Events and festivals are a global phenomenon in a competitive industry that has experienced rapid growth. Festivals attract tourists and create festival tourism. San Enrique, Iloilo celebrates its Kalamay Festival every month of July. Kalamay Festival, as the primary subject of this research study, is a celebration of the town's sugarcane farming and the production of raw sugar as well as the impact of the sugar industry on the town for almost 40 years. With its current situation, it does not have a high level of market-oriented operation, public awareness, and public participation. The management of Kalamay Festival requires a well-written plan to greater guarantee sustainability in continuing such an event. The study aimed to develop a festival development plan to provide a direction in assessing the status of Kalamay Festival in terms of economic, social, environmental, and cultural aspects, including the opportunities and challenges of Kalamay Festival in terms of accessibility, accommodation, attraction, amenities, and awareness. The findings of the study served as a basis for the formulation of a three-year festival development plan that will help guide in identifying areas for development, and formulating programs to aid the needs of the Local Tourism Office of San Enrique, Iloilo that will facilitate the continuous improvement of the Kalamay Festival, to be well-recognized in the local and international tourism market.

This article empirically evaluates the impact of CSR behaviour on the financial indicators of 286 companies from Brazil, Russia, India, and China over six years from 2013 to 2018. Company information and CSR ratings were retrieved from the Bloomberg and RobetaSAM databases, and hypotheses were proposed based on a literature review. We constructedvarious analytical models that differ in dependent variables to better evaluate of distinct CSR metrics through different regression methods. Analyzed factors include: (1) the presence of women on the board; (2) the presence of a company in CSR ratings, and (3) various cultural aspects of the society where companies operate. Our results support the conclusions of related research in this field of study. Among other consequences, our analysis indicates that CSR significantly influences financial performance, although this is also contingent on external factors. A company’s presence in the CSR rating scale has a more substantial impact on profitability and market capitalization indicatorsthan the actual score itself. CSR information disclosure has some effect on ROA and ROE, and the presence of women in the board of Directors showed a slight positive effect on market capitalization. Further, a high level of ‘power distance’ (i.e. the ostensible alienation of the general citizenry from political authority sources) in the society where company operatesharms the relationship between the rating score and financial performance.

This manuscript is one of two written to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the American College of Toxicology (ACT). This history of ACT describes its evolution from an entrepreneurial, risk taking model to a conservative business model, fully accepted in the scientific community. ACT started with a small group of scientists who were dissatisfied with the relatively narrow approach to full membership then taken by the Society of Toxicology (SOT). They were excited by new research and collaborative opportunities resulting from an enhanced public awareness of the impact of chemicals on the environment and emerging new methodologies to evaluate human risks of exposure to be chemicals and pharmaceuticals. These toxicologists, many of whom were from industry and government, rather than academia, were tired of being considered socond class citizens and envisioned more open and cross-disciplined approaches. They favored balanced input by academia, industry and government in the overall toxicologic evaluation and risk assessment process. The history of the founding and early development of ACT, as well as the College’s growth and eventual acceptance into the scientific community, including its impact on the status quo during the Society’s first 25 years, are told by its successive presidents.

Cultural knowledge is an integral part of the language teaching process in EFL situations. The difficulties facing students in this area have negatively affected their ability to communicate successfully and translate accurately. Nonetheless, the debate over the significance of involving cultural aspects in the language classroom has continued in the local Saudi context. The language weaknesses resulting from the lack of sufficient cultural perspective can also be observed and confirmed in this region. Students’ understanding of culture-specific words and concepts is the area that is affected the most when a disconnection occurs between language teaching and cultural knowledge. Thus, in this paper, the researcher examines the impact of this disconnection by outlining the extent to which cultural knowledge is incorporated into EFL language courses. This study also focuses on documenting the language use examples that illustrate the difficulties faced by students in this regard, which is an aspect that is missing from several previous studies in the local context. The data examined in this study were collected through open-ended questionnaires and organizing focus group discussions. The analysis of the results reveals that the cultural component of language teaching is not satisfactory for the English major students surveyed in this study. The research participants also described the kind of cultural knowledge missing from their curriculum and the specific areas affected by that. The study concludes with several suggested solutions that focus on the resources available to Saudi students (and other students in the same circumstances) and on utilizing the most recent developments in online education in the past two years.

This paper examines the impact of Brexit on financial services regulation in relation to three areas linked to executive remuneration. They are: the bonus cap; the clawback of pay; and the level of disclosure required by shareholders with regard to details of directors’ remuneration. It will be argued that legally Brexit will have little impact on any of the three areas. UK legislation has already incorporated a great deal of EU legislation. The status quo of retaining such legal restrictions seems sensible in light of public sentiment towards unfairness in executive compensation and uncertainty towards the Brexit negotiations. Nevertheless, London faces stiff competition from other major international financial centres in a post-Brexit era. The loss of single passporting rights is also encouraging major banks to invest in other European financial centres. Brexit creates opportunities too. With the integration of digital technology, it is possible to create convenient platforms where investors can access reports on executive remuneration.

The performance of international courts has traditionally been judged against criteria of compliance and effectiveness. Whilst these are clearly desirable objectives for litigants before Africa’s international courts, this book shows that we must look beyond these criteria to fully appreciate the impact of African international courts. This book definitively shows how litigants in these courts use their participation in international litigation to achieve other objectives: to amplify political disputes with their governments, to build their movement, to educate the public about their cause, and to challenge the status quo. Chapters in this collection show these courts acting as coordination points for opposition political parties to name and shame dominant parties for violation of their organizational rights. Others demonstrate how Africa’s international courts serve as transitional justice mechanisms in which truth telling about ongoing conflict and authoritarian governance receives significant attention. This attention serves as a platform to galvanize resistance against continued authoritarian rule, especially from outside the conflict countries. Ultimately, the book shows that these courts must be judged against new and broader criteria, and understood as increasingly important venues for waging political, social, environmental, and legal struggles.

Nowadays, English is significantly popular among Algerian generation but not to such an extent to be used in social context. Its use is, however, limited to classroom environment except for those students who are fond of this foreign language and master it with a high level of fluency. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the status of English as second foreign language in Algeria, and how it has been injected within the educational system by taking into consideration social and cultural aspects. Education is a process and like other processes, it is exposed to several factors, some of which are aid and some others are obstructive. The type of school can be one of these factors that may affect teachers and students: Single-sex or coeducational schools. Algeria is a country that still offers different types of schools that have great impact on pedagogy and on learners’ performance in the EFL context due to social and cultural impacts.

Amphibians are among the most threatened groups of animals on earth. In part due to their highly permeable skin, amphibians are highly sensitive to environmental changes and pollution and provide an early-warning system of deteriorating environmental conditions. The more we learn about the impact of environmental changes on amphibians, the better we as humans will be able to arrest their demise, and our own. Status of Conservation and Decline of Amphibians brings together the current knowledge on the status of the unique frogs of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. Although geographically proximate, each region presents unique challenges and opportunities in amphibian research and conservation. This book contributes to an understanding of the current conservation status of the amphibians of each region, aims to stimulate research into halting amphibian declines, and provides a better foundation for making conservation decisions. It is an invaluable reference for environmental and governmental agencies, researchers, policy-makers involved with biodiversity conservation, and the interested public.

AbstractPorts are characterized by several complex operations. Accordingly, the analysis of noise results is complicated due to the presence in the same area of diverse sound from ships, trade and also from industrial and shipyards activities aswell as auxiliary services producing negative effects on natural ecosystem and the urban population. The ENPI CBC MED project Managing the Environmental Sustainability of Ports for a durable development (MESP) addressed the pollution reduction from port activities through the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach in air, noise andwater sectors, encompassing technological, regulatory and administrative solutions to ensure natural and urban sustainability and high level of life quality in surrounding territories. To prevent a heterogeneous development, the “status quo” of ports in Northern and Southern Shores of the Mediterranean Sea was analyzed and a guideline on methodologies, good practices and measurement assessment, adaptable and transferable in different port contexts was elaborated. To assess the procedures, validation tests have been carried out to different real cases. In noise sector pilot projects in the ports of Patras, Greece, and Tripoli, Lebanon, have been implemented. Due to the dissimilar scenarios, in terms of orography, facilities and activities, different noise mitigation actions and interventions were consequently accomplished.
