Typical application of bidirectional DC/DC power converter exists in hybrid cars. Recently, a similar approach has been applied in hybrid propelled ships as well. In this paper, a novel low power bidirectional DC/DC power converter of standard Buck/Boost topology has ben designed in order to explore possibilities of the high power design in maritime applications. In order to discover critical points of a design, thermal imaging has been investigated. The results clearly indicate that the proposed solution is more cost effective than a typical standard bidirectional DC/DC power converter. Likewise, the improvement in maneuvering of the propelled vessel system with two and more electric drives has been investigated and compared to a classical diesel, single engine propulsion system.

The NASA Quiet Engine Program will incorporate all available noise-reduction technology into a propulsion system suitable for subsonic civil transport aircraft. Full-scale experimental hardware is being built and tested primarily for noise performance. The program is in process, and component and engine tests to date indicate that it is possible to achieve or exceed noise reduction objectives of 15–20 PNdB below the levels of 707/DC-8 long-range transport aircraft.

The integration of the propulsion system with the airframe is critical to the success of the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT), a second generation supersonic civil transport aircraft. The installation of the propulsion system directly impacts the overall aircraft system aerodynamic performance and noise. This is especially true for a supersonic aircraft where the performance of the inlet and exhaust nozzle is more important to the aircraft than the performance of the turbomachinery. Careful consideration of potential safety issues, maintenance practices, and operational requirements, including the split of supersonic and subsonic flight, must be accounted for when establishing the installation approach. The installation design philosophy has a major impact on the propulsion and aircraft system weight, and consequently, the overall economic viability of the aircraft.
