Com base no livro Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, de Vilém Flusser, este artigo discute alguns dos conceitos principais ali tratados e, a partir deles, propõe uma reflexão acerca do ambiente político-midiático contemporâneo. Sob uma abordagem ensaístico-flusseriana, parto de uma breve contextualização da obra em questão e, ao longo do argumento, delineio paralelos com debates atuais. A interpretação aqui empreendida pauta-se nos conceitos de espelho deformante, conspiração esotérica e obscenidade. Defendo, por fim, que a metáfora vampyrotêuthica segue atuante ao devolver-nos uma imagem de nós mesmos na qual não nos reconhecemos.

Resumo Este texto explora o imaginário do mar e das criaturas marinhas no pensamento de Vilém Flusser, especialmente em seu singular livro Vampyroteuthis Infernalis. Nesse ensaio, o oceano constitui uma metáfora poética para pensar o universo das tecnologias digitais e dos fluxos técnicos da contemporaneidade. Almeja-se demonstrar que Vampyroteuthis Infernalis é não somente o trabalho mais original do autor, senão que dialoga, de modo quase profético e com profunda atualidade, com outros temas e pensadores contemporâneos no campo da teoria cultural. Segundo a leitura aqui sugerida, Vampyroteuthis Infernalis constituiria uma reflexão filosófica fundamental sobre o tema da identidade na relação com os aparatos tecnológicos e a cultura digital.

A representação da monstruosidade teve um caminho longo e tortuoso desde a aurora da Humanidade. O universo dos bestiários ampliados após as ficções filosóficas, fantásticas e policiais (de Franz Kafka a Partricia Highsmith) trabalharam variações (complexas e aparentemente infinitas) de fórmulas e interpolações, múltiplas possibilidades narrativas dentro de quadro híbrido (entre a descrição e o conceito, mimeticamente evocado pela narração). Villém Flusser e Louis Bec, em pleno século XX, recuperam algo da estrutura de composição do bestiário medieval e ficção fantástica/especulativa no Vampyroteuthis infernalis.

AbstractVampyroteuthis infernalis Chun, 1903, is a widely distributed deepwater cephalopod with unique morphology and phylogenetic position. We assessed its habitat and trophic ecology on a global scale via stable isotope analyses of a unique collection of beaks from 104 specimens from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. Cephalopods typically are active predators occupying a high trophic level (TL) and exhibit an ontogenetic increase in δ15N and TL. Our results, presenting the first global comparison for a deep-sea invertebrate, demonstrate that V. infernalis has an ontogenetic decrease in δ15N and TL, coupled with niche broadening. Juveniles are mobile zooplanktivores, while larger Vampyroteuthis are slow-swimming opportunistic consumers and ingest particulate organic matter. Vampyroteuthis infernalis occupies the same TL (3.0–4.3) over its global range and has a unique niche in deep-sea ecosystems. These traits have enabled the success and abundance of this relict species inhabiting the largest ecological realm on the planet.

This review explores the existing literature on the Vampire Squid from Hell, Vampyroteuthis infernalis (Phylum Mollusca, Class Cephalopoda, Order Vampyromorpha). They are largely unstudied deep water cephalopods found in the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) throughout the world’s temperate and tropical oceans. Their unique morphology and genetic ambiguity has contributed to scientific debate regarding their phylogenetic relationships, to which there is still no definitive answer. Vampyroteuthis are so well adapted to life in the OMZ that foraging, locomotion and antipredator behaviours are entirely unique among cephalopods and perfectly well-adapted to the oxygen-starved environment. Despite a lack of direct research, inferences are made to determine the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the vampire squid.

Stomach contents of 893 blue shark (Prionace glauca) caught off Ensenada, Todos Santos Bay, Baja California, from 1995 to 1997 were analysed. 614 had identifiable food remains. A large variety of pelagic cephalopods occurred in 55.5% of all stomachs and accounted for 46.2% of all prey and 84% by estimated weight of stomach contents. The most abundant (17%) and frequent (32%) was Histioteuthis heteropsis and the most important by estimated weight (22%) was ‘Gonatus californiensis’. Argonauta spp. and Vampyroteuthis infernalis were also abundant prey. A pair of beaks of giant squid Architeuthis sp. constitutes the first record for Mexican waters. Feeding habits and the probability of scavenging on mesopelagic cephalopods is discussed. The single most abundant prey was the pelagic, red crab Pleuroncodes planipes (41.7%). Other prey included teleost fish, amniotes and floating items. Diet varied greatly between months with no clear seasonal pattern. Tiny diet differences due to shark size or sex were inconclusive. A thorough review of studies on blue sharks stomach contents analysis is given. Blue shark feed on a large variety of passive pelagic prey, mainly mesopelagic cephalopods, that could be preyed upon as well as scavenged. Depletion of this predator due to overfishing may be leading to unknown cascading top-down effects in the mesopelagic realm.

Neste artigo procuraremos compreender o recurso ficcional em Flus­ser como método de investigação. A ficção em Flusser é utilizada não apenas como um laboratório imaginário de experimentações que por vezes auxiliam na paralaxe dos fenômenos, mas igualmente enquanto importante recurso retórico que, através da ficção hiperbólica “dá a ver” as transformações, por vezes imper­ceptíveis, que começam a irromper no horizonte das sociedades pós-industriais. Nos debruçaremos ainda sobre a fábula do Vampyroteuthis Infernalis, o que possibilitará não apenas analisar os meandros da produção filosófico-ficcional de Flusser, mas também introduzir temas referentes às transformações ocasionadas pela forma de existência pós-histórica.

AbstractA marked 120 My gap in the fossil record of vampire squids separates the only extant species (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) from its Early Cretaceous, morphologically-similar ancestors. While the extant species possesses unique physiological adaptations to bathyal environments with low oxygen concentrations, Mesozoic vampyromorphs inhabited epicontinental shelves. However, the timing of their retreat towards bathyal and oxygen-depleted habitats is poorly documented. Here, we document a first record of a post-Mesozoic vampire squid from the Oligocene of the Central Paratethys represented by a vampyromorph gladius. We assignNecroteuthis hungaricato the family Vampyroteuthidae that links Mesozoic loligosepiids with RecentVampyroteuthis. Micropalaeontological, palaeoecological, and geochemical analyses demonstrate thatNecroteuthis hungaricainhabited bathyal environments with bottom-water anoxia and high primary productivity in salinity-stratified Central Paratethys basins. Vampire squids were thus adapted to bathyal, oxygen-depleted habitats at least since the Oligocene. We suggest that the Cretaceous and the early Cenozoic OMZs triggered their deep-sea specialization.
