Student team presentations are commonly utilised in tertiary science courses to help students develop skills in communication, teamwork and literature research, but they are subject to constraints arising from class size, available time, and limited facilities. In an alternative approach, student teams present online using a variety of tools, such as screencast and blended media, but it is not clear whether this offers an authentic alternative to in-class experience. In this study, the two modes of presentation were compared in terms of student perceptions and academic performance. A survey probed students’ familiarity with digital technology, presentation anxiety, and differential perceptions of the two modes. Aside from a confirmation bias, no significant difference was found between those who presented in class and online. In a notable exception, a clear asymmetry appeared when students were asked to choose a mode for a future presentation: none of the online presenters opted for the in-class mode while a third of in-class presenters selected the online mode. Presentation anxiety was similar for in-class and online presenters and was insensitive to gender and familiarity with English. No significant difference was detected between the modes in terms of academic performance.

Welcome to the final edition of the Journal of University Learning and Teaching Practice for 2017. We would like to acknowledge the significant contributions of our five Associate Editors - Dr Peter Copeman, University of Canberra, Dr Jo-Anne Kelder, University of Tasmania, Dr Tracey Kuit, University of Wollongong, Dr Morag McFadyen, Robert Gordon University, and Dr Vikki Pollard, Deakin University. The first two papers in this issue focus explicitly on assessment activities. In the first paper, Houston and Thompson describe and evaluate an assessment design that aimed to integrate formative assessment with summative assessment in a capstone paramedic subject. The assessment design provided students with feedback tailored to their unique learning needs. Students perceived this assessment as valuable and effective as well as promoting their readiness to practice. In the second paper Braun compares online and in class presentation assessments exploring student perceptions and academic performance with regard to these two assessment modes. This comparison identified that there was no significant difference between the two modes and there is a suggestion that online presentations might even be favoured by students.

The COVID-19 pandemic, and the containment measures adopted by the different governments, led to a boom in online education as a necessary response to the crisis posed against the education system worldwide. This study compares the academic performance of students between face-to-face and online modalities in relation to the exceptional situation between the months of March and June 2020. The academic performance in both modalities of a series of subjects taught in the Psychology Degree at the European University of the Atlantic (Santander, Spain) was taken into account. The results show that student performance during the final exam in the online modality is significantly lower than in the face-to-face modality. However, grades from the continuous evaluation activities are significantly higher online, which somehow compensates the overall grade of the course, with no significant difference in the online mode with respect to the face-to-face mode, even though overall performance is higher in the latter. The conditioning factors and explanatory arguments for these results are also discussed.

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society has recognized that, in order to properly prepare students for teamwork in the workplace, team-building experiences are an indispensable part of education (Stone, Moroney, & Wortham, 2006). Panels held at previous HFES meetings have identified approaches to instructing student teams, developing effective teams, and utilizing peer ratings. One hundred fifty-five students were surveyed concerning methods used to plan and communicate with other team members, best and worst team task experiences, and what was liked best and least about working in teams. Responses indicated that, while many students enjoy the collaborative and social aspects of working in teams, many are displeased with the distribution of workload between team members, procrastination by team members, and the difficulty of scheduling meetings. Implications for instructors and recommendations for tools designed to enhance student team experiences are described.

In a flipped classroom, students engage in active learning during class time and have individual information‑transmission outside class time. University students need to complete the pre/post‑class activities to fully benefit from flipped classroom. It is important that teachers adopt practical methods including teacher‑student out‑of‑classroom communication (OCC) to help students manage their time effectively and stay on task. This research examines the practice of OOC in a flipped first‑year postgraduate Business Law course at an Australian university that comprises a large overseas student cohort. By means of a questionnaire, the researcher collected data about student perceptions of OCC, their motives for engaging in OCC, and the change of the motives in a flipped classroom. Student demographics, online participation, and academic performance data were exported from the university database. The student answers, participation, and performance were measured and compared with t‑tests. The preliminary results show that in a flipped classroom, students were more motivated to engage in OCC. Moreover, the short‑term online participation improved for the students who were communicated by the teacher outside classroom. However, an analysis of the data indicated no statistically significant difference in students’ academic performance. In the concluding sections of this paper, the limitations of this study are acknowledged, followed by several recommendations for future research.

ObjectivesThe study aimed to provide an association between dysmenorrhoea and academic performance among university students in Ethiopia. Further, the study attempts to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of dysmenorrhoea.Design and methodInstitution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 1 April to 28 April 2019. A semistructured and pretested self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Binary logistic regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance were performed to model dysmenorrhoea and academic performance, respectively.Setting and participantsEthiopia (2019: n=647 female university students).OutcomesThe primary outcome is dysmenorrhoea, which has been defined as painful menses that prevents normal activity and requires medication. The self-reported cumulative grade point average of students was used as a proxy measure of academic performance, which is the secondary outcome.ResultsThe prevalence of dysmenorrhoea was 317 (51.5%). The educational status of father (adjusted OR (AOR) (95% CI) 2.64 (1.04 to 6.66)), chocolate consumption (AOR (95% CI) 3.39 (95% 1.28 to 8.93)), daily breakfast intake (<5 days/week) (AOR (95% CI) 0.63 (0.42 to 0.95)), irregular menstrual cycle AOR (95% CI) 2.34 (1.55 to 3.54)) and positive family history of dysmenorrhoea AOR (95% CI) 3.29 (2.25 to 4.81)) had statistically significant association with dysmenorrhoea. There was no statistically significant difference in academic performance among students with and without dysmenorrhoea (F (3611)=1.276, p=0.28)).ConclusionsDysmenorrhoea was a common health problem among graduating University students. However, it has no statistically significant impact on academic performance. Reproductive health officers should educate and undermine the negative academic consequences of dysmenorrhoea to reduce the physical and psychological stress that happens to females and their families.

Research Problem. This article examines the practice and shows the theory and outcome of the study of whether there is a significant relationship of students' academic performance depending on their learning and teaching style, whether there is a significant difference in students' grades depending on their teachers' teaching styles, and whether there is a significant difference between students' academic performance. The purpose of the study focuses on gaining new knowledge about the relationship between the learning and teaching style of a university instructor and student's academic performance. The methodology, methods, and techniques of the study. This study used the Grasch-Richman Learning Styles Questionnaire, which includes tools to assess both learning styles and teaching styles. Our study was designed as a survey study (suitable for determining the existing situation without intervention) and used a quantitative research methodology. The study also used a teaching style inventory method. Results. The results of the study showed that student achievement scores did not change significantly based on their teaching styles; a significant difference was found between student achievement and the correspondence between faculty teaching style and student teaching style. Scientific novelty/practical significance. The new knowledge gained allows us to consider the implications of how emerging learning opportunities relate to student preparation in higher education and teacher level support. Conclusions and Recommendations. The results of our study confirm that learning, teaching styles, and student achievement are interrelated, but in examining these three variables, other variables such as the specific difficulties encountered in teaching a particular subject, the age group of students, and the context of the school must also be considered. There is no "bad" style of qualified teaching. It should not, however, interfere with a teacher's professional development. New knowledge about teaching/learning styles can be useful for beginning university teachers as well as for their students.

Marketing curricula are experiencing a digital disruption as e-books and other electronic educational resources replace print textbooks. This study investigates student perceptions about the effectiveness of print textbooks and e-books. Specifically, we focus on the perceived effectiveness of e-books and the impact on student engagement. A field-based quasi-experiment was conducted with a sample of 259 students in the Fall semester, and a follow-up sample of 395 students in the Spring semester. The results show a diverse impact of e-books on student engagement. Some aspects of engagement are positively affected while other aspects of student engagement exhibit a neutral or negative leaning impact. The findings also reflect significant variation in e-book effectiveness depending on the course. Finally, we find that e-books moderate the relationship between textbook effectiveness and academic performance engagement. Highly effective e-books result in higher levels of academic performance engagement. Collectively these findings shed light on the current situation and provide a foundation for additional research to further our understanding about e-book effectiveness and its relationship to student engagement.

AbstractIntroduction:Colleges and universities are experiencing increasing demand for online courses in many healthcare disciplines, including emergency medical services (EMS). Development and implementation of online paramedic courses with the quality of education experienced in the traditional classroom setting is essential in order to maintain the integrity of the educational process. Currently, there is conflicting evidence of whether a significant difference exists in student performance between online and traditional nursing and allied health courses. However, there are no published investigations of the effectiveness of online learning by paramedic students.Hypothesis:Performance of paramedic students enrolled in an online, undergraduate, research methods course is equivalent to the performance of students enrolled in the same course provided in a traditional, classroom environment.Methods:Academic performance, learning styles, and course satisfaction surveys were compared between two groups of students. The course content was identical for both courses and taught by the same instructor during the same semester. The primary difference between the traditional course and the online course was the method of lecture delivery. Lectures for the on-campus students were provided live in a traditional classroom setting using PowerPoint slides. Lectures for the online students were provided using the same PowerPoint slides with prerecorded streaming audio and video.Results:A convenience sample of 23 online and 10 traditional students participated in this study. With the exception of two learning domains, the two groups of students exhibited similar learning styles as assessed using the Grasha-Riechmann Student Learning Style Scales instrument. The online students scored significantly lower in the competitive and dependent dimensions than did the on-campus students. Academic performance was similar between the two groups. The online students devoted slightly more time to the course than did the campus students, although this difference did not reach statistical significance. In general, the online students believed the online audio lectures were more effective than the traditional live lectures.Conclusion:Distance learning technology appears to be an effective mechanism for extending didactic paramedic education off-campus, and may be beneficial particularly to areas that lack paramedic training programs or adequate numbers of qualified instructors.

A statistically significant difference in mean values between two laboratory quantitation methods is interpreted as a bias. Sometimes such a difference is so minute that it does not constitute any practical concern. An alternative approach is to test statistically whether the two methods are close enough, not for equality. This is to look at the confidence interval of the mean method difference and does not entail any additional statistical tests.
