Een boek met op de omslag een foto van twee jonge Indonesische meisjes, uitdagend gekleed, de borsten pront naar voren, die vanuit de ooghoeken schuw kijken naar de fotograaf. Op de achtergrond vier mannen die toekijken. En dat alles herkenbaar op de Dam te Amsterdam. Wat is de relatie tussen die foto en naturalistisch onderzoek? Dat was een van de onderwerpen die voorbijkwamen bij de presentatie van het boek Doing qualitative research: The craft of naturalistic inquiry, geschreven door Joost Beuving en Geert de Vries.De bijeenkomst was georganiseerd door Uitgeverij Amsterdam University Press in het academisch-cultureel centrum van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en de kleine ruimte zat helemaal vol. Er waren zelfs meer belangstellenden dan zitplaatsen. Vanwaar die belangstelling? Was dat voor het onderwerp over ‘onderzoek voor de publieke zaak’, voor ‘naturalistisch onderzoek’ of voor de twee sprekers?Joost Beuving noemde bij de opening het doel van hun boek: de transparantie van de samenleving voor haar leden vergroten. Juist naturalistisch onderzoek kan daaraan bijdragen. Halleh Ghorashi, hoogleraar Diversiteit en Integratie aan de Vrije Universiteit, en Fred Wester, emeritus hoogleraar Communicatiewetenschap aan de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en voorzitter van KWALON, waren uitgenodigd om daar hun licht op te laten schijnen.

Roy Gigengack (2017a en b) heeft veel waardering voor het boek Doing Qualitative Research: The Craft of Naturalistic Inquiry van Joost Beuving en Geert de Vries (2015). Maar hij heeft ook kritiek. Een van die kritieken is dat de auteurs ten onrechte alle vormen van kwalitatief onderzoek naturalistisch noemen. Deze kritiek is terecht. In het boek van Beuving & De Vries staat: ‘Naturalistic research is qualitative research by ordinary means into everyday situations, aiming to disturb these situations as little as possible. (…) As a craft, naturalistic inquiry may be considered the artisanal core of qualitative research and hence of ethnography and all the other varieties of qualitative research’ (p. 19). Gewone middelen zijn onder meer: kijken, praten, luisteren, samen eten, uitgaan en ook verzamelen van documenten, maar dan alleen bestaande documenten (extant of existing documents), denk ik. Zo weinig mogelijk verstoren houdt immers in dat de onderzoeker geen documenten laat maken speciaal voor het onderzoek; dus geen uitgelokte documenten (elicited of solicited documents). In naturalistisch onderzoek past geen manipulatie. Een naturalistisch onderzoek is ‘an unobtrusive strategy’ (p. 16).

Als gevolg van de groeiende aandacht voor discoursanalyse is er onmiskenbaar behoefte aan een goede introductie. Uitgevers lijken daar een fijne neus voor te hebben. Dat blijkt bijvoorbeeld uit het initiatief van Sage om vrijwel tegelijkertijd met maar liefst twee introducties op de markt te komen. De eerste introductie is een boekje in de reeks 'Qualitative Research Methods Series': de bekende blauwe reeks met inleidingen in diverse methoden van kwalitatief onderzoek. Het boekje is geschreven door Nelson Phillips en Cynthia Hardy. Beide auteurs hebben diverse studies verricht op het terrein van organisatieprocessen. De tweede introductie is geschreven door Louise Phillips en Marianne Jørgensen, die een achtergrond hebben in de communicatiewetenschappen. Hoewel beide boeken hetzelfde doel beogen (een inleiding bieden in het complexe veld van discoursanalyse), zijn ze onvergelijkbaar zowel wat betreft opzet als behandeling van het veld van discoursanalyse. Om die reden zal ik ze ook afzonderlijk bespreken.

On validation of practice-based qualitative research Erica Baarends & Frits Simon An analysis of the most used literature on (practice-based) qualitative research in the Netherlands shows that the described criteria for validity are mainly derived from a quantitative perspective. As a consequence, the voice of the researcher dominates in the research instead of the voice of the research respondents. It is argued that in the age of Facebook and considering the current legitimization crisis of science, practice-based qualitative researchers need validation criteria that respect the polyvocality of the respondents.

Qualitative research methods based on literature review or expert judgement have been used to find core issues, analyze emerging trends and discover promising areas for the future. Deriving results from large amounts of information under this approach is both costly and time consuming. Besides, there is a risk that the results may be influenced by the subjective opinion of experts. In order to make up for such weaknesses, the analysis paradigm for choosing future emerging trend is undergoing a shift toward mplementing qualitative research methods along with quantitative research methods like text mining in a mutually complementary manner. The hange used to implement recent studies is being witnessed in various areas such as the steel industry, the information and communications technology industry, the construction industry in architectural engineering and so on. This study focused on retrieving aviation-related core issues and the promising areas for the future from research papers pertaining to overall aviation areas through text mining method, which is one of the big data analysis techniques. This study has limitations in that its analysis for retrieving the aviation-related core issues and promising fields was restricted to research papers containing the keyword "aviation." However, it has significance in that it prepared a quantitative analysis model for continuously monitoring the derived core issues and emerging trends regarding the promising areas for the future in the aviation industry through the application of a big data-based descriptive approach.

Naturalism and qualitative research Roy Gigengack In his discussion of Doing Qualitative Research: The Craft of Naturalistic Inquiry (Beuving & De Vries, 2015, Amsterdam: AUP), Gigengack praises its accessibility and the valuable chapters on interviewing, documents, portrayals, and things, especially for method courses. But he dislikes the authors’ conception of naturalism and the definition of qualitative research as a craft. In their reaction, Beuving and De Vries stress that in their conception naturalism is to be seen as a form of realism, but Gigengack replies with an analysis of the book’s cover picture to show the limitations of this view. In a comment on these discussions, Smaling describes Beuving & De Vries’ position as one of four conceptions of naturalism in qualitative research.
