Widespread efforts to curb exclusionary and discriminatory discipline in schools have led to a growing focus on restorative approaches, a set of practices aimed at building strong in-school relationships and attachments, rather than pushing students out. This brief reviews research illustrating the benefits of these practices for student behavior, achievement, and attainment, and it elevates key lessons about what is needed to successfully implement restorative practices in schools.

Positive Climate

This theoretical study focuses on the school climate. In particular, it focuses on the phenomenon of the positive school climate and its specific areas. The aim of the paper is to describe important areas of the positive school climate based on the analysis of selected positive climate models (National School Climate Center, 2017; Rudasill et al., 2017; Thapa, Cohen, & Guffey et al., 2013; Grecmanová, 2008, etc.). The text describes basic concepts, such as classroom climate, learning climate, or teacher staff climate. Primarily, the school climate is defined and a brief description of the factors involved in its creation is provided. Subsequently, the text deals with the terminology concerning the positive climate, as there is a disunity in this area. A significant part of the contribution is devoted to specific models of positive school climate, where, based on various research surveys, areas are defined which are key for the positive climate. In the final part of the paper three important areas of the positive climate are described, which repeatedly appear in the selected models, so they can be considered important.

Substance Use Initiation

Initiation of substance use often starts during adolescence, with tobacco and alcohol use frequently preceding the use of marijuana and other illicit drugs. Studies suggest that a positive school climate may prevent substance use while promoting healthy student behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine the longitudinal associations between school climate and substance use initiation in a group of middle school students. Parallel latent growth curve modeling was used to examine changes among study variables longitudinally using a sample of 2,097 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students across 16 regional schools located in three counties in West Virginia. Results suggest that a positive school climate may prevent substance use initiation (β = −0.07 to −0.25, p < .01). However, perceptions of school climate decreased on their own over time (β = −0.28 to −0.66, p < .01). Furthermore, substance use initiation also increased as students grew older (β = 0.96 to 0.99, p < .01) and reduced the effects of school climate longitudinally (β = −0.07 to −0.24, p < .01). Early substance use initiation may be a warning sign of other underlying student issues and requires additional school support to foster student success. Findings suggest that a positive school climate may delay substance use initiation and promote school success. School climate may, therefore, be useful as an intervention to support school-based health promotion.

As community schools spread across the country, community school staff need effective approaches to engaging families and community-based partners. Such principles must be broadly applicable, given community schools’ mandate to adapt to different local contexts. Based on recent research on Baltimore City’s community schools, the authors highlight the approaches shared by community school coordinators in schools that have demonstrated comparatively high student attendance and positive school climate.
