Abstract Many designs fail because one or more checks are not done, or are done too late during the design process. A functional modelling system is presented, which provides systematic design checking at early design phases by means of constraint satisfaction. However, problems can occur if the design to be checked involves too many constraints. This paper presents some extended research, which establishes a knowledge hierarchy for managing the mathematical constraints, so that the computer can process large designs. A case study of fastening joint design using this hierarchy is discussed.

Current reverse engineering approach is an effective way for technology progress of developing countries. Based on analysis of existing reverse engineering technology, a new concept of Product Reverse Engineering (PRE) is proposed and its theoretical framework is discussed first in this paper in order to extend its application from components to the overall product structure and design process. Then a brief introduction is made to the technical system architecture and key techniques for PRE, which include the rapid solid modeling, integrating with existing CAD systems through STEP file, assembly modeling for conceptual structure, and reverse design process reconstruction. Finally, a prototype system PRE-DARFAD is developed with initial verification by a fixture design example.

The idea of Automatic Reverse Engineering was brought forward, which reduced the requirements of modeling experience, constructed surface more efficient and especially got a more accuracy model. Its main idea was converting triangular meshes which could be easily got automatically and could express arbitrarily complex models into quadrilateral meshes.The concept of reverse engineering, reverse design process and reverse analysis were introduced in this paper, which has been used in teaching practice of mechanical design specialized curriculum, the students will be guided to apply the automatic method of reverse design to the innovation design of product by motorcycle as an example.
