Abstract The Early Cretaceous Baerzhe deposit in Inner Mongolia, Northeast China, hosts a world-class resource of rare earth elements (REEs), niobium, zirconium, and beryllium. In contrast to previous interpretations of the deposit as a multiphase, miaskitic alkaline granite, our observations of the relationships of various rock phases, the textural features and chemical evolution of amphibole, and the distribution of primary and secondary mineral assemblages suggest that the igneous phases evolved from a hypersolvus porphyritic granite, through a variably altered transsolvus granite, both of which are miaskitic, to a strongly altered, agpaitic, transsolvus granite that contained primary elpidite. All of these phases share a common igneous lineage. The Baerzhe deposit is characterized by five stages of rare metal mineralization, starting with the magmatic crystallization of elpidite (stage I). Elpidite was subsequently hydrothermally replaced by zircon and quartz to form pseudomorphs in stage II. Stage II is also characterized by Na metasomatism (albite and aegirine alteration of alkali feldspar and amphibole, respectively) and by snowball quartz that contains inclusions of albite, aegirine, and zircon. Sodium metasomatism, Zr mineralization, and snowball quartz are restricted to the agpaitic rocks. REEs, Nb, and Be occur as a variety of minerals that are disseminated through all the altered rocks and were precipitated in three sequential stages (stages III-V), with the formation of heavy REE-dominant phases generally preceding light REE-dominant phases. Moderate to pervasive hematization, which altered much of the transsolvus miaskitic granite and all the agpaitic granite, initiated late in stage II and accompanied most of the REE-Nb-Be mineralization in stage III. The stage-III mineralization, represented by hingganite-(Y), hingganite-(Ce), aeschynite-(Y), and columbite-(Fe), developed in two substages, with hingganite-(Y) preceding hingganite-(Ce); these REE-Nb-Be minerals are mainly contained in quartz-rich pseudomorphs (REE-Nb-Be–rich pseudomorphs) but also occur as partial replacement of earlier minerals. Stages IV and V represent a transition from F-absent assemblages that are characterized by euxenite-group minerals and monazite-(Ce) in stage IV-A, to light REE and F-rich minerals: bastnäsite-(Ce) in stage IV-B and fluocerite-(Ce) and synchysite-(Ce) in stage V. The low REE, Nb, and Be concentrations in amphibole and the fact that REE-Nb-Be assemblages never contain zircon as a constituent preclude leaching of preexisting amphibole or zirconosilicates as significant sources of REEs, Nb, or Be. Rather, these elements may have inherently been present in magmatic-hydrothermal fluids or have been leached from crystallized fluoride melts.

Fifty-six patients with ovarian cancer (three stage IC, nine stage II, 33 stage III and II stage IV) were treated with carboplatin 350 mg m−2 i.v. day 1 and chlorambucil orally 0.15 mg kgm−1 days 1–7 inclusive, repeated every 28 days for eight courses. The regimen was well tolerated and was virtually free of nephro- and neurotoxicity. Grade III or IV hematology toxicity occurred in 18 patients but only 31 or 330 courses administered were delayed. Of 40 assessable patients eight achieved a clinical/radiologic complete response and 17 a clinical/radiologic partial response. Actuarial survival at 50 months was 65% for stage II patients, 27% for stage III patients and no stage IV patients survived beyond 20 months. Forty-two per cent of patients with residual disease less 2 cm survived 50 months, compared with 44% of patients with moderate volume (2–5 cm) residual disease and 6% of patients with bulk residual disease. This is an active, well tolerated regimen. However, only patients with small volume residual disease have a significant chance of prolonged survival.

The gravitropism of a mature stage IV Phycomyces sporangiophore has a shorter and more uniform latency if the sporangiophore is exposed horizontally to gravity during its earlier development (stage II and stage III). This early exposure to an altered gravitational orientation causes the sporangiophore to develop a gravireceptor as it matures to stage IV and resumes elongation. A technique has been developed to observe the spatial relationship between the vacuole and the protoplasm of a living sporangiophore and to show the reorganization caused by this exposure to altered gravity. Possible gravireceptor mechanisms are discussed.

Fortyfour patients with chronically obstructed peripheral arteries have been treated intravenously with brinase. Twentyfour of these patients had rest pain or gangrene (Stage III or IV) and 20 were claudicants (Stage II).Assessment before and after treatment was by clinical evaluation, blood pressure measurement in the limbs, and C-W ultrasound scanning of the peripheral arteries (Three arterial segments in each limb). Individual dosage requirement was decided by the level of brinase inhibitors in plasma. The more severely diseased patients were anti coagulated with Warfarin. The follow-up period from treatment extends from six months to three years. At the end of brinase treatment, good clinical improvement was obtained in 11/20 Stage IT, 10/12 Stage III, and 10/12 Stage IV. The arm-leg blood pressure gradient before treatment in Stage II was 88±41 mmHg, in Stage III 108±43 mmHg, and in Stage IV 129 ±45 mmHg. In patients responding to brinase treatment (27/44) a post-treatment gradient of 44±27 mmHg was recorded. In patients who failed to improve the higher gradient of 81 ±49 mmHg was retained.C-W ultrasound scanning of 228 arterial segments before treatment showed that 67 segments were occluded, 101 stenosed and 60 segments without significant lesions. Following treatment 19 segments remained occluded, 122 showed stenosis and 87 were without significant lesions. The post-treatment figures indicate a reduction in severity of arterial lesions.

Bladder Cancer (BC) is a common disease worldwide. Chronic inflammation is one of the key mechanisms for the development of BC. This study enrolled 40 patients. Preoperative plasma levels of IL-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12β, TNF-α and IFN-γ were determined by ELISA. In our study, we observed diverse changes in the levels of cytokines in patients with BC Stage I, II, III and IV. The levels of IL-1β was increased for stage I, stage II, and stage III. The level of TNF-α was increased for stage II, stage III, stage IV. The levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12β were increased in patients with stage III and IV only. The levels of IFN- γ declined for stage II, stage III and stage IV with the lowest levels in patients with Stage IV. In our study, we investigated alteration in levels of Th-1 and Th-2-like cytokine profile, but some deficiency in Th1- status discovered in patients with BC.

PURPOSE: Previous studies demonstrated that chemotherapy with either cisplatin, vincristine, and fluorouracil (regimen A) or cisplatin and continuous infusion doxorubicin (regimen B) improved survival in children with hepatoblastoma. The current trial is a randomized comparison of these two regimens. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients (N = 182) were enrolled onto study between August 1989 and December 1992. After initial surgery, patients with stage I–unfavorable histology (UH; n = 43), stage II (n = 7), stage III (n = 83), and stage IV (n = 40) hepatoblastoma were randomized to receive regimen A (n = 92) or regimen B (n = 81). Patients with stage I–favorable histology (FH; n = 9) were treated with four cycles of doxorubicin alone. RESULTS: There were no events among patients with stage I-FH disease. Five-year event-free survival (EFS) estimates were 57% (SD = 5%) and 69% (SD = 5%) for patients on regimens A and B, respectively (P = .09) with a relative risk of 1.54 (95% confidence interval, 0.93 to 2.5) for regimen A versus B. Toxicities were more frequent on regimen B. Patients with stage I-UH, stage II, stage III, or stage IV disease had 5-year EFS estimates of 91% (SD = 4%), 100%, 64% (SD = 5%), and 25% (SD = 7%), respectively. Outcome was similar for either regimen within disease stages. At postinduction surgery I, patients with stage III or IV disease who were found to be tumor-free had no events; those who had complete resections achieved a 5-year EFS of 83% (SD = 6%); other patients with stage III or IV disease had worse outcome. CONCLUSION: Treatment outcome was not significantly different between regimen A and regimen B. Excellent outcome was achieved for patients with stage I-UH and stage II hepatoblastoma and for subsets of patients with stage III disease. New treatment strategies are needed for the majority of patients with advanced-stage hepatoblastoma.

A comparison was made of morphological changes and successive, mainly biochemical, marker events for sporulation in 14 asporogenous mutants. The morphological and biochemical sequences are linked so that arrested development in one is accompanied by corresponding effects in the other. Thus mutants that fail to produce both protease and antibiotic do not progress beyond stage 0, formation of alkaline phosphatase appears to be associated with the transition from stage II to stage III and glucose dehydrogenase with that from stage III to stage IV. Stage II mutants may produce `pygmy' cells or other bizarre cell-division forms. The biochemical sequence is dependent in the sense that if the occurrence of any one event is blocked that of all the succeeding events is also blocked. This has implications for biochemical models that have been proposed to explain the temporal sequence observed in spore development.
