This chapter deals with the tribology of marine diesel engines. Several types of diesel engines have been installed and used in the engine room of marine ships. Some of them, used for propulsion, operate at low-speed in a two-stroke combustion process in conjunction with propellers. Four-stroke engines are used for power generation and operates at medium-speed. In general, two or more four-stroke engines, including spares, are installed in the large ships. Tribological problems are important issue in the respect of reliability in the marine diesel engines, and there are many tribological engine components including bearings, pistons, fuel injection pumps and rollers. Moreover, the marine engines have lubricant problems such as lacquering. Improvements to the tribological performance of marine engine components, and lubricants can provide reduced oil and fuel consumption, improved durability, increased engines power outputs and maintenance. Therefore, this chapter shows better designs and methods in order to improve the tribological problem in the marine diesel engines.

The paper presents problems related to testing of the technical condition of high-speed marine diesel engines that are not equipped with indicated valves, as it is in the case of larger medium-and low-speed marine internal combustion engines. In this case, in assessment of technical condition of engine fuel injection system and valve gear system a vibration signals (in time / angle domain) analysis modified method called HFRT (High Frequency Resonance Technique) can be used. This method indirectly helps also to evaluate the fuel combustion process in the engine cylinders. The paper presents the theoretical basis of a modified HFRT method, physical implementation of the marine diesel engine system’s analyzer used for marine engines testing built at the Institute of Construction and Operation of Ships at Polish Naval Academy (PNA) in Gdynia. The paper also includes a description of the vibration signal processing methodology and examples of measurements made in the ships conditions for a few selected types of engines.

Since the beginning, development of marine diesel engines was turned towards obtaining a low fuel consumption and the result has reflected in engines construction: increased bore and cylinder liner diameter, higher working pressures and lower piston speeds. Similar improvements have taken place in the supercharging system, innovative fuel injection technologies and changes in combustion pressures. Nowadays, the trend of development has changed, the concept of reducing NOx and SOx emissions became a priority in order to meet the limits imposed by international organizations. As a consequence, a series of changes in operating mode of marine engines was noticed but also several innovations appeared in the construction and development of marine engines.

Abstract Marine engines are very complex technical objects, having many important functional systems, which include, inter alia, injection system, characterized by high unreliability. In this system, there may be different types of defects (damage) that affect the engine parameters, including specific fuel consumption, as well as failures endanger the safety of the ship. The indicator diagrams and analysis of indicated parameters have limited utility in the diagnosis of damages of marine engine, although this is a method commonly used in operational practice. To achieve greater diagnostic effectiveness, when, based on indicator diagrams, are calculated and then the characteristics of heat release is analysed - net of heat release characteristics and the intensity of the heat release, it was demonstrated. This procedure is particularly effective in the diagnosis of damages of marine diesel engine injection system components. It has been shown that the characteristics of heat release contain information about the condition of the injection systems, which enable to diagnose their failures. This is shown on the example of a clogged nozzle holes (their carbonizations). The obtained results allowed selecting the diagnosis symptoms, useful in detecting these faults in the injection system, from the characteristics of heat release: net heat release (Q) and intensity of heat release (q). The object of the research was typical marine medium speed engine Sulzer A25/30.

The article presents the stages of fuel injection modeling of the four-stroke marine diesel engines as a set of functional blocks the of the fuel waves flow. The elaborated model includes the values of changing pressures in the combustion chamber and the course of changes of the pressure in spaces of the injection pump, injection pipe and the injector. Linear and local losses, as well as the conditions for the functioning were taken into account in stages of the fuel flow. The influence of different values of the engine load on the pressure course of the in individual spaces of injection apparatus and in the engine cylinder during the working cycle depending on the crank angle of rotation of the crankshaft have been simulated. The mathematical relationships were selected and the structural and experimental data are used, allowing the calculation of the parameters of interest for the simulated process.

This article suggested broadening the standard methods for diagnosing the technical condition of diesel engines to include an analysis of the instantaneous rotational speed of compression combustion engines with the use of a novel algorithm. The authors revised the subject concerning the use of the analysis of instantaneous changes in the rotational speed of an engine when assessing its technical condition and the location of the malfunction. An algorithm and its practical implementation in a prototype diagnostic system called SpeedMA were presented. This article reported the test results of the prototype in the context of indicating the engine cylinder in which ignition failed to occur. Tests were carried out for two marine engines: a low-speed trunk engine directly driving the fixed-pitch propeller and a medium-speed trunk engine driving the alternator. For each case, an analysis was carried out for different engine loads and at individual cylinders in which combustion failed to occur. The experimental results showed an unambiguous relation between the combustion process of the examined engines and changes in the instantaneous rotational speed. The results also confirmed the usefulness of the proposed method and showed the correct operation of the presented diagnostic algorithm. The proposed diagnostic system could be used during the operation of engines running in real ship engine rooms.

Emulsified fuel technology has been developed since the early 1980’s to the improve combustion efficiency of marine diesel engines by creating a secondary atomization effect after the initial fuel injection. The main challenge is to measure the improved sfoc of ships accurately and reliably. This paper presents a proposed method to measure the sfoc accurately and reliably to the order of 1%. Electronic governor also poses new challenge to measuring the sfoc of ships burning emulsified fuel. Meanwhile, fuel types supplied to ship owners are of increased varying properties although still complying to ISO8217 standard. This paper describes the innovations in emulsified fuel technology that were developed to meet these challenges.

Increasing the durability of the tribo-couplings of marine diesel engines, which determine their resource, is an urgent problem due to both the safety of navigation and economic factors. The main reason for engine crankshafts failures, which determine the need for major repairs, is the wear of the necks. The solution to the problem of increasing wear resistance and, accordingly, durability is associated with the use of triboactive additives in the lubricant. Despite in-depth and thorough research in the field of application of organo-inorganic materials for use as additives in engine oil to increase the durability of tribo-nodes, it is almost impossible to choose the optimal material for specific conditions, since the studies were carried out for various operating conditions and according to various methods. The purpose of the work is to develop a tribotechnical additive to motor oils that provides an increase in the reliability and efficiency of technical operation of medium-speed marine diesel engines by forming a thin-film metal-ceramic coating on the friction surfaces of steel parts of tribo-nodes, which allows to obtain an optimal set of parameters of the wear-resistant coating material. The paper presents studies of the operational properties of additives in engine oil of 17 organo-inorganic tribotechnical materials of 4 groups — natural and artificial polymers, from which more than 20 compositions and composites were made. It has been established that the most promising is the use of nanocomposites based on vermiculite modified with acid as additives in engine oil, since they have a minimum coefficient of friction with boundary lubrication (0.007-0.014) as well as high wear resistance of 40X steel and provide a minimum wear rate of the bearing liner, thereby increasing the tribo-tension life by more than 3 times, and, accordingly, operating costs are reduced.

Abstract Due to the limited scope of the diagnostic equipment on the ship, the technical condition of the engine is based on the measurement of pressure and temperature at the available measuring points. Usually it is the exhaust temperature at the outlet of individual cylinders, supercharging pressure, oil temperature and cooling water temperature. Sometimes the bearing temperature and turbocharger speed are also measured. Normally, if the engine is adapted to this, the maximum combustion pressure is measured periodically although distorted through the channels with the indicator valves. The paper presents examples of the exploitation of marine diesel engines, where there is a discrepancy between the actual technical state of the engine and the technical state of the engine based on the traditional diagnostic method based on a limited set of available parameters. These discrepancies resulted, inter alia, from the regular fuel injection timing and fuel dose adjustment, so that the measured parameters were adequate to the actual load of the engine. This adjustment is justified, but leads to masking engine components wear symptoms. In this situation, it can only be stated that the state of the fuel injection equipment is suitable for the current technical state of the some engine components and does not provide a sufficient basis for the extension of the repair interval.
