The article discusses one of the areas of the literary education of students in the initial stage of primary education: developing interest in reading. The timeliness and relevance of the problem treated determine the purpose of the study: based on international pedagogical experience, to define a model that increases the interest in reading within the competency-based approach, and highlight the role of motivation as a building element of this model. Analyses of the structure of motivation for reading, and the means of integration of cognitive processes and creativity when working with artistic text are done, being the aim to increase the motivation for reading of first to fourth grade students.

Expressiveness of the church modes is reflected in their character and association of certain states with a specific mode or single Gregorian composition which possesses unique expressiveness. An important characteristic of Gregorian chant on the tonality level is diatonic singing based on scales without chromatics, using only one semitone in the tetrachord whose musical structure reflects the expressiveness of Gregorian chant. Such expressiveness achieves character specificities which each mode respectively reflects. Various modal material in the form of typical melodic shifts in a certain composition conditions the expressiveness of Gregorian music and influences the listening impression and assessment of individual Gregorian tunes. The goal of this work is to examine primary education students' experiences of the expressiveness of Gregorian modes and explore if today's auditory sense accustomed to two tonality genres, major and minor, recognises what has been stored in the heritage of Gregorian chant repertoire for centuries. The research was conducted in the school year 2018/2019 with students of first, second, third and fourth grade of primary school (N=100). The results have shown that first and second grade students express higher auditory sensibility in recognizing specific characteristic of authentic Gregorian modes. Third and fourth grade students are audibly less open and perceptive considering tonal character differences in the authentic Gregorian modes. Key words: Gregorian chant; modality; old church scales; students in primary education

The study presents the results of a pilot program in which digital storytelling was used in order to inform fourth-grade students about bullying. The constructivist principles concerning the learning process, and in particular, the requirement of students' active participation, provided the necessary framework. Students created their own digital stories about bullying, while the researcher, although present, avoided to intervene, to guide or to lecture students to a great extent. The intervention was short in duration and easily applied, without altering the school's timetable. Qualitative analysis of the data indicates that, through their digital stories, students were able to grasp the main aspects of bullying and how they should react, but the role of bystanders was unclear to them. The results of the study might prove useful in the formation of a more comprehensive anti-bullying program.

A major goal of the mathematics curriculum for third- and fourth-grade students is the development of numeration and computation skills. These skills are frequently maintained through routine drill. Most gifted students have a strong dislike for drill, preferring activities that require the use of higher cognitive processes. One way of providing for these students is to present them with problems related to the basic content that also enhance their problem-solving abilities.

This study was conducted with Croatian fourth grade students (N=691) that were divided into two groups. The characters presented in vignettes had some type of stigmatizing feature (e.g., Roma nationality, wheelchair usage, or being overweight) in the experimental group, while these features were left out in the comparison group. The first goal was to examine the impact of each stigmatizing feature on the non-acceptance of the described characters. The second goal was to analyze the relationship between the non-acceptance of the stigmatized character and children?s established contact with people with similar features, as well as the relationship between the afore-mentioned and the perceived attitudes of parents and friends. Roma ethnicity had a significant influence on non-acceptance of the character, while contact was related to an increase in the level of non-acceptance of the Roma character. Negative perceived opinions of friends regarding individuals with stigmatizing features (regardless of the type) were related to a lower level of acceptance of that character.

This study aimed to investigate the role of emotional intelligence as a mediating variable in intrinsic motivation prediction of the ability to solve mathematical problems among fourth-grade students in the Sultanate of Oman.  The study sample consisted of 183 male and female students from six schools of the first cycle of basic education. The study tools are: Goleman's Emotional Intelligence Scale, the Intrinsic Motivation Scale of Lepper, and a mathematical problem-solving test prepared by the researchers. The content validity, and internal consistency reliability of the three tools were measured. The results found a weak and negative correlation between the ability to solve mathematical problems and each of: emotional intelligence, intrinsic motivation, and weak and positive correlation between emotional intelligence and intrinsic motivation. The results of this study also indicated that there is no mediating role for emotional intelligence in predicting intrinsic motivation in the ability to solve mathematical problems.   Received: 24 February 2021 / Accepted: 18 March 2021 / Published: 10 May 2021

Abstract:This research aimed to identify the role of parental involvement toward the students’ learning motivation. This research was conducted using quantitative method. The approach of this research was ex-post facto. The subjects of the research were 136 fourth grade students of elementary school. The instrument of the research used was questionnaire. The technique of data analysis was regression analysis. The result of the research showed that the parental involvement role on learning motivation reaches 39.7%. It could be concluded that the parental involvement role has positive effect on the fourth grade students’ learning motivation. This research showed the importance of parental involvement role towards students’ learning motivation. These results were expected to provide understanding from the school committee to assure parents that their supports were important in the process of their children education. Therefore, all parties should be involved in improving the quality of children's education.

This chapter describes the use of a computer-based animation and manipulatives to support learning and communication of mathematical thinking in a fourth-grade classroom. The educational animation called Overruled, part of the Math Snacks project (mathsnacks.com), was utilized to address the concept of length units. The animation describes a story in which the king and the queen from two different kingdoms (Kingopolis and Queentopia) fell in love and wanted to unite their territories by constructing a bridge. Engineers from each kingdom were responsible for building their side of the bridge. However, each kingdom has its own length unit. Authors follow research based recommendations to use the Overruled animation in mathematics activity with fourth-grade students.
