Purpose The Internet of Things represents the network connection of people, processes, data and things. Due to the relevant position that this intelligent infrastructure is acquiring, the goal of the paper is to investigate the effects of Internet of Things on the companies’ value, with specific reference to the Intellectual Capital value. Design/methodology/approach The methodology is based on a single case study approach with an empirical analysis which aims to analyse whether and how the introduction of the Internet of Things’ innovations influences the value of the Intellectual Capital owned by a company. The evaluation method used for the empirical analysis is the Economic Value Added (EVA). The application is carried out on the company “Cisco Systems Inc.” by analysing the company’s financial reports covering the period 2007-2014. Findings The paper demonstrates the impact of the innovation of Internet of Things on Intellectual Capital owned by a high intensity cognitive company by determining its economic value. The results demonstrate that the introduction of projects involving the use of the Internet of Things has increased the value of Intellectual Capital over the years. Originality/value As the Internet of Things can guarantee efficiency, social and individual benefits, the effects of the Internet of Things on company performance and, particularly, on intangible corporate dimensions are analysed. Hence, the paper is directed to fill the literature gap on the analysis and evaluation of the Internet of Things’ impact on Intellectual Capital owned by high intensity cognitive companies. The research proposes strategic advice for decision making of companies interested in new technology investments.

In this chapter, I examine trends in today's news-orientated interfaces and the impact of digital interfaces on news consumption. Digital interfaces will be differentiated from traditional informational sources such as newspapers and television news. Additionally, I will explore several major characteristics or trends germane to today's news interfaces and their implications for how people consume news and, more generally, for how they transform information services: a) rapid innovation, b) interactivity, c) social, d) standardization, e) scale, f) media convergence and, g) the Internet of Things and Big Data.

The Internet of Things (IoT) brings connectivity to about every objects found in the physical space. It extends connectivity not only to computer and mobile devices but also to everyday objects. From connected fridges, cars and cities, the IoT creates opportunities in numerous domains. This chapter briefly surveys some IoT applications and the impact the IoT could have on societies. It shows how the various application of the IoT enhances the overall quality of life and reduces management and costs in various sectors.

This paper analyses the influence of the Internet of Things (IoT) on business performance guided by the following objectives; assessing the influence of the Internet of things positively on sales and marketing strategies of business; to determine the influence of the Internet of things on resources management in modern businesses and to analyze the influence of the Internet of things on business profitability. The paper conducted exploratory research to study the Impact of IoT data on Business performance was conducted. Through the literature review process recently published papers on IoT and business performance including sales and marketing strategies, resource management profitability was gathered. Research papers, Journals, Internet Sites, and books were used to collate the relevant content on the subject. The analysis conducted by this study indicated that most published studies showed that IoT has huge potential for businesses across many sectors. The data collected through the implementation of IoT provide business with opportunities of increasing efficiency which improves sales and marketing, resource management, growth potential, and profitability. This study recommends that despite the challenges in the development of IoT technologies, it’s an implementation in businesses is inevitable as they seek to increase the performance.

The stable temperature in the laboratories is the major requirement for ensuring safety at work. The changes in the temperature which are oftentimes caused by precisely unrecognized factor may provide hazardous impacts on humans who are working in such place. Similar researches were conducted; however, they did not use NodeMCU as a microcontroller and MQTT protocol. This study tried to build a real-time temperature observation system using MQTT protocol based on the Internet of Things which has a fast delivery speed message. The temperature and humidity were captured by using DHT22 sensor that were then stored in database for one month. The result showed that the temperature change of the laboratory could be rapidly detected through the tests process on a certain heat-produced device. It could be analyzed periodically using the real-time application so that the impact of temperature rise could be detected quickly.

Abstract Information technology has massively transformed the world of business over the past fifty years - first individual functional areas within companies (“first wave”), later increasingly also cross-divisional value-added processes and trade (“second wave”). Those companies that recognized the tremendous economic potential of these upheavals and consistently adapted, profited enormously - many others, however, fell dramatically. At the same time, innovative startups emerged that successfully created and occupied new markets. With the Internet of Things (IoT), the third digital wave is currently rolling up. Their impact will be enormous - both for our everyday lives and for many industries that have so far been largely spared the disruptive power of digital transformation. Accordingly, the challenges facing most companies today are: understanding more complex competition, acquiring new digital technologies, making existing offerings smart, developing new services, networking production, efficiently analyzing vast amounts of data, and building viable organizations to push all this forward. The IoT is a driver for digitization. By analyzing machine data, the use of sensors and the intelligent real-time processing of huge amounts of data in the cloud, new business models are created. With the information gained, companies are able to improve their value chain. However, one of the most difficult issues in this context for many companies is how they can further develop their existing business model or establish successful new business models that will be based on new technologies and IoT. To investigate resulting impacts, we draw on the existing business models and deduct specifics for the Internet of Things. Building on this, in order to reach the aims of the paper the authors will use a descriptive research method and a case study in order to present how new business models work with the IoT.
