The Covid-19 pandemic is a global health crisis that has hit more than 100 countries including Taiwan. The agricultural sector is one of the sectors that has experienced the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the strategies and efforts that can solve it is food self-sufficiency through increasing production, diversifying local food, and developing sustainable agriculture. While in the process to achieve food self-sufficiency, there are also many challenges like intensive farming. Therefore, an effort is needed to improve the environment, the quality, and the safety of agriculture products through ecological balance. Permaculture is the system that uses natural principles between humans to live more productive with their environment. Through this concept, practitioners can be more productive with their environment. The study aims to analyze the implementation of permaculture design for food self-sufficiency on farm in eastern Taiwan. This study was used qualitative methods through interviews, participant observation, field notes, documentation to collect data. The result that practitioners integrate several designs based on principles and ethics of permaculture, including providing their food, fruit, vegetables, and livestock products. Practitioners also integrate elements into a multi-functional design, creative ideas to solve the problem that they face and make these efforts a challenge for them, such as bird kites and eagle poles for rice paddy pest problems. Thus, the concept of permaculture has been proven to increase productivity, harmony, and sustainability with the environment through the use of natural principles and human life.

This research was conducted to examine the impact of empowering and fostering innovation of peasants as an activity that summarizes the values to build a new paradigm in agricultural development. The role of the agricultural sector is very strategic, not only in order to achieve food self-sufficiency but also in order to expand non-oil and gas foreign exchange sources. The purpose of this study is to see the impact of the strategy and pattern of relations between the Aceh Community Empowerment Institution (LPMA) in implementing the empowerment program and fostering farmer innovation in Nisam District, North Aceh Regency. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with data collection techniques through interviews, observation and documentation. The phenomenon of poverty for the people in Nisam District, North Aceh generally comes from the agricultural sector due to the lack of support for knowledge and business capital. This empowerment activity is carried out by the Aceh Community Empowerment Institute (LPMA), a non-governmental organization. Research shows that the optimization of empowerment and innovation carried out by LPMA has contributed to increasing community empowerment and also contributed to business partnerships for poor farmers to increase community empowerment.

COVID-19, which occurred in Wuhan, China at the end of December 2019 and have affected the whole world, appears to have drastic effects on human health and economic stability. Economic activities related to global trade decreased with the spread of the epidemic and caused crisis both economically and financially. This virus, which is also a health crisis, has affected human life greatly due to uncertainty in the protection and treatment processes. Increasing numbers of cases and deaths negatively affect the economic progress globally and show that countries with intense epidemic are vulnerable. Not knowing how long the pandemic will last and how long economic activities will be restricted requires an economic precaution. If the pandemic is brought under control quickly, the return to normal economic life will happen quickly and thus all economic sectors, especially service sectors, will recover in a short time. If the process of controlling the pandemic is long, the destruction on economic growth and employment will be at higher levels. With the vaccine found, it is predicted that the normalization process will accelerate and the economy may recover. Increased studies examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on financial markets and commodity markets will make it easier for both economists and financial actors in the future.  In this study, the relationship between the daily number of cases of COVID-19 and brent oil, gold, EUR / USD and wheat prices were examined. After the natural logarithm of our variables was applied, it was determined whether they were static or not. ARDL test, Impact-Response Analysis and Variance Decomposition were performed according to the determined lag lengths. According to the results, ARDL test was performed because our data was not stationary according to the ADF test and cointegration was not found among the data. As a result of impact response analysis, shocks lose their effect in a short time.

With the global health crisis related to the new coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), the thorny issue of food security has arisen with force, especially with shortages of certain products on the markets, soaring prices, and sometimes even stock-outs. The covid-19 pandemic has led to a global economic crisis that has called into question the stability ensuring global food security. So, the present paper aims to analyze and discuss the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on agriculture, food supply, and food security in Morocco. Toward this end, data provided by the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO) have been analyzed, as well as studies conducted and published on the subject. The findings indicate that the Covid 19 pandemic has ensued several negative effects, which have directly and indirectly threatened Moroccan food security. It severely affected the agricultural sector which contributes significantly to GDP, due to suspension of agricultural activities, restriction of trade in agricultural commodities, and agricultural labor.  Also, It has primarily affected food imports due to the dependence on food importation and has impacted food supply chains, as the shutdown and closing of some stores severely disrupted the supply chain (transportation, storage, and distribution), resulting in food insufficiency in many far areas. Globally, food security in Morocco has demonstrated its resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic, due to the agricultural strategy put in place, the market was regularly supplied and the availability of products was ensured in all the cities of the Kingdom. Finally, based on the findings, we have suggested some recommendations that would help boost sustainable food security.

For most sub-Saharan African countries, participation in international trade almost always means exporting primary, often agricultural, products and importing machinery and other manufacturing goods. In appreciation of the detrimental economic effects of this situation on SSA countries, the EU has had one of the oldest and most generous preferential schemes for the benefit of these countries. This article argues, based on detailed analysis of EU food import law and its application to livestock products coming from East Africa, that these otherwise generous preferential schemes have been deprived of any effect by the stringent sanitary and phytosanitary requirements that are beyond the capacity of the producers in these countries to satisfy. It further argues that the current approach of the WTO system regarding SPS issues, which leaves countries free to impose standards of their choosing without any regard for the impact of such measures on the lives of producers in other countries, only accords a convenient blanket with which to wrap measures otherwise motivated by protectionist interests. It concludes that the only way the EU or any other country could support the SSA agricultural sector and the large number of poor people working in it is by helping governments and producers to enhance their production standards.

Rice production takes a leading role in the agricultural sector of Bangladesh contributing to 35% of the gross value added of total agricultural production (December 2011), employing 48% of the rural workforce. While the country achieved self-sufficiency in rice, continuous population growth requires Bangladesh to further increase the production of this staple cereal. However, considering the steady decline of the cropped area and available rural workforce, such increase could be reached by increasing the efficiency in rice production. This study aims to examine the resource use efficiency and its drivers in the performance of rice farms in the Northwest region of Bangladesh, which is considered as the food bowl of the country. The study applied a two-stage approach of Data Envelopment Analysis followed by Ordinary Least Squares to estimate the impact of contextual variables on rice production. The empirical research results show that 83% of rice farms among the sample of 184 farms are efficient being located on efficiency frontier, while the 2% farms are inefficient and could improve their efficiency. The remaining 15% of farms are at level that is close to the efficiency frontier. Such factors as the cost of irrigation, pest control, and crop harvesting and carrying are the main drivers of efficiency amongst the considered rice farms.

This study aims to identify and analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the agricultural sector, especially rice, oil palm, vegetables, fruits and livestock products, also the relation between economic growth and some commonly used competitiveness indicators. The approach used is RCA (Revealed Comparative Advantage), RSCA (Revealed Symetrics Comparative Advantage), Self Sufficiency Ratio (SSR), Import Dependency Ratio (IDR). The results of the study are as follows: The export performance of Indonesian agricultural products in general relatively weak. Almost all agricultural commodities have low competitiveness, except for plantation sub-sector products, especially rubber and palm oil which have high competitiveness, the remaining products such as horticulture, food crops, livestock products, and competitiveness of horticulture relatively low in the international commodity market. In this study, also found in general, the relation between the rate of economic growth and some magnitudes of international trade performance does not show a significant relationship for food crops, horticulture, plantations, and livestock products. Indonesia is approaching the stage of self-sufficiency, especially for food crops, but for other agricultural sector commodities, it is still very dependent on imports to meet domestic consumption needs.

Mental health and suicide are two substantial issues facing our society. They have far reaching impacts on the healthcare and public safety systems, the economy, and human life. Despite their impact and importance, the amount of research is disproportionate to the magnitude of the problem. The current study sought to determine decision requirements of those in mental health crisis and to translate them into a user-friendly mobile application. Individuals who had been in mental health crises and mental health professionals were interviewed. Results showed that both the availability of resources and the impact of anxiety and overwhelm on decision making are areas in which individuals in crisis can be better supported. Outcome of research included design of a prototype mobile application designed to support decision making during mental health crisis.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has emerged as a new public health crisis, threatening almost all aspects of human life. Originating in bats, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is transmitted to humans through unknown intermediate hosts, where it is primarily known to cause pneumonia-like complications in the respiratory system. Organ-to-organ transmission has not been ruled out, thereby raising the possibility of the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on multiple organ systems. The male reproductive system has been hypothesized to be a potential target of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which is supported by some preliminary evidence. This may pose a global threat to male fertility potential, as men are more prone to SARS-CoV-2 infection than women, especially those of reproductive age. Preliminary reports have also indicated the possibility of sexual transmission of SARS-CoV-2. It may cause severe complications in infected couples. This review focuses on the pathophysiology of potential SARS-CoV-2 infection in the reproductive organs of males along with their invasion mechanisms. The risks of COVID-19 on male fertility as well as the differences in vulnerability to SARS-CoV-2 infection compared with females have also been highlighted.
