We use the model system ethanol–dodecane to demonstrate that giant critical fluctuations induced by easily accessible weak centrifugal fields as low as 2000g can be observed above the miscibility gap even far from the critical point of a binary liquid mixture.

The densities of binary mixtures of LiF with CsCl, KBr, RbBr, CsBr, KI, RbI and CsI have been investigated at 1093 - 1253 K. For the system LiF with KBr the dependence of the density on the temperature was measured up to the critical point, where the system became single-phased, and the critical behaviour was evaluated. The critical exponent of the order parameter, which was found from the density measurements, is close to 0.5.

A comparative survey is made of the neutron and light scattering techniques as applied to structural investigations in the vicinity of critical points in fluids. For neutron scattering as applied to fluctuations in binary mixtures, some criteria for a good contrast in order to optimize the scattering parameters such as the isotopic composition or the concentration are considered. This leads us to show how to write the partial structure factors in binary mixtures in order to remove the coupling between concentration and density fluctuations artificially introduced bv Bhatia and Thornton when the components are of different size. Finally, the amplitudes of the concentration fluctuations near a critical point are discussed.
