211’ and non-pungent ‘Saengryeg 213’ and variably pigmented ‘Mandarin’ and ‘Blackcluster’. Pyrosequencing of the complementary DNA library resulted in 361,671, 274,269, 279,221, and 316,357 raw reads, which were assembled in 23,607, 19,894, 18,340 and 20,357 contigs, for the four varieties, respectively. Detailed sequence variant analysis identified numerous potential single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs) for all the varieties for which the primers were designed. The transcriptome information and SNP/SSR markers generated in this study provide valuable resources for high-density molecular genetic mapping in chilli pepper and Quantitative trait loci analysis related to fruit qualities. These markers for pepper will be highly valuable for marker-assisted breeding and other genetic studies.

During the fall 2015 semester, I (i.e., the last author of this response) taught a doctoral seminar on performance appraisal. Although this course was a general survey of research and theory regarding work performance and performance appraisal processes and methods, we also talked extensively about the value of performance ratings to organizations, raters, and ratees. It was indeed serendipitous that this focal article came out when it did. As part of the final examination requirements (and, admittedly, as a pedagogical experiment), I asked the six PhD students in this course (i.e., the first six authors of this response) to read and respond to the Adler et al. (2016) debate regarding the relative merits of performance ratings. To highlight the perspectives of this next generation of industrial and organizational psychologists, I have collected here various representative comments offered by each of these emerging scholars on this issue.

Analytical studies are currently being conducted by the David Taylor Naval Ship R&D Center to assess the suitability of regenerative-cycle and intercooled, regenerative-cycle gas turbines for naval applications. This paper is the second part of a two-part paper which discusses results of initial investigations to identify attractive engine concepts based on existing turbomachinery and to consider the regenerator technology required to develop these engine concepts. Part I of the paper analyzed existing and next generation engines for performance improvement. Part II includes: definitions of performance parameters such as effectiveness and pressure drop, a discussion of regenerator types, and comments on regenerator materials, life, maintenance, and fouling. Tradeoffs between size, weight, and performance of plate-fin recuperators are examined using two of the hypothetical engines from Part I as examples. Results are compared for several different recuperator matrices to illustrate the effects of air-side and gas-side fin density and plate spacing on size, weight, and performance.

The demands for both thinner bare-die ball grid array (BGA) packages and thinner thermal solutions have added complexity for the thermal enabling design and material options associated with system on chip packages in mobile personal computer (PC) platforms. The thermomechanical interactions between the bare-die package and the thermal solution are very critical, creating the needs for: (1) an in-depth thermomechanical characterization to understand their impacts on product quality and performance and (2) a simple and yet robust modeling methodology to analyze design parameters using a commercially available software. In this paper, experimental metrologies and modeling methodology are developed with the details of contents documented. Validation of the newly developed tools and recommendation/guidance are also discussed for detailed assessments of thermomechanical tradeoffs for optimal design spaces for next-generation mobile platforms.

Dispersion plays an important role in aqueous chemical coating process for the preparation of BaTiO3 based next generation BME MLCC powder, since it affects coating coverage and layer morphology of the BaTiO3 particles as well as the microstructure and dielectric properties of the ceramics. In this paper, Poly (acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) is used as dispersant, its content influences are carefully investigated. It is known that low content of dispersant leads to not only poor dispersion, low coverage and irregular coating layer of BaTiO3 particles, but also bad temperature coefficient of capacitances and inhomogeneous microstructure of the resultant BaTiO3 ceramics, while excessive dispersant deteriorates the microstructure and performance by reducing the density of ceramic. With proper dispersant content, the particles are dispersed and coated perfectly, finally the dense X7R-satisfied ceramic are obtained with average grain size 103nm and fine microstructure, meeting the requirement of next generation MLCCs.
