The aim of this research was to evaluate the nutritional enhancement of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 LC-PUFA) composition of edible lamb Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle, heart, kidney, and liver in response to dietary supplementation of lot-fed lambs with or without omega-3 oil fortified pellets. The hypothesis tested was that fortifying feedlot pellets with omega-3 oil will enhance the human health beneficial n-3 LC-PUFA composition of edible lamb muscle tissue and organs. Seventy-five Tattykeel Australian White lambs exclusive to the MARGRA brand, with an average body weight of 30 kg at six months of age, were randomly assigned to the following three dietary treatments of 25 lambs each, and lot-fed as a cohort for 47 days in a completely randomized experimental design: (1) Control grain pellets without oil plus hay; (2) Omega-3 oil fortified grain pellets plus hay; and (3) Commercial whole grain pellets plus hay. All lambs had ad libitum access to the basal hay diet and water. Post-slaughter fatty acid composition of the Longissimus thoracis et lumborum muscle, liver, kidney, and heart were determined using thee gas chromatography–mass spectrophotometry technique. Results indicated significant variations (p < 0.05) in fatty acid profiles between tissues and organs. Omega-3 oil fortified pellets significantly (p < 0.05) increased ≥C20 n-3 LC-PUFA (C20:5n-3 eicosapentaenoate, EPA + C22:5n3 docosapentaenoate, DPA + C22:6n3 docosahexanoate DHA); C18:3n-3 alpha-linolenate, ALA; C18:2 conjugated linoleic acid, CLA; total monounsaturated fatty acids, MUFA; polyunsaturated fatty acids, PUFA contents; and reduced the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in all lamb organs and tissues without impacting shelf-life. The findings demonstrate that the inclusion of omega-3 oil in feedlot diets of lambs enhances the human health beneficial omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid profiles of edible muscle tissue and organs without compromising meat quality.

AbstractThraustochytrids, marine protists, have attracted attention as a proven alternative source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). We isolated a high diversity of thraustochytrids from Thailand and tested their potential use in the production of high-value fatty acids. The isolated thraustochytrids can be categorized into seven major groups based on unique morphological features, molecular phylogeny and fatty acid profiles. Two of the seven isolated thraustochytrid groups could potentially be new lineages in the Labyrinthulomycetes. A thorough analysis of the fatty acid profiles of stipe and blade from the kelp species Laminaria hyperborea is presented. Lipid extracts were fractionated into neutral lipids, free fatty acids, and polar lipids, prior to derivatization and GC-MS analysis. A total of 42 fatty acids were identified and quantified, including the n-3 fatty acids α-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, and eicosapentaenoic acid. The fatty acid amounts are higher in blade than in stipe (7.42 mg/g dry weight and 2.57 mg/g dry weight, resp.). The highest amounts of n-3 fatty acids are found within the neutral lipid fractions with 590.6 ug/g dry weight and 100.9 ug/g dry weight for blade and stipe, respectively. The amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids are 3.4 times higher in blade than stipe. The blade had the highest PUFA/SFA ratio compared to stipe (1.02 versus 0.76) and the lowest n-6/n-3 ratio (0.8 versus 3.5). This study highlights the compositional differences between the lipid fractions of stipe and blade from L. hyperborea. The amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to saturated- and monounsaturated fatty acids is known to influence human health. In the pharmaceutical, food, and feed industries, this can be of importance for production of different health products.

Microalgae has been getting broad attention of researchers and investors lately, especially when discussing on healthy food and energy sources for the future. In this study, twelve samples of mixed microalgae from outdoor ponds were analyzed for their fatty acid compositions. The potential of microalgae to solve variety of world’s problems was not realized because of bottleneck in microalgal supplies at reasonable cost. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine fatty acid profiles of mixed microalgae from tilapia fish ponds. The study was conducted in Tapak Ternakan Ikan, Taman Pertanian Universiti and Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. Mixed microalgae were extracted for their lipids with methanol: chloroform mixture and after transesterification, the fatty acid methyl ester were analyzed using gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detector. Results showed that saturated was the major constituent fatty acids. The average percentages of saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids obtained were 45.62 ± 1.37%, 20.05 ± 1.14%, and 34.33 ± 3.17% respectively. The most dominant fatty acid profiles were C18:3n3 (α-linolenic acid) and C16:0 (palmitic acid), with the overall percentages of 19.97% and 19.40% respectively. The fatty acid profiles of mixed microalgae was good with a decent balance of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Kajian telah dijalankan untuk mendapatkan strain baru kulat yang menghasilkan GLA hasil penyaringan 21 pencilan yang diperoleh daripada tanah hutan simpan di sekitar Selangor dan Negeri Sembilan. Sebanyak 5 pencilan kulat daripada 21 pencilan yang diperoleh telah dikenalpasti menghasilkan asid γ–linolenik (GLA) (18:3, n-6) iaitu SK8, SK22, 2A1, DR dan K3, yang menghasilkan 6%, 7.6%, 6.9% 5.4% dan 13.5% GLA daripada asid lemak total masing-masing. Kelima-lima pencilan tersebut juga didapati menghasilkan peratusan lipid yang berbeza, iaitu 30%, 20%, 32%, 30% dan 8% lipid total (w/w, biojisim), masing-masing. Pencilan K3 mempunyai kandungan GLA yang setara dengan kandungan GLA dalam minyak ‘Evening Primrose’ yang dihasilkan secara komersial pada masa kini, iaitu 8-12% GLA dari asid lemak total. Pencilan 2A1 menunjukkan penghasilan GLA tertinggi (0.0096g GLA/g glukosa) berbanding SKA, SK22, DR dan K3, yang menghasilkan 0.0032. 0.0039, 0.007 dan 0.0025g, GLA/g glukosa, masing-masing. Perbezaan profil asid lemak bagi keseluruhan 21 pencilan juga dibincangkan. Kata kunci: Oleaginous; kulat; γ-linolenic; asid lemak poli-tidak-tepu. In our studies, 21 filamentous fungi were isolated from soil obtained from various sites of forest reserves in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Five isolates (SK8, SK22, 2A1, DR and K3) were found to produced γ–linolenic acid (GLA) (18:3, n–6) at 6%, 7.6%, 6.9%, 5.4% and 13.5% of their respective total fatty acid with lipid contents of 30%, 20%, 32%, 30% and 8% (w/w, biomass), respectively. The GLA content of K3 is comparable to that of the commercially available ‘Evening Primrose’ with GLA comprising of 8–12% of its total fatty acids. The difference in the fatty acid profiles from all 21 isolates is discussed here. Key words: Oleaginous; fungi γ-linolenic; polyunsaturated fatty acids.

This study was carried out with Hydrachna processifera (Acari, Hydracnidia), Eylais setosa and Hydrodroma despiciens common in lakes. Fatty acid ratios were evaluated comparatively in terms of species. For this purpose, these species collected from the Karamık lake (AfyonkarahisarTurkey) were analyzed by GC-MS gas chromatography in the laboratory. In the results of the analysis, saturated fatty acids such as myristic (C14:0), palmitic (C16:0), heptadecanoic (C17:0), and stearic acid (C18:0) were observed in high amount. There was a significant difference between species in terms of total saturated fatty acid ratios. The monounsaturated fatty acids palmitoleic (C16:1), oleic (C18:1), and erucic (C22:1) are the most common acids. The major polyunsaturated fatty acids were linolenic (C18:3), eicosatrienoic (C20:3), eicosapentaenoic (C20:5) and docosahexaenoic (C22:6) acid, linoleic (C18:2), gamma-linolenic 3), eicosadienoic (C20:2) and arachidonic (C20:4) acids. At the end of the study, there were considerable differences between the species studied in terms of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in these water mite species. This study also found that the fatty acid composition was different for each species and this is important for the molecular taxonomy of water mites.
