This chapter uses cognitive theory of information processing to demonstrate the role of visual learning in the context of reading and writing. According to the theory, individuals do not take a singular approach to processing information. Rather, they experience the world through visual and verbal channels. Information is then organized by working memory into more comprehensive models—the visuo-spatial sketchpad and the phonological loop. The author considers pedagogical strategies for writing instruction that rely on the multimedia principle, which states that our minds work best when learning combines the visual with the aural. The specific mission of the chapter is to show how the multimedia principle can benefit writing instruction in three different contexts: 1) reading and writing comprehension, 2) narrative writing, and 3) grammar usage. The chapter concludes with the suggestion that learning through images is not just a cultural phenomenon, but also a scientific one.

The objective of the study is to expound the importance of behavior contract and class routine activity as the first initiative step to reduce students’ misbehavior and improve their interaction among peers. The researcher conducted mini experiment of “behavior contract” and “class routine” in teaching primary students as a part of learning process in Intensive English Course (IEC) as one of non-formal English institutions. 16 students between 10 to 12 years old participated in the research. For data collection, this paper relies on participant observation, checklist, interviews and literature reviews. The researcher acted as a key instrument to observe, take note and check the lists of behavior contract agreed and signed between teacher and students with parents’ prior notice. The research has revealed that the students have shown better improvement in term of behavior and attitudes. They also exhibit better interaction and improve their English-speaking skill since all students study English. To infer, the role of teachers who become ultimate keys to quality learning and education in disseminating the idea of respect, character building for others has a profound effect on students’ behavior and attitudes so as to have mutual understanding.

Essential for the individual’s successful adaptation in the society, text comprehension is a cognitive activity more and more complicated to the child (Blanc & Brouillet, 2005). However, these understanding difficulties get better with the age (Boisclair, Makdissi, Sanchez, Fortier, & Sirois, 2004; Segui & Léveillé, 1977). The present study, working on the principle that illustration is beneficial to the comprehension process (Ammari, 2015; Blanc & Tapiero, 2002; Gyselinck, 1995, 1996; Gyselinck & Tardieu, 1993; Reinwein, 1988; Rizk Batien, 2009; Vezin, 1986), has proposed to study the effect, the role of this one on comprehension to the children through tales. Two groups of students aged from 7 to 9 years old read two short stories, illustrated or not. Two tests were also submitted to them: the task of understanding and highlighting important words and/or ideas. The results obtained show clearly the positive effect of the illustration on the students’ performances and testify thus to the fact that illustration can be used as a palliative to the understanding difficulties of to the children.

The magazine of Milan Enlightenment had an open attitude to the new knowledge spreading through Europe and was committed towards the dissemination of the so-called «useful studies». This implied that themes related to medicine were widely present among its articles, which recognized the central role of medicine in social life and presented it as both the inescapable premise of the ‘well-being’ of individuals and the population at large, and the aim of any good administration. Il Caffè decisively stands for ‘new’ medicine, the one that best takes into account the progress of studies, and that values the constant updating of its practitioners; medicine to be considered as science rather than experience. Thanks to all these elements, together with its inclusion in the complex system of scientific knowledge (inherently subject to constant verification), the lively formula of erudite entertainment opens, in more than one case, to concrete results, as in Pietro Verri’s article Sull’innesto del vaiuolo (On smallpox grafting); here, the author resolutely places the Caffè in favor of the still suspect practice of inoculation. Furthermore, even though it is Pietro Verri again who offers a wide-ranging nomenclature framework (with the article La medicina), undoubtedly most of the contributors are involved in dealing with these issues with an almost revolutionary narrative writing; certainly the model is English educational journalism, but with an incisiveness that also pays attention to the emerging sensiblerie, especially the «diseases of imagination» and those from which «more or less every man suffers without exactly distinguishing the cause».

AbstractSchool psychologists have a unique and multifaceted role within schools and must work with a variety of stakeholders. Therefore, it is important to explore and understand the perspectives of other educational professionals regarding the roles of school psychologists. This study examined the perspectives of principals (N = 21), teachers (N = 86), and school psychologists (N = 81) regarding what they believe should be the role of school psychologists. Participants were working in Catholic, Independent, and Government primary and secondary schools across Victoria, Australia. Results revealed both similarities and differences between the three groups regarding perspectives about school psychologists' role. For instance, the three groups shared similar perspectives that school psychologists should: (a) conduct research on issues relevant to the school, (b) be up-to-date on relevant research, (c) conduct psychological assessments, (d) provide counselling to students, (e) organise group programs for students, (f) organise workshops and provide information to teachers on issues of students' welfare and (g) inform primary students' parents of their child's participation in counselling. However, the three groups also differed in their perspectives about some aspects of the school psychologists' role. It was notable that each of the differences in perceptions between the groups had implications for potential ethical dilemmas, for instance: (a) boundaries, (b) dual relationship, (c) confidentiality/who is the client? and (d) informed consent. Implications for practice and scholarship in the field of school psychology are discussed.
