The electroactive behavior of ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC) actuator was modeled and the optimum parameters for maximizing the bending deformation of the material were studied. A suitable equation of motion characterizing the mechanical response of the IPMC actuator subjected to a given electrical field was proposed considering the electro-chemical parameters. To find the optimum conditions maximizing the blocking force and deflection, multivariable constrained equation was modeled and design variables such as saturation level of hydration, applied voltage, and the thickness of IPMC were studied. IPMC samples based on Nafion membrane were manufactured and the model was verified by experiment.
