The investigations of meadow and pasture fallows in Czyrnianka catchment area, during vegetative season of year 2002, were carried out. The purposes of these investigations were qualifications of plant communities, characterisation of their habitat conditions and making habitats for constant protection. 53 phytosociological relevés by classic Braun-Blanquet method were performed and taken under numerical classification. As a result of classification the types of <i>Gladiolo-Agrostietum</i> and <i>Epilo bio-Juncetum</i> associations and <i>Cirsium arvense-Agropyron</i> repens community were originated. For characterisation of habitat conditions the indicator values by Ellenberg were used. The Detrendent Correspondence Analysis showed that moisture was responsible for differentiation of community composition. A dry variant <i>Gladiolo-Agrostetum</i> association, which contains species characteristic for xerothermical grasslands, is the most interesting from botanical point of view. This community is also protection worth.

The studies of fallow lands were undertaken on the Przemyśl hills in the area of Cisowa locality which, till very recently, have been owned by a State Farm (PGR). The objective was to gain insight into the composition and diversification of plant communities on meadows, pastures and fields laid fallow, in context of habitat conditions prevailing after the use had ceased. The study utilised an old cadastral map showing the type of communities by category of use: meadows, pasture, and cultivated fields. The study material consisted of 180 relevés, obtained in the period 1998-2000 using the Braun-Blanquet method. By employing numerical classification, eight plant communities were distinguished, including only two of the association rank: Epilobio-Juncetum effusi, Arrhenatheretum elatioris. The analysis of Ellenberg’s habitat indices proved that all the communities belonged to the half-light vegetation group, occurring mostly on fresh soils, under intermediate moisture-content conditions, more rarely on moist soils which do not dry out. The soil reaction was most often neutral or slightly acidic, and in most of the soils the nitrogen content was in the intermediate range. The two principal trends in the succession of communities in the area, after its farming management has ceased, are: marked increase in species richness resulting from the expansion of species, and the process of overgrowing by woody vegetation.

Camparative studies of the floristic content and an analysis of the homogeneity of the herb layer were conducted with the use of objective statistical methods and a numerical classification technique.

The water and substrate properties in the vegetation zones characteristic of the late stages of lake overgrowth were determined. It was demonstrated that the spatial distribution of plant communities conformed with the spatial gradient of habitat conditions. With regard to water properties the largest differences between the zones were found in Mg<sup>2+</sup>, Ca<sup>2+</sup>, electrolytic conductivity and NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>. In the case of substrate the zones differed significantly in Ca<sup>2+</sup>, total Fe and organic matter content. The water properties varied greatly during the vegetative season in the successive zones. The temporal changes often proceeded at a different level of a given component or factor in most zones. The differences between the zones were, however, maintained. It appears that the plant communities can alter their habitats to a large extent. In the lake studied, the invasion of raised and transitional bog vegetation was observed. The process of dystrophy proceeded from the terrestrialized peripheral parts of the lake to the centre of the lake.

An investigation was made to determine the influence of alkali granite and bordering rocks on the distribution of plant species and plant communities. Six plant communities were successfully distinguished in the study area by using the TWINSPAN numerical classification technique, followed by refinement using the Braun-Blanquet technique. The plant communities could easily be correlated with specific habitat types. The results show that rock type as well as aspect (north and south facing slopes) influence the distribution of plant communities strongly. Groups of species which are reliable indicators for specific habitat conditions were also identified.

The Tall-Herb and Tall-Grass Plant Communities of the ClassMulgedio-Aconiteteain the Subalpine Belt of the Krivánska Malá Fatra MTS (Slovakia)The following paper reports the results of phytosociological research of tall-herb and tall-herb plant communities within the classMulgedio-Aconiteteain the subalpine belt of the Krivánska Malá Fatra Mts. The data set of 209 relevés was sampled and analysed using numerical classification and ordination. Major ecological gradients were interpreted using Ellenberg's indicator values and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index. Ten associations within five alliances were distinguished and characterised:Aconitetum firmi, Digitali ambiguae-Calamagrostietum arundinaceae, Helianthemo grandiflorae-Calamagrostietum arundinaceae, Potentillo aurei-Calamagrostietum arundinaceae, Allio victorialis-Calamagrostietum villosae, Festucetum carpaticae, Adenostylo alliariae-Athyrietum alpestris, Aconito firmi-Adenostyletum alliariae, Geranio robertiani-Delphinietum elatiandAconito firmi-Rumicetum alpini.Relationships between the floristic composition of the communities and environmental variables were analysed by canonical correspondence analysis.

AbstractThe vegetation of the aquatic and marshland habitats of the Orava region (north of Slovakia) was studied in 2009, using traditional phytosociological methods. Sixteen aquatic and eighteen marsh plant communities were described within 96 phytosociological relevés by using TWINSPAN with the application of the dominance principle. Three associations, Potametum alpini, Potametum zizii and Ranunculo-Juncetum bulbosi, were found as new communities for Slovakia. Myriophylletum verticillati, Potametum nodosi, Potametum graminei and Alisma gramineum community were recorded in the northernmost localities in Slovakia. Among marsh communities, Calletum palustris is very rare, both in the Orava region and in Slovakia as a whole. According to Ellenberg’s indicator values (EIV), moisture was evaluated as the main ecological gradient. Plant communities are ordered along the first Detrended Correspodence Analysis (DCA) axis in a typical hydroseries (Potametea → Lemnetea → Phragmition communis → Phalaridion arundinaceae, Oenanthion aquaticae and Sparganio-Glycerion → Magnocaricion elatae). The second DCA axis was most correlated with EIV for nutrients. Among the five directly measured ecological characteristics (temperature, pH and conductivity of water, water depth, and substrate type), conductivity of water (0.44, P < 0.01) and substrate type (0.32, P < 0.05) were the statistically significant variables explaining the variability along the first DCA axis.

This present paper, focused on root crop communities of light soils, is a part of the wide range characteristics of segetal communities of the Podlaski Przełom Bugu (Podlasie Bug River Gorge) mesoregion. On the basis of 160 phytosociological relevés made according to the Braun-Blanquet method, phytocenoses representing the <i>Panico-Setarion</i> alliance were distinguished. Most often, patches of the association <i>Echinochloo-Setarietum</i> were recorded in the study area. Heterogeneous habitat conditions affect its floristic diversity. Two subassociations of the phytocenosis, divided according to the species composition into 9 lower syntaxa, were identified on light soils. The following subassociations were distinguished: <i>Echinochloo-Setarietum setarietosum glaucae</i> in a typical variant and a variant with <i>Juncus bufonius</i>, both with subvariants with <i>Digitaria ischaemum</i>, as well as a typical variant of <i>Echinochloo-Setarietum typicum</i>, a variant with <i>Juncus bufonius</i> and a subvariant with <i>Oxalis stricta</i> in the typical and wet variant. Another association found in root crops on light soils of the Podlaski Przełom Bugu mesoregion is <i>Digitarietum ischaemi</i>. Its patches were observed in cultivations on light, acidic, poor soils. The characteristic feature of this community is the occurrence of numerous acidophilous species. In habitat conditions typical for the Podlaski Przełom Bugu mesoregion, <i>Digitarietum ischaemi</i> is differentiated into the typical and wet variant. Quite frequent patches of the <i>Setaria pumila-Setaria viridis</i> community were noted in intermediate habitat conditions, between those characteristic for <i>Digitarietum ischaemi</i> and <i>Echinochloo-Setarietum</i>.

The management of surface watercourses is an urgent scientific task. The article presents the results of statistical processing of long-term monthly data of field observations of hydrological and hydrochemical parameters along the Upper Yerga small river in the Vologda region. Sampling estimates of statistical parameters are obtained, autocorrelation and correlation analyzes are performed. The limiting periods from the point of view of pollution for water receivers receiving wastewater from drained agricultural areas are identified.

Plant communities with reed domination (Phragmites australis agg.) occupy the large areas in the Lower Volga Valley and especially in the river delta. We have set the task to reveal the diversity of these communities in the Lower Volga Valley. For this purpose, we applied the database that is registered in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD) under the EU-RU–002 index (http://www.givd.info/) and includes 14871 relevés made during the period from 1924 to 2013. Communities with the dominance of reed were defined as such, if the coverage of this plant was more than 50 %. We have found 375 such relevés in the database. At first, one basal community, 3 associations and 3 subassociations with domination of Phragmites australis agg. were distinguished in the Lower Volga Valley. All processing and analysis of relevés were performed using the software package JUICE 7.0. (Tichý, 2002). The «Cocktail» method was applied to establish the sociological groups that indicate environmental conditions (Bruelheide, 2000). The expert system for selection from the database of relevés by means of these groups was created. It is allowed us to ascribe relevés to earlier distinguished associations, subassociations and basal community. 171 relevés have been identified by the expert system and they were assigned to association, subassociation or the basal community. 204 relevés were not referred to any association, subassociation or the basal community. We wanted to answer the question: are there among these 204 relevés, which could be interpreted as the new syntaxa, giving them the proper ecological characteristics? For this purpose, the cluster analysis of 204 relevés has been carried out. The optimal level of clustering was determined by calculating the index of “crispness of classification” (Botta-Dukát et al., 2005). The greatest “crispness of classification” was reached at allocation of 13 clusters. Consideration of the floristic composition of allocated groups had shown that 11 of them were the transitional plant communities among the earlier established syntaxa. Only two clusters were differed in rather original structure that we could explain by the influence of environment factors. We have identified them as new associations Rubio tataricae-Phragmitetum australis and Cynancho acuti-Phragmitetum australis. All associations with the dominance of Phragmites australis agg. distinguished in the Lower Volga Valley were included in the alliance Phragmition communis Koch 1926, order Phragmitetalia communis Koch 1926. In literary sources from the ecological point of view these syntaxa are defined as the wetland communities, which are closely linked to water bodies (Šumberová et al., 2011; Ermakov, 2012). However, in many cases this definition does not correspond to the ecology of plant communities with the dominance of reed in the lower reaches of the Volga River. Ecotops of these communities are flooded for up to 2–3 months in a year and then they dry out. In the autumn, the ground water level can drop to a depth of one meter (Golub et al., 2011). The plant satellites of the reed here are often mesophytic plants such as Rubus caesius, Calamagrostis epigeios, Phalaris arundinacea, Rubia tatarica, Althaea officinalis, and Rumex stenophyllus. Therefore, the inclusion of phytocoenosises with domination of the reed in the lower reaches of the Volga River in the alliance Phragmition communis is rather relative. A correct placement of these plant communities in the system of vegetation syntaxa of the arid areas can be made only if it is based on original data obtained from much bigger territory than the Lower Volga Valley. In future geobotanical studies, it is desirable to divide the aggregation of Phragmites australis agg. into smaller species taxa.

The study of ecological succession to determine how plant communities re-assemble after a natural or anthropogenic disturbance has always been an important topic in ecology. The understanding of these processes forms part of the new theories of community assembly and species coexistence, and is attracting attention in a context of expanding human impacts. Specifically, new successional studies provide answers to different mechanisms of community assemblage, and aim to define the importance of deterministic or stochastic processes in the succession dynamic. Biotic limits, which depend directly on biodiversity (i.e., species competition), and abiotic filtering, which depends on the environment, become particularly important when they are exceeded, making the succession process more complicated to reach the previous disturbance stage. Plant functional traits (PFTs) are used in secondary succession studies to establish differences between abandonment stages or to compare types of vegetation or flora, and are more closely related to the functioning of plant communities. Dispersal limitation is a PFT considered an important process from a stochastic point of view because it is related to the establishing of plants. Related to it the soil seed bank plays an important role in secondary succession because it is essential for ecosystem functioning. Soil compounds and microbial community are important variables to take into account when studying any succession stage. Chronosequence is the best way to study the whole process at different time scales. Finally, our objective in this review is to show how past studies and new insights are being incorporated into the basis of classic succession. To further explore this subject we have chosen old-field recovery as an example of how a number of different plant communities, including annual and perennial grasslands and shrublands, play an important role in secondary succession.
