Since 2000, research on female entrepreneurship has evolved substantially; however, some areas of research remain underinvestigated. In particular, to grasp the facets of this growing phenomenon, analysis of the characteristics of female firms in countries that are different from the USA and UK and the consideration of the embeddedness of entrepreneurship in family contexts are strongly needed. Thus, these two areas represent research gaps that this paper aims to address by analysing the influence that the family and work–life balance mechanisms have on the performance of 200 Italian female service firms. Contrary to the authors' hypotheses, the results show that family does not influence these firms' performance, and data from work–life balance mechanisms confirm these results.

The fast paced lifestyle in the technologically advanced era, brings many challenges in the field of work-family balance. For a good business performance, customer satisfaction and a positive impact on the environment, it is important for a company to have satisfied employees. Many successful companies are aware that the key to having productive and satisfied employees is also to understand and promote workfamily balance. This awareness is slowly growing in Slovenian companies and therefore the acquisition of the Family-Friendly Company certificate has been actively pursued since 2006. With the help of the Family-Friendly Company certificate, companies are able to retain the best talents and gain the moral loyalty of employees. Based on the study of literature and previous research, the article presents the situation in the field of work-life balance in Slovenia. The results of a survey conducted in a selected company are presented in the following article. The results of the analysis showed that the employees of the studied company are on average satisfied with the familyfriendly measures and that there is a difference in the success of work-life balance according to gender. Based on the results, possible improvements in the studied area are also suggested.

Interest in issues surrounding work–life balance has increased in recent years. Some studies stress the consequences of work–life balance, while others put emphasis on the ways in which people manage to keep the balance. We decided to combine both points of view. The presented study focuses on personal strategies for combining family and work roles and their consequences for maintaining the work–family balance and satisfaction with work and quality of life. There were 289 participants in the study. The instruments used were Work–Family Linkage Questionnaire, Work–Family Fit Questionnaire, Satisfaction of Life Scale and Job Satisfaction Scale. The procedure of adapting the Work–Family Linkage Questionnaire (WFLQ) into Polish was conducted to enable the use of the tool in Poland for the first time. Good psychometric properties of WFLQ were confirmed. The results showed that the individual strategy for combining family and work roles determines the work–home balance, as well as satisfaction with life and career. For example, the amount of negative spillover from home and from work was correlated positively with role conflict and negatively with satisfaction with life, while the amount of positive spillover correlated positively with facilitation and experienced satisfaction with life.

PurposeThis study examined the interceding influence of work–life balance (WLB) among library staff at the Kenneth Dike Library and its implication for the provision of information. The research sought to respond to the following questions: the effect of demographic variables on the WLB of librarians and their perceptions of WLB within the intimate environment.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a positivist research paradigm because the nature of the research revealed a single social reality which can be measured quantitatively, using a reliable instrument such as a questionnaire. The total sampling technique was used to zero in on the staff of the library, in which the entire library population was included in the study.FindingsThe findings suggest that male librarians enjoy a better WLB than their female counterparts. Also, the results indicate that librarians, irrespective of their marital status, focused on job-related activities minding their marital status and therefore, marital status could influence the WLB of librarians. Similarly, priority is not being given to their work, to the detriment of caring for the family.Research limitations/implicationsThe study suggests that age causes the WLB to change, the implication being that an ageing workforce has an impact on adaptation, output and innovation.Originality/valueThis paper sheds light on the WLB among librarians at the Kenneth Dike Library (KDL); therefore, information acquired from this study is imaginative and valuable to understand better how information professionals react to official and personal engagement.
