As reported in the “Clean energy for all Europeans package” set by the EU, a sustainable transition from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy is necessary to improve the quality of life of citizens and the livability in cities. The exploitation of renewable sources, the improvement of energy performance in buildings and the need for cutting-edge national energy and climate plans represent important and urgent topics to be faced in order to implement the sustainability concept in urban areas. In addition, the spread of polygeneration microgrids and the recent development of energy communities enable a massive installation of renewable power plants, high-performance small-size cogeneration units, and electrical storage systems; moreover, properly designed local energy production systems make it possible to optimize the exploitation of green energy sources and reduce both energy supply costs and emissions. In the present paper, a set of key performance indicators is introduced in order to evaluate and compare different energy communities both from a technical and environmental point of view. The proposed methodology was used in order to assess and compare two sites characterized by the presence of sustainable energy infrastructures: the Savona Campus of the University of Genoa in Italy, where a polygeneration microgrid has been in operation since 2014 and new technologies will be installed in the near future, and the SPEED2030 District, an urban area near the Campus where renewable energy power plants (solar and wind), cogeneration units fed by hydrogen and storage systems are planned to be installed.

This paper presents the results of a study on the reliability and performance of the solar-powered street lighting systems installed at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Nigeria, a hot and humid environment. The technical performance of the systems was studied using the following performance indicators: system energy yield, capture loss, as well as the system performance ratio while the reliability of the systems was examined using a model developed from the findings from the maintenance and fault diagnosis of the systems. The model was used to predict the total failure and survival probability of the systems using the Weibull distribution. The performance evaluation during the monitored period (February 2012 to January 2015) indicated that the performance ratios of the systems vary from 70% to 89% and the energy yields of the systems ranging from 2.87 h/day to 5.57 h/day. The results from the reliability analysis also showed that when the stress concentration factor around the notch between the cable terminals in the charge controller increases, the charge controller will become overheated, which in turn affected other components of the systems. The implications of this study are also discussed for the design and development of future solar-powered street lighting systems.

Most modern power plants generating electric power equipped with synchronous generators. The correct operation of energy economy depends on reliability of such electrical machines. In this article issue of increasing reliability of turbo generator by increasing reliability of its brush contact unit is considered. Description of brush contact unit and its possible damages is given. Equivalent electrical circuit of contact layer of brush contact unit is performed. The equations are formed and the dynamical simulation model consisting of electric source and two brush contact units is created. With help of this model alternative method of improving parameters of brush contact unit and increasing reliability of turbo generator at once is calculated and shown. The implementation of the proposed method of increasing the turbo generator brush contact units reliability can have different technical performance, but the principle laid down in the method remains the same.

The relevance of the study is associated with the need to determine scientifically based principles for the design of wind-powered high-rise buildings. The article analyzes the main climatic parameters affecting the design of wind-powered high-rise buildings. While current research focuses mainly on the technical performance and savings of wind power plants (WPPs), modeling wind energy potential based on the analysis of climatic parameters allows you to optimize design solutions taking into account the influence of the environment. For various stages of the design of the integration of wind turbines into a high-rise building, it is important to take into account the dimensions of climate systems (macro, meso and micro levels), based on the laws operating within certain territorial boundaries. The article discusses the macroclimatic indicators that determine the total energy resource of wind in the region. The influence of the parameters of the mesoclimate on the wind potential has been determined, in accordance with the characteristics of the natural and anthropogenic environment (relief, the presence of forests, proximity to water bodies, urban development). The parameters that clarify the energy potential of the wind at the microclimatic level, taking into account the location of the wind turbine in the building, have been investigated. As a result of the analysis, a diagram of the structure of preliminary modeling of the energy wind potential at various climatic levels in the design of wind turbines in high-rise buildings has been determined.
