Wheat is often the largest single ingredient in piglet diets and therefore variation in quality may have a large effect on piglet performance. Currently there is no rapid method for the nutritive assessment of wheat. The livestock feed industry traditionally uses bushel weight as a predictor of nutritive value; however this assumption has recently been challenged by a literature review (Miller and Wilkinson, 1998) and by a weaner trial (Miller, Toplis, Arnold, Cook and Marshall, 2000). The aim of this experiment was to compare two more extreme bushel weights of Riband (64 v 78 kg/hl) than used in the previous experiment (Miller et al., 2000) when fed to weaned piglets with and without a xylanase enzyme. In order to amplify possible differences wheats were uncooked and included in the test diets at an atypically high level. We hypothesised that 78 kg/hl bushel weight would outperform 64kg/hl bushel weight (which is below the standard accepted by feed mills for feed wheat) and that enzyme supplementation would improve the performance of both wheats.

The Nigerian commercial poultry sector is dependent on commercial feeds.Evaluation of the operational and pricing efficiencies of poultry feed marketing isessential for improving efficiencies in the feed industry and lowering the price ofpoultry products. A multistage sampling technique was used to select the firms studied.Tools used to analyze data collected included index of pricing and operational efficiencies;and regression analysis. The firms studied handled about N251,870,000 of feed perannum, had an annual Inventory Carrying Cost (ICC) of N4,587,762 and an averageICC of N114,694 per firm. The Marketing Costs (MC) for all the firms was N16,813,860per annum while the average MC was N420,347. Major contributors to ICC werestorage; handling and security costs while storage, transportation and capital costswere major contributors to MC. Efforts to minimize costs should therefore be focusedat reducing transportation costs and optimal utilization of storage space. The AverageMarketing Costs (AMC) declined with increase in quantity marketed (QM) while unitprofit increased with QM. Firms therefore need to increase QM. Marketing Margin(MM) and MC were significantly different from each other. Also, QM was a significantexplanatory variable of MM, implying that there was no pricing efficiency in themarket. Relative efficiency increased with QM, suggesting that firms should strive toincrease the quantity of feed marketed. The major contribution of this study is that itprovides information on the components of marketing costs and size economies in thepoultry feed industry in Ondo State, Nigeria.

In the animal feed industry, steam is used in pellet making machines. In this process, steam from the boiler is distributed to the pellet mill through the pipe. The purpose of this study is to observe the waste of electricity costs of operating a boiler by calculating heat loss in a distribution pipe. The method of assessing heat loss is done by calculating losses caused by heat loss in the boiler distribution. Then make a calculation application model based on the data obtained. From the data analyzed, the amount of heat lost in the non-insulating distribution pipe is 0.766 kJ/s with a loss of Rp 5.628,600 operating costs per month compared to heat loss in an isolated pipe condition of 0.047 kJ/s with losses which cost slightly more than Rp 368 190 / month. This heat loss calculation process is made on an android application by entering the calculation formula on the program and the data that has been obtained.
