Abstract Background Mismatch negativity (MMN) is an event-related potential component when a sequence of relatively standard stimuli is interrupted by the infrequent presentation of deviant stimuli. MMN is known to be associated with neuro-cognition and functional outcomes. Also, abnormally decreased MMN has often been reported in schizophrenia. Remission and recovery rates are related to the neuro-cognition of patients with schizophrenia. The present study explored the relationship of MMN with remission in patients with schizophrenia. Methods Forty patients with schizophrenia were recruited and divided into two groups, with or without remission, according to the Remission in Schizophrenia Working Group criteria (RSWGcr). For assessments of symptom severity, cognitive function and functional outcome, scale such as Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), K-WAIS-IV, and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) were measured. MMN of the patients were evaluated at the frontocentral site. A regression analysis was used to identify the factors that significantly predicted symptom improvement and remission including MMN at frontal site assessed at baseline, and anticipated clinical variables as predictive factors. Results MMN amplitudes in frontal sites were further decreased in the groups without remission compared to the groups with remission. MMN amplitude was significantly correlated with measures of symptom change and functional outcome measurements in patients with schizophrenia. Regression analysis revealed that symptom severity and MMN significantly predicted remission in patients with schizophrenia. Symptom improvement significantly predicted PANSS at baseline, illness duration, and antipsychotic dose, as did MMN amplitude at frontal site. Discussion This study explored the relationship of MMN with remission in patients with schizophrenia. The remitted patients with schizophrenia showed larger MMN amplitude in frontal electrode site than those of non-remitted patients. MMN in frontal sites was correlated with symptom improvement and functional outcomes through PANSS and GAF scales. The present study found that MMN was significantly correlated with variables related to remission such as PANSS and GAF evaluated at 6 months later. MMN indexes appears to be a promising candidate for predicted factor of remission of schizophrenia.

There has been constant debate about the predictability of the security markets. We examine the relationship between the prices of a stock and its convertible bond during the Hong Kong stock market bubble of 1997 and its subsequent crash. We find that the price behavior of the share and the convertible bond not only gave a clear signal of the market reversal, but also the minimum range of the stock price change. This example offers concrete evidence that the market becomes highly predictable at times and gives us a chance to understand the relationship of the underlying stock and its derivatives during market bubbles.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the relationship of aggregate sports participation and the overall crime in Hong Kong. Data of sports participation and the number of crimes from the year 2001 to 2015 were used in this study. Poisson regression models in level and in one-lagged period by maximum likelihood were used to explore the relationship between sports participation and crime in Hong Kong. The findings proved that higher sports participation of citizens would lower the overall crime in the city. This linkage also existed for young persons. The results of this study brought practical implications on the future planning of sports policy. The Hong Kong government played an important role in providing sports and recreation opportunities for the citizens. Recently, there was rising discontent towards the political power in the city, especially from the younger generation. It was hopeful that sports activities could be a medium to relief the grievance of young people and build up a stronger social cohesion. School sports might be a ready-made panacea for the current situation. Therefore, it suggested that more school sports opportunities should be provided to the younger generation.

The silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring) is an important pest of tomatoes in Florida and elsewhere. Associated with populations of the whitefly is an irregular ripening disorder of fruit characterized by inhibited or incomplete ripening of longitudinal sections of fruit and by an increase in the amount of interior white tissue. Experiments were conducted during the spring and fall tomato production seasons of 1995 and 1996 to elucidate the relationship of nymphal and pupal density with severity of the disorder. Insecticides or insecticide combinations were applied at predetermined densities of whitefly nymphs and pupae and the subsequent severity of the disorder was rated separately for external and internal symptoms on red ripe fruit harvested weekly. Expression of irregular ripening symptoms, especially external symptoms, were correlated positively to the density of whitefly nymphs and pupae (number·10-1 terminal leaflets on the seventh to eighth leaf from the top of a main or lateral stem) increased. Expression of external symptoms tended to be better correlated with whitefly density when symptom severity was rated 1 and 3 weeks after estimating whitefly density for the spring and fall seasons, respectively. Expression of internal symptoms tended to be more consistently correlated with whitefly density when symptom severity was rated 2 and 3 weeks after estimating whitefly density for the spring and fall seasons, respectively.
