Language is an indispensable part of culture, and it is also a major carrier and medium of culture communication and transmission. Learning a foreign language means not only learning basic language knowledge, training and improving the ability of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, but enriching the cross-cultural awareness, cultivating cross-cultural communication competence and making the voice of native culture to communicate with the outside world. Thus, more and more educators and teachers at home and aboard have come to realize the importance of culture teaching in language learning. This paper focuses on inputting culture teaching in College English teaching integrated with specialty characteristics. The importance of culture teaching in college English teaching is analyzed and emphasized and several inspirational and referential strategies of culture teaching integrated with specialty characteristics are also provided.

Culture and language are inseparable, and cultures as groups adopt particular practices and norms of behavior. Culture teaching is a long and complex process concerning something more than language use itself. The two popular theories influencing practice today are the Constructivist and the Creative Constructionist approaches, and the technique for conveying cultural awareness is cultural assimilator, which has been designed for specific cultures around the world. Cross-cultural training can be used to promote cultural awareness, that is, sensitize people to the influence of culture on people’s values and behaviors and help them recognize and accept the existence of cultural differences.

The theoretical bases for the thesis are cross-cultural foreign language education theory, systemic education theory and multimedia-assisted English teaching theory. At first, the thesis summarizes and analyzes every unit involving cultural knowledge in College English textbook Oxford English used in Shanghai at present, demonstrating the feasibility of culture teaching in the elementary stage of College English. Then based on systemic teaching theories, the thesis analyzes teaching aim, teaching demand, teaching environment, teaching content, teaching strategies, evaluative strategies and implementation of culture teaching. Next, the thesis designs specific courses to match daily teaching activities by way of collecting culture teaching materials, designing culture teaching content and relevant teaching strategies. When designing specific courses, I take advice from experts and teachers on the front, develop three teaching cases and use courseware for teaching practice.

<p align="justify">In the context of English as a Lingua Franca, the localization of College English teaching has become an inevitable trend, which requires the teachers to reform the traditional teaching modes and adopt the localized teaching methods. Strategies can be taken to form localized teaching features by integrating the localized content into teaching and fostering the consciousness of localization. [Aim] The thesis is mainly about the great impact of cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning in web environment on students’ foreign language level, cultural awareness, affective factors, cooperation ability and independent ability. [Methods] We carry out practical activities of cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning by means of experimental teaching, video conference, E-mail inside and outside the class and giving priority to computer aided international cultural exchange form, as en elective course. [Result] Most students are positive about cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning under web environment in developing students’ cooperation ability, independent ability, affective factors and cultural awareness(M=4.059, SD=0.732). Subjects who are convinced to totally convinced that web learning environment greatly enhanced their cooperation ability and independent ability account for 92.4% and 78.2%; subjects who greatly approve that the web environment does good to learning account for 72.4%; students who agree the web environment could improve developing positive emotion in learning account for 88.8%; and also 84.1% of subjects believe that the web environment can improve their cultural awareness in language learning. [Conclusion] Cross-cultural communication and cooperative learning in web environment offer an ideal learning environment, increase opportunities to output or input, improve their cultural awareness in language learning, encourage and support affective factors beneficial to language learning and develop consciousness and ability of self-studying and cooperation.

It is an important part of improving college students’ comprehensive quality to cultivate cross-cultural communicative competence and it should be prioritized in college English teaching. Only with communicative competence can students effectively communicate and convey messages with others in English. This paper introduces cross-cultural communication and points out problems in it among non-English major students. It finally put forward some ways to improve their communicative competence.
