The research takes Taiwan's machine tool industry as the research subject, and gains an insight into the possible impacts of “Industry 4.0”, “Belt and Road Initiative” as well as “Made in China 2025” on the development of machine tool industry in Taiwan. Lastly, it is hoped that the machine tool makers in Taiwan will be able to develop and grasp market trends in line with their needs and the status quo in order to achieve direct and indirect operational results. Based on the research results, this research will propose conclusions and provide relevant recommendations on specific and substantial business improvement and policy formulation for the machine tool industry, relevant government agencies and academic research.

Significance Since he took office, private firms have suffered most from attempts to rein in corporate debt, while state firms have benefited from flagship initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and Made In China 2025. Now, a series of reforms and assertive regulatory actions is targeting sectors dominated by private firms, including internet platforms and education. Impacts Private firms will further increase their presence in the Chinese economy, although at a slower pace than before. More emphasis will be put on support for small and medium-sized firms as major employers and drivers of economic growth. Preferential treatment of state-owned enterprises will remain a pillar of government policy.

Hyperloop is a proposed very high-speed ground transportation system for both passenger and freight that has the potential to be revolutionary, and which has attracted much attention in the last few years. The concept was introduced in its modern form relatively recently, yet substantial progress has been made in the past years, with research and development taking place globally, from several Hyperloop companies and academics. This study examined the status of Hyperloop development and identified issues and challenges by means of a systematic review that analyzed 157 documents from the Scopus database on Hyperloop since 2014. Following that, a taxonomy of topics from scientific research was built under different physical and operational clusters. The findings could be of help to transportation academics and professionals who are interested in the developments in the field, and form the basis for policy decisions for the future implementation of Hyperloop.

The machine tool industry is comprised of high-tech production and processing equipment that combines various software and hardware functions such as machinery, motor, optoelectronics, new materials and automatic control. The demands for machine tools has been continuously developed and expanded, from the early mold and home appliance industries to today’s automotive, aerospace and 3C industries. Furthermore, it has gradually extended to emerging industries such as biomedical, green energy and space, indicating that the machine tool industry plays an important role in overall national industries. Taiwan’s Machine Tool Industry is world-renowned and enjoys a complete vertical division of labor. Based on the production and sales statistics in 2016 and 2017 issued by Taiwan Machine Tool & Accessory Builders’ Association (2018), this study conducts comparison, analysis and exploration on the machine tool export model and major exporting countries, output conclusions and offer relevant recommendations on policy formulation and management that are proposed for the government and industry respectively.

In 1887 Dutch archivist A. J. Servaas van Rooijen published a transcript of a hand-written copy of an anonymous missive or letter, dated 1631, about a horrific famine and epidemic in Surat, India, and also an important description of the fauna of Mauritius. The missive may have been written by a lawyer acting on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). It not only gives details about the famine, but also provides a unique insight into the status of endemic and introduced Mauritius species, at a time when the island was mostly uninhabited and used only as a replenishment station by visiting ships. Reports from this period are very rare. Unfortunately, Servaas van Rooijen failed to mention the location of the missive, so its whereabouts remained unknown; as a result, it has only been available as a secondary source. Our recent rediscovery of the original hand-written copy provides details about the events that took place in Surat and Mauritius in 1631–1632. A full English translation of the missive is appended.

This paper gives an insight into the design process of a game adaptation of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart (1980). It outlines the challenges faced in attempting to reconcile the diverging qualities of lyrical poetry and digital games. In so doing, the paper examines the design decisions made in every segment of the game with a particular focus on the tension between the core concerns of the lyrical work being adapted and established tenets of game design.
