Taking on Looting: Pursuing Sustainable Site Protection Policies in Southern Ontario

Centuries of looting has repeatedly unearthed the archaeological remains of First Nations middens, villages, and cemeteries. This paper presents a case for new measures to curtail these illicit practices in Ontario. Over the last decade, many archaeologists have espoused a program of sustainable archaeology. I suggest protections of in situ contexts against looting will further the objectives of sustainable archaeology and contribute to this broader trajectory of practice in the province. Using the history of looting and archaeological conditions at Neutral Iroquoian (Attawandaron) sites, along with information from modern collectors, the paper reveals the persistent threat of looting and the necessity for action. I suggest the province, municipalities, and archaeological stakeholders deploy policies aimed at preserving these resources into the future. I advocate for a stewardship of personal and collective responsibility among property owners and hobbyists through educational initiatives, legal easement agreements, and existing legislative mandates to serve as a pragmatic step towards the long-term sustainable protection of these sites.

This chapter focuses on the history of democratization since the late eighteenth century. It introduces the concepts of ‘waves’ (trends) and ‘conjunctures’ (briefer turmoils) and delineates the major developments in this respect. In this way, the major long-term and short-term factors leading to the emergence and breakdowns of democracies are also highlighted. The first long wave occurred during the period 1776–1914, followed by the first positive conjuncture in 1918–19, the second long wave (with some intermittent turbulences) in 1945–88, and the latest conjuncture in 1989–90. The chapter identifies the main ingredients to democratization throughout history, namely: republicanism, representation, and political equality. It concludes by considering some of the current perspectives and dangers for the future of democracy.

Archaeological accounts of the spread of agriculture tend to favor either (im)migration/demic diffusion or in situ development/stimulus diffusion. Having moved away from the early twentieth-century's community-wide migration model for Iroquoian origins in the Lower Great Lakes region and southern Ontario in particular, orthodox archaeological belief over the past half-century had come to place Northern Iroquoian speakers in the area since at least 2,000 years ago and likely much earlier. In what appear to be modified versions of the older migrationist arguments, contemporary thought within archaeology once more seems to allow that wholesale relocations were responsible for bringing farming into the region. It has been suggested, for example, that Northern Iroquoian speakers entered southern Ontario as recently as the early or middle centuries of the first millennium A.D. In this paper, I recount the routes this debate has taken and show that the appearance of maize (Zea mays) agriculture, alongside a few other materials, has come to be bound up with documenting the arrival of Northern Iroquoian-speaking communities. I conclude by reiterating the cautions advised by a number of researchers for how we read past ethnicity from archaeological materials and the role this plays in contemporary political discourse between First Nations and others.

It seems an appropriate time for outsiders as well to look back over the history of the past 60 years, in the hope of grasping long-term tendencies which may continue to influence events in the future.

In late nineteenth century and especially in the interwar years, “free traders” took advantage of better transport systems to expand trade with Dene people in the Athabasca and Mackenzie Districts. Well versed in fur grading and supported by credit in the expanding industrializing fur industry in the south, “itinerant” peddlers worked independently and often controversially alongside larger capitalized fur companies such as the Hudson’s Bay Company. A large number of these newcomers were Jews. This article suggests that Jews and, to a lesser extent, Lebanese and other Arabic traders became critical in the modernization of the Canadian North. They helped create an itinerant trader-Dene “contact zone” where the mixed meaning of credit, cash, and goods transactions provided northern Aboriginal trappers the means to negotiate modernism on their own terms in the interwar years. However, by the late 1920s, the state, encouraged by larger capitalized companies, implemented policies to restrict and finally close down this contact zone. The history of itinerant trading, then, raises questions about the long-term history of capitalism and co-related economic neo-colonialism in the Canadian north and their impact on First Nations.

We report a 26-year-old Thai man who presented with hypoparathyroidism in adulthood. He had no history of cardiac disease and recurrent infection. His subtle dysmorphic facial features and mild intellectual impairment were suspected for chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. The diagnosis was confirmed by fluorescence in situ hybridization, which found microdeletion in 22q11.2 region. The characteristic facial appearance can lead to clinical suspicion of this syndrome. The case report emphasizes that this syndrome is not uncommon and presents as a remarkable variability in the severity and extent of expression. Accurate diagnosis is important for genetic counseling and long-term health supervision by multidisciplinary team.

Clipperton Atoll is one of the most isolated tropical island in the world and the only atoll of the eastern Pacific. Its outer slopes also make the largest coral reef of this region. Clipperton is a remarkable site for the geochemistry of its closed eutrophic stratified lagoon, the influence of both tropical eastern Pacific and Oceania gene pool on coral reef communities, the low diversity of the marine and land fauna, and for the equilibrium of its land ecosystem. The three components of the Clipperton Atoll seascape (coral reef-lagoon-land) all appear to have remarkable properties and history. All components experienced important changes in the last century due to anthropogenic (importation of exogenous species) or natural perturbations (closing of passes, coral bleaching). Here, we review the history of these three systems (land-lagoon-coral reef) and provide new insights of the current status of the atoll based on recent surveys and high resolution IKONOS satellite imagery. Most dramatic changes occurring in the last decades include explosion in crab Gecarcinus planatus population, almost-complete desertification of the island and increase in Masked Boobies Sula dactylatra population, making Clipperton Atoll one of the most important sites for this specie in the world. This review intends to provide a sound basis to discuss the future of Clipperton balanced between conservation and development priorities, and to raise awareness on the future of a delicate ecosystem.

Abstract. Repositories for high-level radioactive waste in geological formations require knowledge on thermal, mechanical and fluid transport properties of the whole repository system, including the engineered barriers and backfill materials. For about 30 years, crushed salt has been considered the most suitable geotechnical barrier material to backfill cavities and encapsulate radioactive waste in rock salt repository sites (e.g., Czaikowski et al., 2020). Over time, when the surrounding cavity walls converge by the creep of salt, it can become strongly compacted and safely encapsulates radioactive waste from any fluid flow. Hence, crushed salt has been characterized in detail for its physical material properties and its response to environmental controls (stress, temperature and moisture). This characterisation provides a basis for long-term numerical simulations (e.g., Liu et al., 2018), which verify so-called safety cases in radioactive waste disposal. Displacement-controlled oedometric compaction tests mimic the long-term in situ behaviour of crushed salt. The tests show that it can be compacted to a state comprising physical rock properties similar to natural rock salt. In general, compaction is easier with an increase in humidity and temperature (e.g., Stührenberg, 2007; Kröhn, et al., 2017). Triaxial test series address the compactions' response to differing confining pressures and help to identify generalized constitutive equations for crushed salt. Both BGR procedures, the oedometric and the triaxial compaction, are verified by the German accreditation body (DAkkS). Figure 1 illustrates the history of oedometric tests at the BGR laboratory since 1993, which examined crushed salt from various origins and differing temperature conditions. Most tests focused on material from the Asse mine, revealing the compactions' response to the materials' humidity and to brine flow. Moreover, systematic test series with synthetic grain size distributions and bentonite additives provided a basis for barrier material design. More recent tests on bedded salt formations (e.g., Teutschenthal and Sondershausen mines) allow the differentiation from characteristics from domal salt deposits (e.g. Gorleben). The current research continues the history of oedometric and triaxial tests, but has a new focus on late compaction stages with marginal remaining porosities (<5 %). The approach of systematic material characterization under best-controlled conditions essentially benefits from the international research collaboration in the KOMPASS project (Czaikowski et al., 2020). The aim of its current phase two is to synthetically generate, identify and quantify dominant grain-scale deformation processes in response to changes in environmental controls. Subsequently, these laboratory results will be embedded in numerical models on the long-term in situ rheology of crushed salt.

In this article I focus on the emotional, sensory and aesthetic affordances of urban archaeological remains conserved in situ and explore what these ruins ‘do’ in the context of the layered urban fabric of the city. I am concerned with a particular category of archaeological remains: those that illustrate the colonial history of settler nations, exploring examples in Sydney and Montreal. Using Sara Ahmed’s concept of ‘affective economies’ – where emotions work to stick things together and align individuals with communities – I tease out some of the distinctive aspects of this particular form of social/emotional/material entanglement, that appears to create stable objects of memory and identity from a much more contingent and complex matrix of politics, social structures, and the more-than-human materiality of the city. I argue that an understanding of the affective qualities of ruins and archaeological traces, and of how people feel heritage and the past through aesthetic and sensuous experiences of materiality, authenticity, locality and identity, bring us closer to understanding how heritage works.

July 1, 1954, marks a milestone in the history of the American Academy of Pediatrics. For 22 years Doctor Hugh McCulloch has served the Academy, first as co-editor of the Journal of Pediatrics and since the establishment in 1948 of our own publication, Pediatrics, as Editor-in-Chief. Throughout his long term of office he has been an outstanding editor and in addition has found time to serve the Academy in many other ways. He was nominated by the Academy for membership on the American Board of Pediatrics and served as Chairman of the Committee on Rheumatic Fever, to mention only a few of his many activities. Few men have given as much of themselves to pediatrics and American medicine. Since he first served as a member of the Committee on Publication in 1931, Doctor McCulloch has been an inspiration to everyone who has had an opportunity to work with him. His superior qualities of executive ability and imagination have been important factors in establishing Pediatrics as an outstanding publication. Doctor McCulloch has found it necessary to ask to be relieved as Editor-in-Chief because of increasing demands on his time. It was with sincere regret and profound appreciation of Doctor McCulloch's contributions to the American Academy of Pediatrics that the Executive Board acceded to his request. It is impossible to express the magnitude of the debt that the Academy owes Doctor McCulloch for his many years of service. With the selection of Doctor Charles D. May as Editor-in-Chief, the Executive Board presents to its members a fellow member of the Academy who has a broad viewpoint of the responsibilities of the position. He is typical of the new leadership which steadily develops within the Academy and upon which we depend for even greater advances in the future.
